Patents for similar table games date back as early as the 1890s in Spain, Europe. However, foosball`s origins date to 1921, when Harold Searles Thornton from the United Kingdom patented the game as “Apparatus for playing a game of table football”.

It`s suggested that whilst Finisterre was in a Montserrat hospital, after being injured by fascist bombing raids in the Spanish Civil War in 1936, he was surrounded by young children with terrible leg injuries just like his, who were unable to play football. This would be his inspiration to develop the foosball table.

Thornton was a British national who patented the game in 1927. Although it didn`t catch on in Thornton`s time, foosball eventually became a significant global pastime between 1950 and 1980, becoming popular first in Europe and then rapidly moving to the United States.
