It`s a classic last produced in 1936—the Remington Model 12.
A two or three letter code on the left side of the barrel identifies the month and year of manufacture. The first letter identifes the month, the other letter(s) identify the year.
The Remington Model 12 was a slide-action rifle designed by John Pedersen and produced by the Remington Arms Company from 1909 to 1936.

From August 1912 until first discontinued by Winchester in May 1964, nearly two million Model 12 shotguns were produced in various grades and barrel lengths.
History. Most individual manufacturers habitually put serial numbers on the weapons they produce. Such numbers can be used to ascertain the name of the manufacture, place and date of manufacture. At least for some manufacturers, a serial number can unlock myriad details about the weapon.
Serial Number Information

Under current federal law serial numbers must be located on the frame or receiver of every firearm. Serial numbers (or partial numbers) can also be located on many other parts of firearms as well.

The Model 12 was the first internal-hammer, pump shotgun produced by the company. Designed by Thomas Crossley Johnson it followed in the success of the Model 1897 of which nearly 1 million were produced.
An internal hammer shotgun with an external tubular magazine, Winchester produced the Model 12 from 1912 to 1964, a 51-year production life. Nearly two million shotguns were manufactured during that period in various grades, barrel lengths, and chamberings. A special production occurred in 2006 with limited numbers.

Finding the Gun Model

Model numbers or names are often stamped or engraved on the barrel or slide, often along with the Make.

The Remington Model 742, also known as the Woodsmaster, is a semi-automatic rifle that was produced by Remington Arms from 1960 until 1980.
The Remington Model 513 Matchmaster is a bolt-action rifle, manufactured from 1940 to 1968.
The Obliterated Serial Number Program allows law enforcement agencies to identify recovered firearms whose origins have been masked by serial number destruction or alteration. ATF uses the information to identify firearms trafficking patterns and related crimes.
A serial number (SN) is a number assigned to each individual product in order to distinguish that product from all others. The serial number is sometimes used only for warranty control and sometimes used for both warranty control and for version control.
The Easiest Way to Identify a Gun Model Type

Long guns tend to have that information stamped directly on the barrel. Pick up a rifle or shotgun and you`ll see it, usually where the barrel meets the rest of the gun. Sometimes it`s on the right side, sometimes on the left.

Caliber is used to describe the size of a rifle or handgun bore and the size of cartridges designed for different bores. Caliber usually is measured as the diameter of the bore from land to opposite land and is expressed in hundredths of an inch, thousandths of an inch, or millimeters.
Rifle barrels typically do NOT have serial numbers. The number goes on the receiver. Some European countries require the practice, but those rifles don`t normally make it here. Pistols like the Glock have both to satisfy both US and European laws.
357 Sig. Most of the time, there is just the one number for caliber. However, sometimes there is another number, such as 7.62×39, 5.56×45, or 9×19. The first number is still the caliber, but the second number denotes the length of the cartridge.
The Model 12 was offered with barrel lengths of 20, 26, 28, and 30 inches with Cylinder Bore, Improved, Modified, Full, Skeet, and Trap chokes.
Remington continues producing ammunition, but RemArms, which bought the firearms business in 2020, now designs, builds, and ships Remington firearms. Sturm Ruger & Co., better known simply as Ruger was founded in Connecticut in 1949 by William Ruger and Alexander Sturm.
Winchesters after 1906

Most Winchester records for firearms manufactured after 1906 to the end of the surviving records only contain dates of manufacture. These date-of-manufacture records are called Serial Number Application (SNA) records.

I have a Winchester Mod 1893 12 Ga shotgun that i inherited from my grandfather that was his father’s. I’m trying to figure out the manufacturing date of it. The serial number is A186XX. Is there any way I can figure out which day and month it was manufacture?
ANSWER : You may have to a little Google search, but at one time Winchester had a site where you could check the manufacture dates. If that fails, take it to a reputable gun dealer or gunsmith. I suspect the gunsmith may be the better of the two.

Trying to find the value, manufacture date etc. for a Colt Model No. Serial number as found on cylinder door, 7 706. Top of Barrel reads “COLT’S PT.F.A. MFG. CO HARTFORD CT U.S.A.

The colt pistol is a double action 45, w/ black plastic grips, lanyard ring on bottom of grip, RAC on left side above grip. Appears to have additional initials on right side above grip-JTT, US under cylinder on right side etc.

Trying to find the history, manufacture date etc. and value.

I have inherited a 12 ga remington model II,,,serial #359762,, can you give me an approximate date this gun was manufactured and can the barrel be exchanged or replaced??
ANSWER : Both models 1100 and 1187 have a variety of replacement barrels available for them. They are fairly common. Can’t help you with the date but Remington is an outstanding firearms company to deal with. Try their website.

On my model 770 in 300 mag. new right out of the box, cleaned in and oiled it but the bolt action was still sticky and after firing a box and a half though it it still will not eject the spent casing and I have to turn the gun on it’s side and let it drop out on it’s own. I have even called Remington’s repair shop in Or. and they can’t guarantee it will work as he said it was nothing but a cheap rifle from Remington. I will be sending to Remington’s repair shop and if they can not repair it what rights do I have to get my money back? As I don’t feel that I should keep on having to pay for shipping all the time for there poorly made rifle.
