Use the tape measure to measure from the front face of each bearing to the end of the axle. Measure to the nearest 1/32″. This must be done for both sides of the roller as the axle extension might be different on each side.

To find the outer diameter of a bearing, you`ll need to measure from one side of the outer ring to the other. To measure the outer diameter of a bearing, place the jaws of your vernier caliper around the outside of the bearing and close it until it meets the outer edge of the bearing.
ABEC includes five tolerances classes: 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 with 1 being the widest and 9 the tightest. Thus, bearings with a higher ABEC rating have tighter tolerances, and that means better precision, higher efficiency, and the potential to accommodate applications requiring high speeds.
During installation, grease is often packed into these bearings by hand. Not only should grease be packed into the bearing, but some grease should be applied to the housing and on the wheel end`s inside surfaces where the bearing sits. This will help prevent corrosion.
There are two common varieties of 608 bearings used in skateboarding: 608zz: `zz` represents metal shielded, that means its protected by metal ring on both side of the bearing. If it was 608z, with a single `z` It means it is shielded from one side with metal ring and other side is open.
Instead, the best way to slow down your skates is to replace your bearings with the Slow Roll bearing alternative, which will slow down your wheels while you learn to skate. As you become more comfortable, you can loosen the Slow Rolls, and then eventually replace the Slow Roll bearings with regular bearings!
Axle diameters of 15 millimetres at the front and 12 millimetres at the rear have become the established standards. On older bikes with a lot of suspension travel, 20-millimetre axles were sometimes installed at the front. Today, two axle diameters dominate the market, whether boost or non-Boost.
Stamped Number on the Axle
To figure out exactly what axle you have, you can look for the Dana stamped bill of materials number. This stamped number can usually be found on the righthand side or on the longer axletube on the same side of the tube as the differential cover, facing the rear of the truck.
This proportion is known as an axle ratio. Axle ratios may be expressed in notation as something along the lines of “3.42:1,” or a “3.42 rear axle.” In either case, it essentially means the drive shaft and pinion need to rotate 3.42 times in order to rotate the axle shafts once.
For today`s standard, an axle to axle length of around 30 to 33 inches is just about average.
Most bearings have an outer diameter of 22 mm and an axle diameter of 8 mm = type 608. 12 STD bearings have an outer diameter of 28 mm and an axle diameter of 12 mm = type 6001.
