The Winchester Model 70 XTR Featherweight is a bolt-action rifle that was introduced by Winchester in 1981. The beautiful classic stock sets it apart from other Winchester Model 70 rifles.
The M.O.A. trigger (Minute of Angle) is pre-set at the factory. The trigger pull weight is pre-set at 3.5 to 4 pounds and can be adjusted within a range of 3 to 5 pounds.
On most stocks (Remington 700 BDL models) the front and rear action screws should both be torqued to 65” lbs. (front screw first; rear screw second).
The Model 70 features the highly popular, Pre-`64 type bolt with claw extractor and Controlled Round Feed, proven under actual hunting and shooting conditions.
270 Winchester is one of two prototypes made with a detachable box magazine. Serial number G2025647 is supported by solid documentation and is certainly among the most unique and desirable Model 70 rifles ever presented to the market.
According to Roger C. Rule`s superb book The Rifleman`s Rifle (a must-have for any M70 enthusiast), the receiver with s/n 0001 was made January 20, 1936, assembled into a complete rifle and released for sale to the public January 1, 1937. The receiver with the highest known s/n, 581471, was made October 18, 1963.
> As a general rule, a serious use pistol should have a trigger no lighter than 4 pounds and ideally no more than 6 pounds.
Military AR-15 platform rifles typically have single-stage triggers that are not adjustable and have a trigger pull of around 5.5 – 9.5 pounds. While this is fine for military applications, it`s not great for those looking to make precision shots at long distances.
Phillips drive or crosshead screws are commonly used in DIY and construction projects. The + slot allows for more torque to be put on the driver to ensure a tight fit, with many sizes of screwheads and drivers, excellent for many applications.
A “Torx plus” screw head allows maximum torque. It is therefore used in securing carbide inserts to their metallic tool holders in metal cutting operation.
The standard Winchester Model 70 offered a 24”, 26”, or 28” inch barrel. Perhaps the best feature of the rifle that made it superior to other guns was the Mauser two lug extractor bolt with controlled round feeding, which was smooth and made for faster firing.
The average accuracy of the Winchester Model 70 Featherweight in . 308 Win. was 1.79 MOA. In his Featherweight introduction in 1952, O`Connor mentions that he shot groups from 1.5 inches to 2.25 inches, and only shot one group that was under 1 inch at 100 yards.
The . 50-110 WCF (also known as the . 50-100-450 WCF , with different loadings) in modern 1886 Winchesters with modern steel barrels is the most powerful lever-action cartridge, with up to 4,000 foot-pounds (5,400 J) of energy.
The Winchester Model 1894 rifle (also known as the Winchester 94 or Model 94) is a lever-action repeating rifle that became one of the most famous and popular hunting rifles of all time.
In sheer popularity, all must bow to the Winchester Model 1894. More than 7 million were made over its more than 100-year production life, and countless deer and other game animals have been felled by John Browning`s most enduring lever action design.
Today, I have proved that the Winchester SX4 is the fastest semi-automatic rifle in the world.” In fact, Raniero Testa obtained his record by breaking the 13 trays in only 1.6 seconds!
It was the Marines who pressed the Winchester Model 70 into service as a sniper rifle in Vietnam. Lacking a suitable precision rifle for issue, the Corps quickly scoured its stateside arms rooms and soon a small quantity of Model 70 target rifles were in the field in South Vietnam, taking the fight to the enemy.
Most stock and issued carbines come with a trigger pull of between 7.5 and 9.5 pounds. We designed to study to assess whether a lighter trigger, 4.5-5.5 pounds, had any effect on marksmanship. causing the hammer or striker to release and fire the weapon (10).
In the case of self-defense, you want to be certain and deliberate, so many gun owners will choose a handgun with somewhere around 5 to 8 pounds of trigger-pull weight. This doesn`t mean the trigger is so heavy it interferes with shooting.
That depends a lot on what is being hunted where, and by whom. Most full-size, bolt-action hunting rifles weigh more or less eight pounds, are around 41 to 42 inches long and have 22- to 24-inch barrels. This means that with scope, sling and everything hunt-ready, the typical rifle rig weighs-in at around nine pounds.
The “Right” Trigger Pull

Competition shooters often opt for a trigger as light as two pounds. The average concealed carry gun, on the other hand, may feature a 5½-pound trigger.

There are a few advantages to having a flat trigger on your lever-action rifle. First, it helps to reduce the amount of pressure that you need to apply to the trigger in order to fire the weapon. Second, it provides a more consistent trigger pull, which can help improve your accuracy.
Hemispherical Head

Considered as strongest among all Formed Heads / Dished Heads. Used in high pressure vessels where the vessel is thickness is also high.

The Importance of Proper Torque

Typically, an under torqued bolt will deform and be unable to provide as much clamping force as needed. An over torqued bolt will break.

Model 70 270 win will not eject spent shells where can i find parts for winchester model 70 xtr 270 win bolt
ANSWER : The ejector pin becomes flattened with sharp edges… it shaves brass, the brass helps stick the pin which is also penned out and a bit larger now. I took mine out and honed it so that it did not shave brass and would slide easily in the hole…. Make sure your spring is back in before you try the pin (You want something to push it back out). Most important… don’t let the pin and spring get away from you. You can look on a chambered and ejected cartridge to see exactly where the bras is being shaved from. In my case it was the very back, outer flange, indicating the ejector pin.Good luck … hint… really use your eyes

The following is Wisner’s rendition & info on the subject.
The difference in the old firing pin and the new one is as follows. The old replaced
style, was totally lathe tuned (round). While the new recall style is similar in lathe
turning on the front and back, but in the front midsection it has two flats milled, one
on each side. This makes the center section stronger. Also replaced is the bolt sleeve
lock pin (firing pin guide) which was made to accommodate this different shaped firing
pin
Part number for the new parts are, firing pin =1391ND, bolt sleeve locking pin =1491ND
The word was at the time this recall was in process was that if the firing pin would
break at the mid section and still remain in the gun as two pieces, the possibility of a
premature discharge before the bolt was locked was possible. This apparently was caused
by the firing pin tip (now not having a retracting spring) to be stuck forward, and
thereby slam-firing upon chambering.
The responsibility for the recall apparently was on Olin, as they were the parent company
at time of manufacture. Olin set up regional recall centers at three established US
gunshops. There was a manufacturing delay in the replacement firing pins, and a backlog
occurred, also some collectors did not like the idea of shipping their guns long
distances. Olin then also authorized other gunshops to make the required alterations.
Upon completion of the recall, the shops were to test fire the firearm and to stamp an
assigned letter on the inside top of the receiver as seen thru the magazine well with the
bolt retracted. The letter “B” represented Bolsa Gunsmithing, “L” was Lefever, and “N”
was for Nu-line Guns. The letter “X” apparently was for all the other independent shops.
However this identification information did not get communicated to some of the smaller
shops at the start of the project. The only way to tell if the gun as been modified, if
the ”letter” is not present, is to take the barrel & action out of the stock, remove the
trigger guard assembly and the try to rotate the firing pin by twisting it. If it does
NOT rotate, then the firing pin recall HAS been performed.
