The letter prefix accompanied the Savage/Stevens/FoxB/Springfield serial number on every gun they made from 1968 on.
All the Stevens factory guns made from 1948 till the passage of the Gun Control Act (requiring serial numbers) had a date code roughly stamped on the center bottom of the action either just in front of the trigger guard or just behind the hinge.

Serial numbers that start with five or more zeros are fancy: meaning 00000001 – 00000999. The more leading zeros, the better.
Many shotguns (Mossberg, Stevens, etc.) have the serial number located on the left side of the frame above the trigger guard. Others (Winchester) have the serial number located on the bottom of the frame forward of the loading port.

The only way to accurately determine the year model of a vehicle is to decode that vehicle`s original Vehicle Identification Number, known as VIN, for short. Starting in 1980, most production vehicles carried a VIN that was made up of 17 characters – a combination of letters and numbers.
As noted, the vehicle`s year is identified by a letter or number in the 10th position from the left in the VIN. As shown above, the 10th character of the VIN indicates its model year.

I have a Winchester Model 190 with serial number B1302781. This model and serial nubmer does not show up on the Windhester site. Can you tell me when this rifle was manufactured?
ANSWER : The model 290 came out first, in 1965. The 190 came out in 1967. The 290 was made until 1973 and production of the 190 ended in 1980. There were approx. 2,150,000 model 190/290 made through the years.Since yours was made before the middle of the production run, and before 1973, I would guess late 60’s to around 1970 or 1971.

Hope this helps.
