Valve Clearance Tips

Recommended valve-to-piston clearance is generally 0.080-inch minimum on the intake side and 0.100-inch minimum for the exhaust valve. The exhaust needs a little more clearance because it expands more with heat.

The inlet valve gap should be between 0.10 – 0.20mm (0.004 – 0.008 inch), the exhaust valve 0.20 – 0.30mm (0.008 -0.012 inch), if they`re within this range there`s no need to go any further, just reassemble everything in the reverse order and check them again in another 30,000km or so.

Rule of nine

With any given valve open, count what number valve that is from the front. Subtract that number from nine. Whatever number you`re left with is the valve you`re in position to set. So, with number 1 rocker opening its valve, you`ll be setting clearance on (9 minus 1), number 8 valve.

This is the total volume remaining in the cylinder at the end of the piston stroke. This consists of the volume between the end of the piston and the cylinder head, in the valve ports and the volume in the suction valve guards and the discharge valve seats [26].
If the valve clearance is too tight, then the valve will open earlier and close later then intended. If it too loose, the valve will open later and close earlier. The effect of setting the valve lash too tight can result in the valve not fully closing on the seat.
To adjust the valve clearance, slacken the locknut with a ring spanner and screw the ball in or out of the rocker a tiny amount, checking the clearance betwixt valve and rocker with feeler gauges. Once it`s correct, tighten the locknut and check again.
FYI most automotive and engine manufacturers use the NIST standard temperature of 68 F (20 C) as a baseline for temperature dependent settings like valve and bearing clearances.
Valve clearance is required because the valve is closed to the camshaft as it expands thermally due to the rise in temperature. Conversely, proper valve clearance allows the intake and exhaust valves to operate ideally when the overall engine temperature rises.
Too much or too little valve clearance can result in poor performance or a rough idle because the engine can`t “breathe” normally and operate at peak efficiency. Too much clearance means the valves will likely clatter and, over the long term, cause damage to the valves, camshaft lobes or rocker arms.
It can cause extreme heat damage and complete valve failure if clearances are too tight. Using too tight clearances may result in valves not closing fully (or not closing for enough time). Ensure your engine valves are always adjusted according to the manufacturer`s instructions.
However, if the valves become bent, they won`t form a proper seal. That`ll allow air and fuel to flow back into the intake or into exhaust, where it will combust. Luckily, this is a very uncommon reason for a modern car to start backfiring.
Opinions may vary between piston and valve manufacturers, but a popular consensus is a minimum clearance of . 080-inch for the intake and . 100-inch for the exhaust. The exhaust valve expands more due to heat from combustion, and therefore needs additional clearance.
Clearance volume = 0.000cc [(bore ÷ 2)2 x 3.1416 x deck height x 16.387] Gasket volume = 9.9854cc [from manufacturer but formula is (bore ÷ 2)2 x 3.1416 x gasket thickness x 16.387] Chamber volume = 118cc [Value from manufacturer but could be determined and/or confirmed through measurement]
The valve will open sooner and close later. You may observe air leaks in the combustion chamber, leading to less available air for proper combustion. The power and performance of the engine will decrease. Fuel consumption of the engine will increase.
The “Rule of Thirteen” is used to know which valve to adjust on a 6 cylinder engine. If valve #1 is open (when the adjuster side of the rocker is up, and the spring side is down) then which valve do you adjust to get to a total of thirteen? The answer is valve #12.

Need the wire diagram to rewire my Ariens lawnmover to bypass the safety switch. It is Ariens GT-19 model # 931026 Serial # 001463.
Can you help? It is an old Ariens mower but still runs good but now I need to bypass the safety switch in order to run it any longer. The local Ariens dealer said I need to go through the internet and get the wire diagram as they cannot give it to me directly. ANSWER : Here is owner manual:http://apache.ariens.com/manuals/030305C.pdfusually the switch is behind the ignition, sometimes at the N position of gearshift, just look for a switch with one wire coming in & one going out (usually the same color); disconnect the two wires & jumper them together to bypass the switch. Looks like yours has one under the seat.

ANSWER : Hi I had the same problem and I fixed it by just simply pumping the gun at a faster rate. For some reason when I pumped it slowly air would leak out and no pressure would build up similar to your problem, but when I started to pump it rapidly pressure would build up. Though this little fix works I might just exchange mine because I don’t think the gun should have this problem.

Hello, i think i figured out what it was, after breaking down the valve again i was looking at the rubber that is around the valves and i was thinking at first this wasnt an extra part, but come to find out after many hours of researching online it is an peice that comes off but its just glued on, its a (Spider) gasket. So do u think if nothing is wrong with the valve itself that if the spider gasket is wearing away and starting to get britle that it will let the debris i vacuum up come back in the pool and let the backwash valve leak when its on the filter position? I cant thank u enough for helping me. You sure have lead me in the right direction and saved me alot of money. Otherwise i would of probably gave up and bought another one….thanks and let me know if u think that the buying a spider gasket will solve my problems
ANSWER : The spider gasket that you refer to is what seals the chambers from each other. Leaking here can have a large impact on how well the valve is able to do its job. But, I don’t remember seeing one in the parts diagram. If you are able to obtain one, then by all means, replace it if you can. As I said earlier, you are essentially rebuilding the valve assembly. If something looks worn, now is the time to repair / replace it during reassembly. I also have a suggestion for you as well. Take good pictures, document everything that you do when you disassemble and reassemble the valve. Then write up a tip (gotta become an expert) for others to read through and be able to service their own equipment. I was surprised to see that there were as many other questions asked about the same filter that you have. Highly recommend that you do this. As many times as you have taken this apart and put it back together, you are fast becoming an authority on it!Glad to see that you are sticking it through, and not throwing in the towel. After all is said and done, you will have a working knowledge of how your filter works, and be able to identify issues in the future before they become a problem. Congratulations!

I bought the Knoxx adjustable stock for my mossberg 500. The forend that comes with it is realy nice and Ide like to use it, but the end nut will not reach the threads. Do i need to buy a new adapter nut that is longer to secure my forend ? I saw one for sale by houge but wasnt sure if that would work on the knoxx forend ?? I realy like the forend sent by knoxx, would be a shame not to use it. What a waste to give that nice piece away and not give the adapter to use it ?? Thanks Noel
ANSWER : That forearm is designed for the 7 5/8″ slide action tube. I’m guessing yours is the 6 1/2″ slide action tube. Take the forearm off your tube and measure it with a ruler. From the very back edge of the action bar collar….that round part the bars are pinned to….all the way to the front edge of the threads. If yours is a 6 1/2″, the Hogue adapter won’t work. You’ll need to buy a new slide action tube. That Hogue adapter is meant to let you use the Hogue rubber coated forearm on your standard sized tube….the Hogue rubber forearm is a hair longer than the standard tube. It won’t give you the length to make up the entire shorter tube length. If you’re handy with a dremel, you could go adapter plus a bit of careful cutting but I won’t suggest you do it if you aren’t certain of your skills.

Velocity stuck at 330 fps
ANSWER : The velocity screw is on the left side, about 45 degrees facing down. Turn clockwise (into the marker) for the velocity to decrease. Turn counter-clockwise (out) for the velocity to increase. Be careful so that you do not turn it all the way out and lose the screw. Depending on the air source you use, you may want to turn the screw a little and then chrono and repeat.
