Teddy Roosevelt was an avid hunter and this shotgun was made by the Fox Gun Company for Roosevelt to take with him on an African Safari in 1909. In a thank you letter from Roosevelt to the Fox Gun Company, he stated that it was the most beautiful gun he had ever seen.

The Purdey Over-and-Under Shotgun is one of the rarest and most sought-after shotguns in the world. This shotgun is known for its high level of craftsmanship, intricate engravings, and use of high-quality materials. Due to the limited number produced, the Purdey Over-and-Under Shotgun is extremely rare and valuable.
Most individual manufacturers habitually put serial numbers on the weapons they produce. Such numbers can be used to ascertain the name of the manufacture, place and date of manufacture. At least for some manufacturers, a serial number can unlock myriad details about the weapon.
Barrels do not HAVE a serial number. Rifles and shotguns made before 1968 are not required to have a serial number ANYWHERE under US law. Serial numbers are mostly stamped into the receiver NOT the barrel.
Double-Barreled Side-by-Side Tube-Lock Shotgun with Case

Joseph Manton, one of the most influential and esteemed gunmakers in London in the late 18th –early 19th century, patented the tube-lock mechanism in 1818 (patent no. 4285).

A lengthened sight radius will help you shoot more accurately, but while the difference between a 22- and 30-inch barrel is quite pronounced and significantly affects your ability to hit a moving target, the difference between 26- and 28-inch barrels, and 28- and 30-inch barrels, is far less noticeable.

The Model 1897 was so effective, and feared, that the German government protested (in vain) to have it outlawed in combat. The Model 1897 was used again in World War II by the United States Army and Marine Corps, where it was used alongside the similarly militarized version of the hammerless Model 1912.
When it comes to delivering energy to a soft target, the shotgun is king. A standard load of 12 gauge defensive buckshot hits with close to 1,500 ft/lbs of energy, compared to the 5.56 rifle which comes close in some loadings at 1,300 or less.
Yes – during world war 2, US Ships were often issued double barreled shotguns and birdshot to get rid of seagulls.
Finding the Gun Model

Model numbers or names are often stamped or engraved on the barrel or slide, often along with the Make.

Guns made 1968 and after must have unique serial numbers, but only unique within each manufacturer. Guns made before 1968 may have repeating serial numbers, or no serial number at all, and this is permitted because there was no legislation in force that prohibited such practice prior to 1968.

HI I HAVE A CHANCE TO PURCHASE A WINCHESTER 12 GAUGE PUMP SHOTGUN NUMBER E743983 HAS DATE NOV 25TH 1890 BARREL SAYS FULL CHOKE I DONT HAVE THE GUN HERE WITH ME MY SON SAYS ITS IN GOOD SHAPE COULD YOU GIVE ME A IDEA WHAT ITS WORTH
ANSWER : There’s too many variables on this one. First, Second, or Third Model. Standard or Deluxe. Casehardened or Blued. I’d suggest you go to the library and find a copy of The Standard Catalog of Firearms. Page 828 (in the 1995 edition) should give you enough information to identify yours. There’s a page in the front that will help you determine the condition of your gun.

Or I would take to a good gun dealer and have them appraise it for you.
