Basics of how the Vespa gearbox works
The clutch (2) can connect and disconnect the crank force to a cog that drives the primary gear (3). When the clutch lever is pulled in by the rider, the clutch plates are lifted and the clutch spins freely without driving the primary gear.
The functionality that makes the gearless vehicles transmission possible is known as CVT(Continuously Variable Transmission.). This functionality does the work for keeping the engine running while the bike is not in motion.
What does the Vespa clutch do? On a Vespa, the driving force of the crankshaft is transmitted to the gearbox by a wet clutch system.
Sudden failure is most often caused by a broken or loose clutch cable, linkable or a failed hydraulic master/slave cylinder. There can also be leaks in the hydraulic line or even the disc could be contaminated with something like dirt or debris.
To engage the clutch, the clutch pedal is released and the release bearing moves away from the pressure plate. This action allows the pressure plate`s springs to force against the clutch disc, engaging the clutch to the flywheel.
“Riding” the clutch is the most common reason for premature clutch failure. Even the slightest pressure on the pedal will partially disengage the clutch, causing the release bearing, pressure plate and flywheel to overheat.
If the motor spins when the throttle is applied but the chain or belt and rear wheel do not move the problem is either a chain or belt that has fallen off, a belt that is not properly tensioned, or a sprocket or cog that is damaged, missing, or not properly attached to the motor`s shaft.
Wet clutches are widely used in motorcycles and dirt bikes. The term simply means the clutch is lubricated with oil, as opposed to a dry clutch. Friction plays a big role in proper clutch operation.
Unlike dry clutches, wet clutches are covered in engine oil, which allows the clutch plates to cool. Because of this, wet clutches can sustain more abuse than dry clutches. Another reason wet clutches are a more popular choice is because they`re quieter at idle, which makes them better for stop-and-go traffic.
A clutch that won`t engage at all means there is serious damage somewhere. Check for a bent linkage, a seized slave cylinder, or a seized throw-out bearing. Beyond those, check for binding in the linkage, a corroded cable, or a failed friction plate.
Pressing the clutch and raising the RPM to 4000 to 5000 can be destructive for the entire car clutch system. A few wheel spins might make you replace your clutch place or even the entire clutch system.
The first thing to inspect is your entire clutch cable. They may be worn out over time, or simply need to be lubricated with special oil or powder. After the cable is lubricated, you also need to re-set the cable and adjust it to your convenience.
The average clutch lasts anywhere between 30,000 to 100,000 miles or more. However, most last about 60,000 miles before they need replacement.
Clutch failure can happen gradually or all at once. Sudden clutch failure can be the result of low hydraulic fluid, a stretched clutch cable, or master/slave cylinder failure – but what are the symptoms of gradual clutch failure?
The clutch feels soft The clutch should take a bit of pressure to move, and when you press down, you should be met with some resistance. If the clutch pedal feels `spongey` or feels like you`re pushing it into a block of warm butter, your clutch is likely going to need to be replaced soon.
When the clutch pedal feels really loose and weak (as in you step on it and it drops to the floor with little to no effort), then this is definitely a sign that the clutch plate is worn or there is an issue somewhere in the clutch assembly.
First, we should note that it is never a good idea to drive a car with a broken clutch, as this can cause more damage to the vehicle. It should only be done as a final option. However, there may be a point when you need to move your vehicle and the clutch is broken.
Waiting at traffic lights or junctions with the clutch down, first gear engaged and your foot on the brake can put unnecessary strain on the clutch. It is much better to change into neutral if you are going to be stopped for any length of time and to use the handbrake to keep the car stationary.
If you notice a change in how your clutch feels, then this can be a sign that something isn`t working as it should. A soft or spongy feeling can indicate that your brake fluid is low and causing the clutch slave cylinder to struggle.
A broken clutch takes away the connection between the engine and transmission, leaving your vehicle with the inability to move correctly. With a manual transmission, you can still drive your car. Driving with a broken clutch is NOT recommended.
Generally, however, the reset button is typically located on the underside of the scooter`s deck, near the battery pack. If the button is not clearly marked, look for a small circular depression or a tiny hole that may be covered by a rubber plug.
There are many reasons why a scooter will randomly lose power, but most of the time it`s the batteries. In rare cases, it can also be the motor, but when it`s the motor it usually has a few indicators that you can look out for.

Tips to make sure you`re getting good quality clutch fluid: Choose a well-respected brand of DOT-4 brake fluid. Don`t be fooled by “clutch fluid” labels on higher priced bottles. It`s the exact same thing as what`s in the brake fluid bottle.
