A total solar eclipse is only visible from a small area on Earth. The people who see the total eclipse are in the center of the moon`s shadow when it hits Earth. The sky becomes very dark, as if it were night. For a total eclipse to take place, the sun, moon and Earth must be in a direct line.
For an eclipse to occur, the Moon and Earth have to be on the same orbital plane with the Sun, so the Earth`s shadow can be cast onto the Moon from the Sun. This is why lunar eclipses only occur on average one or two times a year instead of every month.
When watching a partial or annular solar eclipse directly with your eyes, you must look through safe solar viewing glasses (“eclipse glasses”) or a safe handheld solar viewer at all times.
Lunar eclipses occur at the full moon phase. When Earth is positioned precisely between the Moon and Sun, Earth`s shadow falls upon the surface of the Moon, dimming it and sometimes turning the lunar surface a striking red over the course of a few hours.
The total phase of the eclipse can only be seen from within the Moon`s umbra, which only covers a small area on the Earth`s surface. Since the Moon`s umbra is always surrounded by a penumbra, the eclipse appears partial if you are just outside the spot where the umbra hits.
Sometimes when the Moon orbits Earth, the Moon moves between the Sun and Earth. When this happens, the Moon blocks the light of the Sun from reaching Earth. This causes an eclipse of the Sun, or a solar eclipse.
A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon`s shadow falls on the Earth. They do not happen every month because the Earth`s orbit around the Sun is not in the same plane as the Moon`s orbit around the Earth.

Exposing your eyes to the sun without proper eye protection during a solar eclipse can cause “eclipse blindness” or retinal burns, also known as solar retinopathy. This exposure to the light can cause damage or even destroy cells in the retina (the back of the eye) that transmit what you see to the brain.
You can go outside during a total eclipse as well! The sun may be strong, but it`s not going to burn your skin off or do anything crazy like that. The only thing you don`t want to do is stare directly at it without wearing eclipse glasses.
Is it safe to look at a solar eclipse? Normally the sun is so intense that it is difficult and very dangerous to look at it directly. Looking at the intense light from the sun even for just a few seconds can cause permanent damage to the retina (part of the eye directly responsible for vision).
The UMBRA is the region of total shadow, while the PENUMBRA is the surrounding region of partial shadow. In the penumbra, sunlight is only dimmed and not blocked. The umbra of the Earth`s shadow is about 1.4 x 10^6 km long and points directly away from the sun.
Total solar eclipses last anywhere from 10 seconds to about 7.5 minutes. In the span of 12,000 years from 4000 BCE to 8000 CE, the longest total solar eclipse will occur on July 16, 2186, and will last 7 minutes 29 seconds.
It`s only about 480km (300 miles) wide when cast onto the Earth`s surface. Solar eclipses are therefore only visible from within a narrow path across the Earth, making it difficult to get to a location to see one. This is why they are visible less often from any given location.
The umbra (Latin for “shadow”) is the innermost and darkest part of a shadow, where the light source is completely blocked by the occluding body.

Lunar eclipses are more widely visible because Earth casts a much larger shadow on the Moon during a lunar eclipse than the Moon casts on Earth during a solar eclipse. As a result, you are more likely to see a lunar eclipse than a solar eclipse.
A minimum of two eclipses (one solar and one lunar, in either order) happens in one eclipse season. A maximum of three eclipses is possible (either lunar/solar/lunar, or solar/lunar/solar). In 2023, the eclipse seasons are in April-May, and then again in October.
Instead, because the Moon`s orbit is tilted at about 5 degrees to Earth`s orbit, its shadow usually misses Earth. Solar (and lunar) eclipses therefore happen only during eclipse seasons, resulting in at least two, and up to five, solar eclipses each year, no more than two of which can be total.
