Big 80 and 85mm scopes from premium brands can cost upwards of $3,000. But even more approachable scopes will set you back around $1,000. That means you need to think about what you want and need a spotter to do.
Spotting scopes are highly underrated by hunters that haven`t actually used one while out in the field. The right spotting scope in the right setting can be more important than binoculars, can be a supplement to a rifle scope, and it can work in tandem with a laser rangefinder.
A spotting scope is always represented by two sets of numbers. For example 20-60×80. The first set of numbers refers to its magnification (or zoom). For example 20-60x means 20x to 60x variable zoom. The second number refers to the diameter of its objective lens.
One of the main advantages of your average spotting scope over a binocular is its more powerful magnification. Spotting scopes can typically zoom in much closer than binoculars. So your average binocular may have an 8x or 10x magnification, whilst many scopes will have a maximum power of 60x or even more in some cases.
With this Gosky spotting scope and its 20-60x magnification, you can easily see your target at over 200 yards.
Look for an objective lens of at least 60 mm in diameter to provide a bright image. If you want to do a lot of digiscoping, you`ll want your scope to deliver the brightest image possible to your camera. Look for an objective lens around 85 mm. Beware of cheap spotting scopes.
Many astronomy observing sessions also occur at night; a spotting scope can be used to observe faint objects of interest at much lower power than a telescope.
You can use a good spotting scope for viewing open clusters, planets like Saturn, Jupiter and its larger moons, as well as objects like Mizar, the Pleiades, and the moon.
Scope magnification indicates how many times the view through a scope has been increased and is displayed as a number followed by an “x”. A 3x magnification example would mean that the view through the scope is three times that of the actual object or target.
If you`re hunting large game out West or in wide-open areas, spotting scopes are great for setting up and getting a long-distance shot in. For wooded and confined areas or you`re doing spot & stalk hunting that requires more movement on the hunter`s part, a pair of high-quality binoculars will suit their needs more.
Spotting scopes are commonly used in the field of optics, which provide a better visual when performing outdoor activities by viewing them through the scope`s magnifying eyepiece. They are very common in a tactical or hunting setting, typically used for shooting game and hunting small animals.
While you really need a tripod to effectively use your spotting scope, few companies bundle the two together. If you`re planning to buy a spotting scope, you should also make sure you have a tripod, or buy them together.
The most common objective lens size for hunting rifle scopes is about 40mm wide. Some hunters prefer the wider field of view of 50mm objective lenses. They also transmit more light during early morning and late evening, possibly giving a hunter a few extra seconds to make a shot.
The additional stops of adjustment that are available in a 30mm scope are more suited for longer range shooting. While a 1-inch scope can be very effective at longer ranges, shooters that want to be able to dial a scope to the exact milliradian may need the larger tube with the additional adjustments.
Getting into ELR Shooting

Extreme long range (ELR) shooting requires ELR optics. In order to accurately define your bullet`s point of impact, you need optics that can hone in on small spots from long distances. It`s a convenience, really. Rather than using the rifle scope for shooting and spotting.

TL;DR. Spotting scopes offer unmatched versatility and durability for primarily terrestrial viewing (think birding) and some astronomical viewing. Telescopes give you a superior view of the heavens, but are less portable, less durable, and slightly more difficult to use than a spotting scope.
