To Determine Manufacture Date Based on Serial Number: The 1st three numbers of your serial number will always provide your manufacture date. The 1st number is the YEAR of manufacture; the 2nd & 3rd numbers indicate the MONTH of manufacture.
History. The .38 Special was designed and produced in 1898 to be a higher velocity round, with better penetration properties than the .38 Long Colt that was in Government Service in the Philippines during the Spanish–American War.

The Model No. 1 was also the first commercially successful revolver to use the ammunition, as well as the first firearm produced by the Smith & Wesson Revolver Company. The revolver proved so popular during the Civil War, that the factory could not keep up with demand.
Serial numbers and lot numbers are tracked using barcode technology and software. With barcoding, lot numbers can be recognized when received, shipped or both, enabling products to be tracked & traced throughout the supply chain.
A barrel will produce individual markings in addition to a bullet`s land and groove impressions as the bullet passes through, and it is these unique markings that an examiner evaluates to determine whether a given bullet was fired from a particular firearm.
ATF has noted cases where some licensed importers have adopted the same serial number for more than one firearm. These instances of duplication have generally occurred when firearms are received from more than one source.
A. The Federal Gun Control Act of 1968 requires that serial numbers be stamped on all firearms manufactured for sale in the United States since 1968. (1) A factory-assembled pistol normally will have a serial number.
Smith & Wesson Model 10

The revolver was originally known as the Smith & Wesson Model 38 Hand Ejector, but was renamed the Model 10 in 1957. It was one of the first revolvers with a cylinder that swung out when a latch on the frame was depressed.

The Colt Single Action Army is a single-action revolver with a revolving cylinder holding six metallic cartridges. It was designed for the U.S. government service revolver trials of 1872 by Colt`s Patent Firearms Manufacturing Company and served as the standard military service revolver until 1892.

The 45 ACP is a lower pressure round and can handle 21,000 psi of pressure per SAAMI specs. In contrast, the 38 Super is rater for higher pressure and can handle 36,500 psi, which is 14,500 psi higher than 45 and 1,500 psi higher than 9mm Luger.
38mm Special offers low recoil when compared to the 9mm Luger. Bothe these cartridges have lesser recoil as compared to other cartridges like .
40 S&W is also a more powerful round, with a higher velocity and greater stopping power than the . 38 Special.
38/200, is a revolver cartridge developed by Smith & Wesson in 1877. Versions of the cartridge were the standard revolver cartridges of the British military from 1922 to 1963. Though similar in name, it is not interchangeable with the later . 38 Special due to a different case shape and slightly larger bullet diameter.

What is the manufacture date for a S&W .38 special serial number D734779
ANSWER : Hi, the D series (k frame-fixed sight) numbered D659902 through to D750000 were manufactured from late 1974 – early 75. (The adjustable sight frame is listed as K series K frame).

I have a Winchester Mod 1893 12 Ga shotgun that i inherited from my grandfather that was his father’s. I’m trying to figure out the manufacturing date of it. The serial number is A186XX. Is there any way I can figure out which day and month it was manufacture?
ANSWER : You may have to a little Google search, but at one time Winchester had a site where you could check the manufacture dates. If that fails, take it to a reputable gun dealer or gunsmith. I suspect the gunsmith may be the better of the two.

I have inherited a 12 ga remington model II,,,serial #359762,, can you give me an approximate date this gun was manufactured and can the barrel be exchanged or replaced??
ANSWER : Both models 1100 and 1187 have a variety of replacement barrels available for them. They are fairly common. Can’t help you with the date but Remington is an outstanding firearms company to deal with. Try their website.

ANSWER : There is no online S&W S/N database. The info comes from the S&W ‘Standard Catalog’ by Supica and Nahas. Its in its 3rd edition so some later issued guns are not listed
