Most individual manufacturers habitually put serial numbers on the weapons they produce. Such numbers can be used to ascertain the name of the manufacture, place and date of manufacture. At least for some manufacturers, a serial number can unlock myriad details about the weapon.
Serial Number Information

Under current federal law serial numbers must be located on the frame or receiver of every firearm. Serial numbers (or partial numbers) can also be located on many other parts of firearms as well.

Remington Model 700 Serial Number Lookup: Remington Firearms manufactured after 1921 have a code located on the left side of the barrel near the frame that identifies the year and month of manufacture.
The Easiest Way to Identify a Gun Model Type

Long guns tend to have that information stamped directly on the barrel. Pick up a rifle or shotgun and you`ll see it, usually where the barrel meets the rest of the gun. Sometimes it`s on the right side, sometimes on the left.

The “Model” of a pistol distinguishes different guns within the same “Make”. For example, Glock produces various numbered Models, with the “17” and “19” among the most popular. Model numbers or names are often stamped or engraved on the barrel or slide, often along with the Make.
Have it Back incorporates nearly all freely available serial numbers. Utilizing this database, you can verify before or after purchasing an item if said object has been marked as missing or stolen.
The Remington Model 760 Gamemaster is a pump-action, centerfire rifle made by Remington Arms from 1952 to 1981.
ATF has noted cases where some licensed importers have adopted the same serial number for more than one firearm. These instances of duplication have generally occurred when firearms are received from more than one source.
Many pistols, including Glocks, have their serial numbers on the barrels as well as the slides and frames. Only the frame needs to have the serial number. The other parts receive them for tracking and proof that the parts were matched to the gun (“all matching”).

The proud tradition that began with Eliphalet Remington`s first hand-built rifle in 1816, continues to this day. Remington innovation is always ahead of its time, as evidenced by our rich history and long line of legendary firearms.
Caliber is used to describe the size of a rifle or handgun bore and the size of cartridges designed for different bores. Caliber usually is measured as the diameter of the bore from land to opposite land and is expressed in hundredths of an inch, thousandths of an inch, or millimeters.
The M4/M4A1 5.56mm Carbine is a lightweight, gas operated, air cooled, magazine fed, selective rate, shoulder fired weapon with a collapsible stock. It is now the standard issue firearm for most units in the U.S. military.
Rifled firearms date back to at least the 15th century. As some of the earliest had straight rather than spiral grooves, it is thought that the initial purpose may have been to receive the powder residue, or fouling, that was a problem with early firearms.
A Stock Keeping Unit (SKU) is a store specific number and would only be valid at the store where it is being sold it would not be universal.
Generally, scientists will polish the metal with a sand-paper type material to remove chips of metal from the surface. Next they will apply chemical reagents, typically acids, to etch the metal until the number is restored.
Serial numbers help us keep track of products. We can use them to know when a product was made and shipped. This helps us keep our inventory more accurate. Serial numbers also allow you to track when things expire or need to be shipped.
The Remington Model 750 was a semi-automatic rifle and successor to earlier semi-automatic rifles Remington Model 740, Remington Model 742 and Remington Model 7400. Production began in 2006 and discontinued in 2015.
Introduced in 1956 as well, the 572A featured a 22.75 in (57.8 cm) barrel, an uncheckered hardwood pistol-grip stock and a grooved forearm. It was discontinued in 1988. Introduced in 1961 the 572 SmoothBore (Garden Gun) had the same specs as the Model 572A except with a smoothbore barrel. It was discontinued in 1979.
The Remington Model 11-48 is a semi-automatic shotgun manufactured by Remington Arms as the first of its “new generation” semi-automatics produced after World War II. Released as the replacement for the Remington Model 11, it was manufactured from 1949 to 1968 and was produced in 12, 16, 20 and 28 gauge and .
Sometimes, even bullet casings have serial numbers on them, and this has been a useful tool for tracking down criminals. There are many pros and cons to requiring serial numbers on ammunition, and both sides are worth exploring. Currently, there are no strict laws in America requiring ammunition to have serial numbers.
With few exceptions, rifles, pistols, and shotguns can only shoot the caliber or gauge that the barrel and chamber have been made for. A barrel that was made for 30-06 can only use 30-06 ammunition. Anything other than 30-06 will damage the gun and possibly the user.
Print your barcode and take it to a retail store. Ask if you can scan your barcode at the register. (Bribe the cashier with snacks.) The scanner should pick up your barcode and beep, confirming that the barcode is readable.

Where can i find the serial number for a gun – Sport & Outdoor – Others
ANSWER : Serial number postings on firearms vary by manufacturer. Check makers website for locations. Older or antique guns may not have one. Of course
there is always a chance someone may have eliminated it but there should be some evidence of that. A respectable gun dealer shouldn’t charge you to take a look at it.

Help! Just bought a Remington 30 06 for my grandson that has a Bushnell Sportview U4124 4-12power scope mounted on it. I would like to sight it in at 100 yards using a 180 grain shell but I don’t have the owners manual and I don’t understand an on line explanation that I found. This is the on line message: “You’ll see two horizontal crosshairs, put the top one on the animals back then zoom in until the bottom one is on his stomach. Look at the numbers on the zoom dial there should be three lines they are D – deer, E – elk and A – antelope. The numbers are the distance to the game, you then turn the external elevation knob or turret to the matching distance and shoot dead on. No need to hold over for bullet drop. The sad part will be if you didn’t get the other turrets that would have come with it as they are calibrated to different calibers and bullet weights”
I don’t understand how to set the elevation knob to 100yards when its lowest shown number is 150. If I need other turrets how or where can I get them? Thanks, a frustrated grandfather.
