– The source data for this page comes from and is converted to the California rainfall season (July 1 to Jun 30) that meteorologists use, from the Water Year (Oct 1 to Sep 30) that hydrologists use.
Rainfall is moderately light throughout the year, however. The most rain you`ll likely see and experience will be in the month of January, and you probably will see some rain in February, as well. Great months for likelihood of no rain at all are May, June, July, August and September.
In Oakland, the summers are long, comfortable, arid, and mostly clear and the winters are short, cold, wet, and partly cloudy. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 44°F to 75°F and is rarely below 37°F or above 85°F.
Since records began in 1895, statewide annual precipitation has ranged from a low of 9.4 inches in 1924 to a high of 41.66 inches in 2017. Precipitation in seven of the last ten years has been below the statewide average of 22.9 inches (the dashed line in Figure 1).
The most common way to calculate rain in an area is to measure the depth of rain that fell in a bucket, record it, and start over. Records begin on the first day of the year and end on the last.
26, Oakland has received 69% of its annual rainfall while San Francisco has seen 59%. In the last 16 days, officials say California averaged 8.61 inches of precipitation and the San Francisco-Oakland metropolitan statistical area averaged 13.34 inches.
Oakland`s climate is typified by the temperate and seasonal Mediterranean climate. Summers are usually dry and warm and winters are cool and damp. It has features found in both nearby coastal cities such as San Francisco and inland cities such as San Jose, making it warmer than San Francisco and cooler than San Jose.
Weather & Seasons

Much of California has a Mediterranean-like climate with warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. On the coast, the average daily high temperature hovers around 70°F and up, but can occasionally spike to 80°F or more on hottest summer days; freezing temperatures are rare, even in winter.

California`s climate is marked by two seasons—a wet and a dry.
Average Precipitation in Smith River, California

It is the wettest area in the state where humans live. As of 2020, the U.S. Census Bureau reported that the population of the town is 906. The average precipitation is 80.03 inches, making it the rainiest place in California.

Is this the wettest winter California has ever had? At 27.6 inches so far, California still has quite a way to go to break the record for the wettest year on record: “The largest water year was 1982-1983, which totaled 42.81 inches,” said California state climatologist Michael Anderson.
“Normal” precipitation does not equal “what you should expect.” “Normal” precipitation to a meteorologist is an average of the precipitation values over a 30-year period. Precipitation may very often be either well above or well below the seasonal average, or “normal.”
The highest rainfall levels have so far occurred in the San Francisco Bay Area, where the National Weather Service recorded as much as 4.4in (11.17cm) of rain in some regions.
Generally, rainfall is more abundant in summer, except on the western coasts of North America, Europe, and North Africa, where it is higher during the winter.
To make the rainfall measurement, the observer empties the collected rain into a graduated glass rain measure. Versions of the 5 inch gauge with greater storage capacity are used at sites where readings may be taken infrequently.
Fog is heavily influenced by nearby bodies of water, topography, and wind conditions. Oakland experiences mild fog with temperatures that hover around the 60s and 70s all year round. On average, there are 261 sunny days per year.
Weather. While San Francisco is famous for its fog and year-round 60-something temperatures, across the Bay Bridge, the weather in Oakland is nearly always warmer (and sunnier), especially from May through September.
Known as the largest city in the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area, Oakland is considered a major west coast port city and the third-largest city in the entire San Francisco Bay Area.
In Oakland, the summers are warm, humid, and wet; the winters are very cold and snowy; and it is partly cloudy year round. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 21°F to 84°F and is rarely below 7°F or above 92°F.
As the name suggests, the dry season is characterised by dry weather (or drier than the wet season). It occurs between May and September in the southern hemisphere. During this time of the year, the sun is located over the northern hemisphere, so the southern hemisphere receives less heat and starts to cool down.
Oakland has just about the perfect climate, as long as you don`t really care about seasons. It`s temperate and rarely gets below 40 or above 85… except when it does. And once every couple years it snows!
On average, California winters get cold and snowy with cloudy skies. The temperatures rarely dip below 17°F. Generally, Californians experience temperatures between 29 °F and 87 °F.
A year is actually divided into two seasons: wet (November-March) and dry (April-October). Weather conditions in certain region of Los Angeles are depending on distance to the ocean.
Lake County is truly a land for all seasons. It has a Mediterranean-style climate with four distinct seasons, including a lush and vibrant spring, a long dry and warm summer, an autumn with warm days and cool nights, and a wet, mild winter with occasional snow on the mountaintops.
