Just like any other 17-digit VIN number, the last 6 positions (12-17) are the trailer`s serial number. The serial number is what makes each VIN unique, since the VIN pattern or squish (positions 1-8, 10, and 11) will be the same, for the most part, for multiple VINs representing the same trailer model in a given year.

Model year encoding
The year 1980 was encoded by some manufacturers, especially General Motors and Chrysler, as “A” (since the 17-digit VIN was not mandatory until 1981, and the “A” or zero was in the manufacturer`s pre-1981 placement in the VIN), yet Ford and AMC still used a zero for 1980.
The metal plate with the VIN number can be found on the trailer tongue, frame rail leading to the hitch or it could be stamped on some metal part of the frame. VINs were first used in 1954 in the United States.
For a hard copy, you could start by calling dealerships to see if they just happen to have one lying around (highly unlikely) and ask how you go about getting a replacement. You also could try the customer service department for the vehicle manufacturer, which is listed in your owner`s manual.
All new cars come with an owner`s manual from the manufacturer. Most owners leave them in the glove compartment for easy reference.
Most automobile manufacturers provide free electronic versions of the owner`s manual for their cars. In some cases, you`ll need to register with the site in order to access the information. Some automakers also require that you provide a vehicle identification number.
The first 2 numbers tell the deck length, 3rd digit is the style trailer, the next 2 digits (4th & 5th) indicate the frame or series, the next digit (6th) denotes the flooring and the last digit (7th) denotes the tail configuration. To Determine Manufacture Date Based on Serial Number: The 1st three numbers of your serial number will always provide your manufacture date. The 1st number is the YEAR of manufacture; the 2nd & 3rd numbers indicate the MONTH of manufacture. Please see the detailed explanation and examples provided below.
The location of the serial number can vary by item and by manufacturer. Even the same products from the same manufacturer can vary. Most items have the number engraved somewhere on the product, or they have a label attached to the item. You can also typically find the information in the packaging.
