Manual augers are simple, lightweight tools that are technically not difficult to operate. That said, using a manual ice auger can vary in overall difficulty depending on the thickness of the ice you`re drilling into.
Re: Fuel mix for jiffy model 30 ice augers? 10.5 ounces of oil to 1 gallon of fuel. Use non ethanol gas of you can.
Using a cordless drill and a long, five-eighths inch wood auger bit, you can drill through eight inches of ice in less than 30 seconds. Most cordless drills that are at least 7.2 volts will work, but the type of bit is critical.
For an ice auger that will have you fishing up to 25% faster, consider the Jiffy 46 X-Treme Propane Ice Auger. The serrated blades not only cut quicker, but they last at least twice as long as standard blades. This propane auger is quick to start, and the handles offer a wide stance for a more comfortable grip.
If the auger motor and dispenser door are not receiving power, then you should inspect the actuator and switch. Remove the control panel cover and verify that the actuator contacts the dispenser switch properly and if not, check the actuator housing bracket, switch mounting bracket and the actuator pivot.
What is an auger motor? The term “auger motor” refers to a device, consisting of an electric motor and a reduction gearbox, that turns an auger shaft at a predetermined rate to deliver fuel from the hopper to the burn pot in a pellet stove.
To determine if the auger motor is defective, pull out the ice bucket and turn the bucket auger by hand. If the auger turns freely, use a multimeter to test the auger motor for continuity. If the auger motor does not have continuity, or if the motor is getting power but won`t run, replace the auger motor.
In areas that are difficult to dig — places where the ground is hard, rocky or heavy with clay — an earth auger is easier to use than a shovel.
You need to make sure that you`ve securely tightened thumbscrew(the piece that secures the cable inside the drum or handle). If the thumbscrew is loose, the cable will not rotate at all when you twist the handle. The cable rotation is how the drain snake picks up debris, so if it can`t do this, your auger won`t work.
How hard is it to use a one-man auger? Harder than you might think, especially if the soil is rocky or made of heavy clay. Ergonomic handlebars designed to reduce vibration and fatigue help. But even when using a one-man auger, you may want a partner to help.
Simply put, an auger is a spiral-shaped tool that is used to drill holes into the ground and other surfaces or materials. The spiraling metal shaft with a blade at the end of the device is known as a “flighting”. The flighting rotates to scrape, cut, or siphon out drilled materials.
Auger drilling uses a drill bit that looks a lot like a screw—it`s made of steel casing, with curved flights that are rotated while the rig drill head applies pressure to move the bit further into the ground. The rotation of the flights is important, because it mechanically moves material to the surface.
Mix at 50:1 (20mls oil per 1 litre fuel) when you`re using STIHL 2-Stroke oil.
For a 50:1 ratio of gas to oil, use 2.6 fluid ounces of oil per gallon of gas. For a 40:1 mixture, use 3.2 fluid ounces of oil per gallon of gas. For a 32:1 mixture, use 4 fluid ounces of oil per gallon of gas.

The most common size for ice fishing holes is 6 inches, and it`s a good size for many types of fish. A 6-inch hole is suitable for catching panfish as well as medium-sized fish trout and eater walleyes. One of the benefits of a 6-inch hole is that the fish is less likely to swim back down the hole and escape.
You need to make sure your drill is set to its lowest speed setting and set to “drill” mode. Using a drill on “hammer” setting will likely dull or damage the auger blades and slow down the drilling process. These high-torque drills should include an auxiliary handle, and you`ll want to make sure you use it.

Such augers can survive farm use for up to 30 years and longer with their original tube and flighting. When the time comes, the flighting with the wear edge should be easily replaceable without having to weld or replace the entire length of flight.
Blades and cutting diameter of an ice auger
There are three sizes (diameter of the drilled hole) of blades on the market: 4, 6 and 8 inches. Of course, drilling a smaller hole will be less forceful and faster. However, you should also base your choice on the species of fish you want to catch.
Practical limits are 1,000 RPM for 4-inch augers and 800 RPM for 6-inch augers. Auger capacity and power requirement increases with intake exposure. At long exposures, the power requirement increases at a greater rate than capacity. Normal exposure for standard pitch augers is 2 to 3 times auger diameter.
auger, tool (or bit) used with a carpenter`s brace for drilling holes in wood. It looks like a corkscrew and has six parts: screw, spurs, cutting edges, twist, shank, and tang. The screw looks like a tapered wood screw and is short and small in diameter; it centres the bit and draws it into the work.
