Spinning Reel Ball Bearing Location

There are two ball bearings that are located on either side of the crank gear. They are typically located in the body of the reel where the handle shaft goes through. Those play a big role in cranking smoothness.

The number can range from three to as many as eleven. There are spool, clutch, knob and frame bearings for example. Most reels today, particularly high grade reels whether spinning or baitcasting, use precision, stainless steel “radial ball bearings”.
A good fishing reel with fluid motion would have at least four or five ball bearings as a general rule. However, more isn`t always better since the quality and material of the ball bearings also play a part in the operation.
When they`re considering purchasing a reel, anglers can`t help but notice how many bearings it offers. But the truth is that reels with lots of bearings aren`t necessarily better. The quality of the bearings, and the quality of the reel that contains them, are much more important than the number of bearings.
Most quality reels will have at least four ball bearings, which allows the balls to separate within the races equally and provide some level of friction control.
Needle bearings are heavily used in automobile components such as rocker arm pivots, pumps, compressors, and transmissions. The drive shaft of a rear-wheel drive vehicle typically has at least eight needle bearings (four in each U joint) and often more if it is particularly long, or operates on steep slopes.
The general rule is a full race minus one ball. But if the race holds, say, 20.5 balls (ie, has space for more than 1/2 additional ball but not a full additional ball) then you can use as many as will fit (without forcing).
Recommendations for Achieving Proper Fits

Generally speaking, the rotating ring of the bearing requires an interference fit with either the shaft or housing, and the nonrotating ring demands a slight loose fit with its mating component.

Soaking time may vary depending on whether you have grease or oil in your bearings or if you are using an ultrasonic, but a few hours of soaking should be more than enough. You can now either blow your bearings dry with compressed air or allow them to air dry for up to 24 hours.
The first digit indicates the width or height series (dimensions B, T or H). The second digit identifies the diameter series (dimension D). The last two digits of the basic designation identify the size code of the bearing bore. The size code multiplied by 5 gives the bore diameter (d) in mm.

Normally, two or more bearings are used on one shaft. In many cases, in order to locate shaft positions in the axial direction, one bearing is mounted on the fixed side first, then the other bearing is mounted on the free side.
Gear ratios on most brands of baitcast reels range from 5.0:1 to 9.1:1. The pros use high speed models (7.1:1 to 9.1:1) for most applications because they know it is easier to slow down a retrieve with a fast reel than it is to crank faster with a low-speed model.
A higher rated bearing will NOT make you “go faster”, but the quality of a bearing does affect your roll out. The roll out is how long your wheels will continue spinning after you push off. A better bearing will keep you rolling longer, so you can put in less effort to cover the same amount of space.
High precision bearings will run at higher speeds thanks to the superior roundness and finish of the balls and bearing rings. Low precision bearings will have a reduced speed rating as a result of increased vibration at speed.
The ball bearing manufacturing process involves comprehensive procedures to ensure that the end products are smooth and perfectly round.
A high quality steel ball bearing is consider grade 25. The grade number refers to the tolerance per millionth of an inch. A grade 25 is accurate to 25/1,000,000 of an inch. Less expensive ball bearings may be grade 300, which are less round, at 300/1,000,000 of an inch.

I have the penn Senator 15L and lately the reel when over 200 yards of Line goes out then I start to reel it in the reel starts to Slip and no line can be reeled in? Do you have a solution? Thanks
ANSWER : The weight of that much line is caausing the drag to slip. you need to tighten the drag up some more. hope this helps

Will not go into four wheel drive when you engage the switch
ANSWER : I would suspect a faulty switch, or vacuum line. On some vehicles, this can be caused by a bad electrical ground, or broken wire leading to the transfer case. there are some tricks too to unlock it before you start replacing parts, put it on drive then hit the brakes then take the reverse and see if it unlocks. if doesnt work then have the switch, vacuum line, electrical grounds be checked.

Problem with anti-reverse
ANSWER : If it is a multiplier reel most of the lever tension springs are the same. they can be bought from QUENTIN MILLMAN in portsmouth. they have a mail order branch and can be located on line.i have tried making my own springs but the dog leg has to be at the right angle.best buy the right one for a few pounds. regards barry.

How to I fix a spin casting reel?
ANSWER : You should be able to remove the spool by removing the knob on the front of the reel which also is the drag adjustment. With the knob off the spool should pull right off. Hope this helps you
