Insert a flat screwdriver in the screw slots on the sides of the blade reel, instructs YouTube. Tighten the screw to move the blades closer to the cutting bar, if needed. Loosen the screws to move the blades away from the cutting bar. Turn the screws only a fraction of a turn so the adjustment is slight.
A reel mower cuts grass with a scissors-like shearing action, as the moving helix shaped blades pass over the stationary bedknife. The cutting action requires that the bedknife and reel blades, be sharp, matched, and in close relationship with each other.
The cutting height is controlled with a front lever and a rear lever, both on the left side of the machine. To raise or lower the machine, engage the lever, raise or lower the machine, and then disengage the lever.
Push reel lawn mowers are not made to cut very high grass, although they are capable if you have extra time and energy. They cut best when the lawn is 2.5 to 4.0 inches high. If your lawn is overgrown, for best results, overlap your next cut by about a third of the width of the Brill`s blades.
Their clean, short cut is the main reason people buy reel mowers. In fact, only reel mowers can cut down to 1/2-inch or less. If you`ve ever wondered how golf courses get their grass so short, they typically use a gas-powered reel mower.
The top setting for most mowers gives a cutting height between 3.25 and 4 inches. This is best for your lawn, but at a setting of 4 inches you may sometimes see some “laying-over” of turf blades that some people find undesirable. For this reason, some people prefer to mow at 3 or 3.5 inches.
Reel mowers fell out of favor in the 1960s and `70s, probably as yard sizes increased and kids started rebelling against pushing mowers through grass while their friends didn`t have to. Self-propelled mowers made it easy to cut the lawn with little effort on anyone`s part.
If you aren`t familiar with reel mowers, one of the main differences from a rotary mower is that blades spin vertically (north to south) rather than horizontally (east to west), resulting in a different cut of grass. Reel mowers typically work better with lower heights of cut, and tend to offer a better quality of cut.
Most notably, reel mowers are better for your lawn`s health. They provide a clean, scissor-like cut, which helps your grass heal faster (and also makes for a tidier look). In comparison, power rotary mowers rip and shred your grass, which can leave your lawn vulnerable to insect attacks and disease.
It`s generally a good idea to raise your mower`s deck slightly, to about 3”, in the middle of the summer to give the turf a break too. Spring/Fall – The optimal cutting height is 2” to 2 ½” in the spring and fall when the turf is the most vigorous.
The simple act of raising one`s lawnmower can reduce water consumption as well as pesticide and fertilizer use. Because raising the height of one`s lawnmower creates healthier lawns, grass will require less watering and fertilization and it will fight off weeds naturally, reducing the need for pesticides.
Mower blades should be aggressively sharp, but not as sharp as a razor`s edge. You should be able to touch the blade with your hand without getting cut. Contrary to popular belief, a lawn mower blade with a razor sharp edge will not cut grass better.
The more the blades, the more does the mower lose the ability to mow taller grass, because the space between individual blades is smaller. Thus, only shorter grass blades will manage to get into the reel. The maximum mowing height of a self-propelled reel mower is usually between 8 and 10 mm.
Simple to operate, a reel mower works well for small areas. However, with this type of lawn mower, there are some downsides. You must be committed to mowing when the grass is ready, not whenever you get around to it. Sharpening the blades is a hassle.
➢ If it doesn`t cut consistently across the entire width, tighten the contact (with the adjustment posts) and continue back-lapping. ➢ If the contact is too tight, loosen the posts slightly and re-check the cut. The goal is for it to cut paper across the entire width with a minimal amount of contact.
Contact mowers like the Scotts, American, Great States and most others require sharpening on the average of every 1-2 years and spring is the best time to do this. You can purchase a do-it-yourself sharpening kit and sharpen your own reel mower or send it in to the shop.
For most effective results, a lawn mower deck should have a pitch, or height difference of 1/8-inch to 1/2-inch between the front of the deck to the back of the deck.
Push the knobs until they are loose. Move the handle to the upper or lower height position. Pull the knobs until the square edges of each carriage bolt fits into its related square hole. Tighten the handle knobs as tight as you can.
The most common angle for rotary lawn mower blades is 30 degrees. A 30 degree cutting edge angle is typically the angle used for finish mowing.
Generally speaking, the blade should be tight enough so that it doesn`t move around on its own, but you should be able to move with your hand by applying some pressure. The manufacturer should provide a proper tightening level expressed in foot-pounds, commonly found in the mower`s manual.
Note: Torque the blade bolt to 82 N-m (60 ft-lb). Important: A bolt torqued to 82 N-m (60 ft-lb) is very tight. Put your weight behind the wrench and tighten the bolt securely. This bolt is very difficult to overtighten.
Typically, when the mower is cutting grass, the RPM of the majority of mowers drops to approximately 3000 RPM. Some even operate at speeds below 2,500 RPM but can still produce good cuts. When the blades are not cutting the grass, the majority of walk-behind and ride-on mowers operate at 3200 RPM to 3600 RPM.
The aim is to adjust the reel so that it cuts the paper cleanly across its entire width and with as little contact as possible between the reel and the bedknife. To maintain a perfectly precise cut, we recommend adjusting the reel each time before you mow your lawn.
What Can Go Wrong with a Reel Lawn Mower? The mower may cut unevenly or tear grass rather than cut it. A blade can be bent. An engine-driven reel mower may have the same problems that any gas-driven machinery may have.

Penn Spin Reel will not lock after casting
ANSWER : On the front of the spool there is a device to turn to set the drag. Torn it tighter and tighten it until slightly below the breaking point of your fishing line. It isn’t a critical adjustment, it just keeps your line from breaking while trying to land a fish.

Machine will stop adjusting resistance. On start up the machine will usually work. I can go through the calibration procedure and it will calibrate and work normally for 4 or 5 resistance adjustments. It will then stop adjusting. It acts like there is a cable pulled and refuses to adjust, even though I am not getting the warning telling me to “Release cable”
I have modified the wiring harness so that the wires do not fall off from the stepper motor, so this is not the problem. If I shut the machine down and leave it for several minutes, it will come back and work normal again… for a while. I am wondering if there is a problem with the sensors that are detecting a cable pull? Is there a way to disable those sensors to see if that is the problem
ANSWER : I would think that your problem has possibly to do with a faulty power supply, component, see to my mind it is a thermal problem as it heats up,it goes faulty? The Voltage changes and it goes out of spec.. When left to cool, it then is OK… Usually, & from my experience this is a thermal problem. To see obtain some Freeze Spray, from radio Shack or similar, and spray components on the main power board, and others too, use it on any large heat sinked components and see if when you do this the fault clears. Then replace that component(s).

Or as you suggest the sensors that feed the inputs maybe with sensors though one has little option but to replace them and see if this clears the problem.
