13/16 in. Pre-Gap Size: . 032 in.
Yamaha engines come from the factory with NGK brand spark plugs, and PartsVu carries a wide assortment of these OEM plugs. In most applications, the spark plugs come pre-gapped, but it is advisable to re-check gap to make sure that no plugs were damaged during manufacturing or shipment.
As a rule, the gap is between 0.6 and 0.8 mm, depending on the motorcycle model. Gaps of up to 1.1 mm are less common.
Spark plug gaps for car engines are typically 0.6 to 1.8 mm (0.024 to 0.071 in). Modern engines (using solid-state ignition systems and electronic fuel injection) typically use larger gaps than older engines that use breaker point distributors and carburetors.
Engine Hesitation

An engine that hesitates, or stumbles, upon acceleration is often the result of incorrectly gapped spark plugs. If spark plugs are gapped too wide, the ignition spark loses some of its strength as it crosses the spark plug gaps.

Spark Plugs

Although according to the manual you only need to inspect the plugs periodically (and it doesn`t describe a replacement schedule), it`s recommended that you replace them at least every second year.

With a spark plug gap of . 6mm (~. 024″), this spark plug is designed specifically for 49cc 4-cylinder bicycle engines. Without a spark the fuel in your motor won`t create the explosion needed to move its piston up and down in order for the engine to run properly.
One of the key factors that makes a spark plug work well, or not, is the size of the gap between the electrodes. If the gap is too small, the spark will likely be too weak and cause the engine to run poorly or with poor efficiency.
Gapping fine-wire spark plugs

While most NGK spark plugs are pre-gapped, there are occasions when the gap requires adjustment. Care must be taken to avoid bending or breaking off the fine-wire electrodes. NGK recommends a round wire-style or pin gauge gap tool to measure the gap.

The larger the gap, the more voltage is needed to jump the gap. Most experienced tuners know that increasing the gap size increases the spark area exposed to the air-fuel mixture, which maximizes burn efficiency.
A smaller gap will yield a short, intense spark and will usually make the engine real responsive. A wide gap creates a longer spark arc but without sufficient “juice” from your ignition system, (including amps), it can be weak and yellow in color.
The optimum gap between 0.7 to 0.9 mm. At 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, and 1mm made more fuel consumption. Using platinum spark plug and RON 90 fuel can reduce fuel consumption to 5% on average.
Changing the spark plug gap won`t affect the ignition timing, but it will have some affects on the ability of the spark plug to ignite the fuel.
As the spark plugs wear, the spark plug gaps widen, also weakening MPG. This is because the wider the spark plug gap, the more voltage is required to arch between the electrodes. The smoother the combustion process, the lower the demand for engine power and the lower the demand for fuel.
However, if the spark plug gap is too large, the spark is unlikely to consistently “jump” across the long distance between electrodes, thus leading to a rough-running engine or one that doesn`t run at all.
Q: What Happens If You Don`t Gap Spark Plugs? A: Ungapped spark plugs will cause misfires as the gap between the electrodes could be too small or too wide. The air/fuel mixture then may not ignite or ignite on the wrong stroke, which can cause misfires.

Turned poulan pro 42 inch 18.5 HP Briggs and Stratton mower off after 1hr of use to move a board I was about to mow over. Tried to restart it but it just backfires. Removed spark plug and it looked fouled. Cleaned it up but when looking at spark it is orange in color. Bought new spark plug and now get white spark. Installed new spark plug and it still backfires. Plug is wet with gas. Any suggestions?
ANSWER : Check the valve clearances and especially the inlet valve to make sure that it is not riding (staying slightly open) B&S are notorious for valve problems as most of their motors do not have a valve adjustment on them, the valves stems have to be filed/ground down to get a clearance. Somewhere between 0.010 to 0.015″ is near enough for the inlets and about 0.005″ more for the exhaust. It is not critical.

Spark plug wire boot grounding out on coil, 96 outback 2.5 automatic, just put new spark plug wires, new spark plugs, and new coil on. ran great for two weeks, now spark is jumping out of boot at coil on one wire, put old coil back on and still does it in the same spot. replaced wires again, and still does it in the same spot. seems to do it only under a load. Is my new spark plug on that cylinder bad? Does the coil need some insulation under it? It is the coil that sits right on top of the motor. Any ideas? thanks.
ANSWER : Sparks are high voltage, and will always follow the path of least resistance. If you can visibly see a spark (whether in a lighted area, or in the dark), that means either that a plug wire (or coil wire) is open (non conductive), or your have a carbon track on the surface where the spark can be seen, but most likely you have BOTH problems!

If you have an ohmmeter, check the resistance of each wire involved, particularly spark plug wires … which means you must be able to connect to both ends of each wire at the same, and hopefully, FLEX those wires, to be sure they don’t have a break inside that is intermittent (comes and goes)!

I just purchased this Yamaha boat w/Twin MR-1 140hp motors, less than 100hrs (60 prox)and the starboard motor only reached 8000rpm on a 10000 redline spec (the port motor reaches 10000rpm. I have replaced the spark plugs immediatly and now the motor reaches 9500rpm. When the plugs were replaced the plug wire top of the plugs had a black powder residue (like graphite)and #1 & 4 plug electrode end were black minimal soot and #2 & #3 had a white color residue on the ceramic.

Any suggestions to attain the full 10000rpm?

A Yamaha dealer is 100 miles, so I would like to fix myself if possible. Thanks

ANSWER : I never rec’d an answer…..I WANT A REFUND!

I have a 2004 60 hp yamaha 2 stroke outboard engine that doesn’t start or run well. Once warm and in the water it will idle in nuetral and also in gear. It accelerates in neutral but will die or lack power if I increase throttle while in gear. Engine will somtimes get to top speed but often while running at top speed engine will start to slow rapidly. Engine has full range of operationout when out of the water where there is no load on engine but is still difficult to cold start. Before these recent problems the engine sat up for several months and I had to change the impeller and spark plugs. Spark plugs fire, cylinders have proper pressure of 100, 100, and 110. I cleaned some fuel lines and filters and got new gas.
ANSWER : Every sympton you are describing here can be attributed to fuel starvation due to blocked jets and or water in carbs, when your engine dies does it die with dry plugs, or wet oily ones?
