As the names imply, fiberglass is made of small strands of glass that have been melted down, while carbon fiber is made of small strands of carbon atoms. Both materials can then be combined with an epoxy resin to create a stiff product that can fit any shape or mold.
Fiberglass tends to be more flexible than carbon fiber and is about 15x less expensive. For applications that don`t require maximum stiffness – like storage tanks, building insulation, protective helmets, and body panels – fiberglass is the preferred material.
Fiberglass and fibreglass are both English terms. Fiberglass is predominantly used in πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ American (US) English ( en-US ) while fibreglass is predominantly used in πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ British English (used in UK/AU/NZ) ( en-GB ).
The key difference between CFRP and GFRP is that CFRP contains carbon as the fiber component, whereas GFRP contains glass as the fiber component. The term FRP refers to fibre-reinforced plastic. These are polymers that can be called composite materials, which are made of a polymer matrix that is reinforced with fiber.
Thermal Properties

Fiberglass has a small thermal expansion coefficient when compared to other metals, so it more or less retains its dimensions when exposed to heat. On the other hand, carbon fiber has a negative thermal coefficient, which means it expands as temperatures go down.

Fiberglass is relatively more cost-effective. Producing long carbon fibers is far more a time-consuming and difficult process, which naturally makes carbon fiber more expensive.
Fiberglass is highly durable and requires little maintenance. It`s stronger and more warp-resistant than vinyl. A fiberglass window can look great 50 years after installation, whereas a vinyl one will last around 30 years.
Graphene is a super material, which has not yet been fully explored by modern science for all its possibilities. The material, with a two-dimensional structure composed of carbon molecules forming a pattern of perfect hexagons, is both lighter and stronger than carbon fiber and Kevlar.
They are transparent, easily formed and most suitable for window glass. But the disadvantage of this glass is its poor resistance to heat (500–600Β°C). They are used for windows, containers, light bulbs and tableware.
While the exact number for the specific strength of fiberglass varies depending on the specific composite, a good average is about 1,307 kN m/kg. For comparison, stainless steel`s specific strength is 63.1, and titanium is 260. That`s a massive difference in favor of fiberglass.
Carbon fiber can be classified in different ways, such as by raw materials and mechanical properties. Raw materials can be divided into polyacrylonitrile carbon fiber, pitch carbon fiber, and rayon carbon fiber. Currently the majority of structural materials are using polyacrylonitrile carbon fiber.
There are two types of Carbon Fibers: Filament and Staple. In the subsequent processing, the fibers are given varieties of the final product forms.
There are many cases where carbon and fibreglass components can get along very well together– a rudder with a carbon stock and a fibreglass foil, for example, can be a very sturdy and reliable combination.
Carbon fibre poles are lighter per energy return. It is naturally a stiffer material, thus providing a higher resistance per gram of weight. The main noticeable difference from a fibreglass pole (of the same flex rating) is that it is lighter to carry and has a smaller tube diameter.
The most common types of glass fiber used in fiberglass is E-glass, which is alumino-borosilicate glass with less than 1% w/w alkali oxides, mainly used for glass-reinforced plastics.
Carbon Steel is much less expensive than carbon fiber and is easier to weld or solder because of its malleability. It also has an excellent strength-to-weight ratio, so you get good performance without using excess material.
Carbon fiber is five-times stronger than steel and twice as stiff. Though carbon fiber is stronger and stiffer than steel, it is lighter than steel; making it the ideal manufacturing material for many parts. These are just a few reasons why carbon fiber is favored by engineers and designers for manufacturing.
A lower efficiency overall: Comparatively speaking, fiberglass products don`t rate as high as some other insulations in terms of resistance (or R-value) per inch. In addition, when temperatures fall, the product loses performance value. Energy hogging.
Fiberglass is strong, lightweight and costs less than carbon fiber composites, and is resistant to corrosion and ultraviolet (UV) damage. Today, fiberglass profiles is used in a wide range of industry sectors including: Building and Infrastructure: including house building and roofing.
Its flexibility makes fiberglass a very affordable option, particularly compared to similar insulation materials like spray foam.
Fiberglass doors are superior insulators and are suited for many climates β€” hot or cold, wet or dry. Unlike steel doors in wet climates, they are not susceptible to rust. Unlike steel, fiberglass does not transfer heat, which makes it a better choice for areas with greater seasonal fluctuations in temperature.
Natural fibers instead of carbon fiber: Ole Hansen, project manager at the Fraunhofer Institute for Wood Research, Wilhelm-Klauditz-Institut, WKI, is using wood, hemp, flax and jute to reinforce plastics – and save energy.
Mechanical irritation and abrasion similar to that of glass fibers can cause many health hazards. Given that carbon fibers are easily broken by stretching, the fibers transform into fine dust during cutting, and this can cause breathing and respiratory problems when released into the air.

How do I install a main spring in a RWS 34 spring airgun
