I have a 2003 Yamaha Waverunner 1200 XLT that won’t start. It ran fine and when we took it out of water and were cleaning it, it wouldn’t start. We have changed the battery, but still nothing. Is there a kill switch? What else could cause this?
Experienced athletes share their insights in answering this question:
Check the fuses under the front in a round cover, 1 fuse is for the starter, but the cover must be on after checking the fuses.

The best way to jump start a jet ski battery is with another battery that is not connected to anything else. It`s also ideal to use a battery of similar size, don`t try jump-starting your jet ski battery with a tractor battery! Basically, you should only jump start a jet ski from a jump-starter pack.
No! Never run the motor of your watercraft out of the water.
Your jet ski has a jet propulsion engine, which has an impeller that uses rotating fan blades to suck water into the engine and then forcefully eject it. These two motions—sucking in water and then ejecting it back out—are what propel the jet ski forward. Jet skis have throttles, similar to those on motorcycles.
A jet ski not starting is most often a dead or weak battery. A bad starter relay can also be another reason for a jet ski not starting. Usually, when you hear multiple clicks from your jet ski, it`s a bad battery and if it`s one click it`s a bad starter relay.
To de-winterize your jet ski properly, you have to remove the cover and the seat first. Then charge and install the battery, lubricate the moving and metallic parts, flush the cooling/exhaust systems with running water, and clean the hull if it`s needed.
You can start a WaveRunner out of the water without any damage, but the manufacturer recommends that you don`t run the engine over 4,000 rpm! If you can`t attach a hose to the flushing port, you can run a WaveRunner for only 15 seconds, but by supplying water, it can be run much longer.
Unlike cars, jet skis don`t have alternators, but instead they have other types of charging systems that feature a fixed stator with a spinning flywheel around it. Although stators also generate electricity, they can only maintain the battery`s charge.
If you do run your WaveRunner out of the water without proper water supply, it should be for only fifteen seconds maximum. If the jet ski is not in the water or getting a proper supply of water, the engine and exhaust are at high risk of overheating.
This is because a poorly maintained and serviced engine and other parts wear out much sooner. Every owner`s manual strictly outlines required service intervals. Beyond regular service, jet skis need to be winterized in most cases. Additionally, every owner should carefully check their skis before and after rides!
Jet ski batteries are usually 12 volts, but a fully charged jet ski battery should read above 12.6 volts (12.7-13+ volts). As a rule of thumb, you need at least 12-12.5 volts to start a jet ski, but it always depends on the model and some external factors.
Whether you`re looking to buy a new Jet Ski and wondering how long it`ll last or deciding if it`s worthwhile to purchase a used one, generally speaking a 2-stroke engine lasts around 200-300 hours, while a 4-stroke should last around 300-500 hours.
A flipped PWC won`t sink because its hull is designed to float even if it takes on water. There could be potential damage to the vessel if certain parts become and then stay flooded though.
The fuses on a jet ski are located in a plastic box, known as a fuse box or electrical box. This sealed grey or black plastic box is mounted inside the engine compartment usually near the battery or hidden somewhere under the top deck.
If the car cranks when you turn the key, but the engine won`t start, it could be because fuel isn`t getting to the engine. One potential reason for this could be dirty fuel injectors. Over time, the fuel injector nozzles can become clogged with rust, corrosion or debris.
Engine & Fuel Line

If you have a 2-stroke jet ski, you could have a clogged carburetor. This commonly happens if the jet ski has been sitting for a couple of months without a fuel stabilizer. If the carburetor is clogged it won`t start at all, won`t want to run, or just struggle to run.

Do You Need to Winterize a WaveRunner? Yes, you need to winterize your WaveRunner before the winter to avoid damage and keep it in good shape. Even if you live in a warm climate, you have to prepare your WaveRunner for long-term storage if you don`t want to use it for a while.
Can You Go Jet Skiing in the Rain? Jet skis can be ridden in the rain since they are designed for running in a wet environment. These machines even tolerate being flipped over in the water, so rain doesn`t damage them at all.
About the PWC Battery

A PWC battery should last around 3-5 years but there can be other factors that will reduce that number which is usually to do with how you maintain it. Typically if you`re not using it, you want to keep it charged or intermittently charge your battery especially during winter.

How Many Volts Should a Jet Ski Battery Have? A good healthy jet ski battery should register around 12.6 to 12.7 volts. Due to the way batteries discharge it`s very important that you test the battery after it has been sitting (not running) for at least an hour, in order to get the resting voltage of the battery.
In a nutshell, the main reasons why Yamaha WaveRunners are so reliable are as follows: WaveRunners feature the largest engines in each PWC category. They come with lower compression and less cc/HP ratios than competitor models. These engines are simpler, easier to work on, and not so picky about engine oil.
There are a number of controls on a Jet Ski and you should be familiar with all of them before you hit the water. Typically, there are controls for turning the vehicle on and off, and going forward, reverse and neutral.
Generally speaking, the average PWC can go around 60-120 miles on a tank of gas, and the average PWC uses 3-4 gallons of gas per hour.
Contrary to popular belief, jet skis aren`t designed to run in shallow water. This is because their pumps are prone to sucking up objects from the bottom like rocks, sand, or trash. Because of this concern, manufacturers recommend that you not operate a jet ski in water shallower than 3 feet.
How Many Jet Ski Hours Is a Lot? As a general rule, anything over 500 hours is too many hours for a 4-stroke jet ski. If it`s a 2-stroke jet ski, anything over 300 hours is too many.

I have a 2001 Yamaha XL700Z Waverunner. The compression on both cylinders is about 120, it starts and runs fine – dry. Won’t quite idle, but I can start it and rev it up fine (for a short period, of course). However, as soon as it gets in the water, it will barely run – it will start and sputter and you cannot get it to run more than a few seconds or rev up. Take it back out, let it dry, starts & revs fine. It is not getting any water in the casing that I can tell, its almost as if water is getting something wet through the cooling system that I cannot see?
ANSWER : Try cleaning the carbs and the fuel lines, filter

I have a problem with my machine, on occasion, not recognizing when I’m starting, and the display will not start. I have to remove one of the batteries or it will stay on forever. When it starts up, it works fine, no complaints whatsoever. But lately, I’ve not been able to use it due to the start-up problem. I put the batteries in, the display comes on, but it will not start up when I begin motion. The control buttons will not work, either. Please inform me what it is I can do to fix this problem. Thank You

Yamaha waverunner I acquired a yamaha waverunner that has been sitting for 8 years. i finally got it to start and after letting it run dry for about 20-30 seconds…oil and water began running out of the rear below the propulsion outlet and under the rear deck..the motor compartment is free of any oil or damage and the engine still starts. Any idea on the damage or what should I do at this point?
ANSWER : Check for corrosion of the engine as leaving it for long any water left in the system will cause problems.
