While the way a manufacturer classifies the fit of a skate may vary, the common rule used by skate manufacturers is: skate width size D is a standard width skate size (Medium Volume) and skate width size EE is a wide width skate size (High Volume).
A proper fit for hockey skates should fit 1-1.5 sizes smaller than your street shoes. Your toes should barely touch the toe cap, while having no more than 1/4 inch of space in the heel. When you`re finished lacing up your skates, they should feel snug with the foot resting flat on the footbed.
HOCKEY SKATE WIDTHS
D and EE width sizes are the most common in the hockey market, with D representing the standard width for a given skate line and EE representing a 3/16″ wider fit than D.
Foot Width:
Boots are typically available in 6 widths: B (extra narrow), C (narrow), D (regular), E (wide), EE (extra wide), and EEE (triple wide). We suggest ordering your boots according to the size chart above. First, measure the length of your foot to find your base size.
Going up the scale, E width is regarded as wide for men, and extra-wide for women. EE width shoes are extra wide for both men and women, and were once hard for women to find, although more companies have offered them in recent decades.
The simplest way is to use your shoe size to find what size skate is likely to be the best fit. Assuming your shoe size is correct, we would recommend selecting a skate box size half to one size below your shoe size.
Hockey Skate Size vs.
Skates run smaller than shoes, and skates fit tight. Don`t be concerned that your skates are a smaller size than your street shoes. Yes, you need the right fit, but you probably won`t get it by going up to your street shoe size.
What`s the difference between D and EE boot width? D boots are considered standard men`s boots, and EE are considered wide men`s boots. E width is typically 1/4” wider than D, and EE is another 1/4” wider than that. So EE boots are generally 1/2” wider than D boots.
Traditionally, a pair of Bauer Vapor skates was best for the player with narrow feet. Low-volume Vapor skates offer a tapered fit with a standard toe box, slim forefoot, snug heel, and tight ankle. The player with classic preferences and regular to wide feet can`t go wrong with a Bauer Supreme skate.
A wide width is 1/4” wider than a medium width and an extra wide width is 1/2” wider than a medium width. People with foot swelling or edema may benefit from additionally measuring their instep girth, which will help them choose the appropriate shoe width.

A regular or medium foot width is a little less than half of your foot size in inches. For example, if you wear a size 7 shoe, then a regular foot width would be around 3.45 inches, whereas a wide size 7 foot would measure anywhere from 3.75 to 4.25 inches.

What is important is that the skates have a firm fit around your feet without being too tight nor too loose. For some people, this means choosing the same size as their regular shoe size, while for others, going a size up gives the right fit. As a first time buyer, we recommend that you go one size up.
Bauer Fit 3
Players looking for volume, with a deep heel pocket, a taller instep and a wider width will find the Fit 3 to be the way to go. Now skaters can get a full volume fit in Bauer Supreme Fit 3 Skates: Ultrasonic, 3S Pro, and 3S models, as well as the Bauer Vapor Fit 3 Skates: 2X Pro, 2X and X2.
For instance, if your foot fits the length of a shoe, but has extra space on the sides, you probably have narrow width feet. Conversely, if your foot fits the length of a shoe, but is extremely snug on the sides of the foot bed, you could have wide width feet.
For women, a men`s Medium (D) is considered a Wide width, while anything E or bigger is Extra Wide. For men, Wide typically starts at E and anything greater than 2E is considered Extra Wide. Not all brands will offer widths in every increment, and 2E/4E are the most common.
Generally speaking, the golden rule for proper skate fit no matter the brand or kind of skate is as snug as possible without being painful or uncomfortable, with the ability to still wiggle the toes up and down.
If the skates feel too loose, your feet will move around a lot which can cause injuries. Hockey skates should fit snugly when you first put them on, but there is no need for extra space in adult hockey skates. You don`t want your skate to move around or feel too tight; it should fit like a glove.
Some skates will come with specific instructions regarding temperature and time of baking. If not, you`ll find home-bakers recommending anything from 175 to 210 degrees Fahrenheit. Once it is preheated, turn it off. Bake for three to four minutes, unless the manufacturer specifies a time.
Make sure you break your skates in slowly, and practice movements that require you to bend your knees and ankles. You can also break in a new pair of skates by wearing them around the house or having the skate shop punch out the leather in areas that rub your feet or ankles.
Hockey skates should be snug, but not uncomfortably tight. When unlaced, your toes should just barely touch the toe cap. When standing in your skates with them fully laced, you want your heel snug in the heel pocket, so your toes have a bit of space at the end.
