If you want to figure out what kind of oil your car takes, refer to your vehicle`s owner`s manual. The manual will shed light on which oil type is the best match for your vehicle. What if you don`t have the manual handy? Another option is to look up the recommended oil type for your vehicle online.
The best way to determine which engine oil grade you should use for your vehicle is by looking in your owner`s manual. The vehicle manufacturer will describe the correct viscosity grade required for your car`s engine. Newer vehicles often require lower viscosity oils to protect their advanced technology engines.
5w30 can be used by different types of vehicles and in various ranges of temperatures, but are generally ideal for colder temperatures. 5w40 on the other hand is often used in higher mileage engines and they will perform the better of the two in warmer temperatures.
You can use 10w30 instead of 5w30 oil since both meet the SAE standard for viscosity at operating temperatures. Generally, the viscosity difference between the two is neglectable. However, it`s important to note that a 10w30 oil will move slower than a 5w30 oil in cold environments.
You should always use the oil recommended by your vehicle`s manufacturer. However, 5w30 oil can function in temperatures as low as -30ºC and as high as 35ºC, making it an ideal choice if you drive your car in a place with relatively high seasonal temperature variations.
Here`s the rundown for our purposes here: In a pinch, while it`s generally OK to use an oil that`s one viscosity rating higher or lower than what the manufacturer recommends, it`s best to use the viscosity given in the owner`s manual. When considering 5W-20 vs 5W-30, they are the same viscosity when the engine is cold.
In practice, this means that each oil is just as viscous at lower temperatures and will remain viscous at -30°C, however 5w40 oil outperforms 5w30 oils at higher temperatures, being effective up to ambient temperatures of 50°C, as opposed to 30°C.
What happens if you use the wrong engine oil? By mistake, we put 10W40 instead of 5W30. Nothing catastrophic, the engine won`t explode the moment you turn the key. HOWEVER, with the oil being too thick the engine won`t have adequate protection and it`ll wear out faster (especially the bearings).
Thanks to their close viscosity, mixing the two oils will have no damaging effect on the engine. It`s worth remembering that 10W-30 has more density than 5W-30, so make sure you pour an appropriate amount when mixing.
Too much oil in the engine can also cause the pressure on the crankshaft to increase, causing oil to enter the exhaust pipe from the crankshaft into the combustion chamber, blocking the combustion chamber hole with oil and eventually clogging the engine. Wet spark plug; excess oil will also flood the spark plug well.
Most oil experts say it`s better to drain the oil when it`s hot instead of when it`s cold, for several reasons: Oil viscosity is thinner when it`s hot, so it drains more quickly and completely out of the engine than when it`s cold.
How do I find out what oil my car takes? You can usually find the oil grade stamped on the engine oil cap, or you can find the type and grade in your car`s owner`s manual or maintenance guide.
5w40 is better for starting your engine at low temperatures as it flows more easily at these temperatures. When the engine is running and hot, 5w40 and 10w40 have high viscosities and are equally effective in protecting against engine wear.
The difference between 10W-30 and a 10W-40 is the high temperature viscosity. Obviously, a 10W-40 is thicker than a 10W-30 at high temperature.
Simply put, the shelf life of conventional motor or “lube” oil is up to five years. It`s not something that goes bad in a couple of months. It`s impossible to predict exactly how long motor oil shelf life is because petroleum stability (how well it resists change in its properties) is situation-dependent.
The wrong engine oil can cause engine damage because it does not properly lubricate its components. This will lead to metal-on-metal contact since the moving parts are not being lubricated. Friction quickly follows, causing engine parts to wear.
Answer: There is absolutely no need to switch to 10W-30 motor oil in the summer if 5W-30 is an acceptable grade for your engine. While some car manufacturers still advocate the use of 10W-30 (or even 10W-40) as an appropriate engine oil option for summer use, it is completely unnecessary.
Applications. Mobil 1™ 5W-20 is recommended by ExxonMobil for all types of modern gasoline-powered vehicles, including high-performance turbocharged, supercharged, multi-valve fuel injected engines found in passenger cars, SUVs, light vans and light trucks.
Used mineral-based engine oil is on the Proposition 65 list under the entry for “soot, tars, and mineral oils (untreated and mildly treated oils and used engine oils)” because it can cause cancer. Exposure to used engine oil may increase the risk of cancer.
Whether you choose to change your car`s oil with a bargain brand or a brand you trust, both choices will have immediate and long-term effects on your vehicle. Engine oil is one of those products – like light bulbs – where lower-cost truly does mean lower quality.
5W30 has a viscosity rating of 30 cP, which is thinner than the 40 cP viscosity rating of 5W40. While the two oils have different viscosities, they are both considered light viscosity oils. Light viscosity oils are thinner and flow more easily than standard viscosity oils, which are thicker.

To keep it simple, you can also think of oil viscosity as the thickness. Oils having a higher viscosity resist motion, while those having lower viscosity are runnier. Between 5w20 oil and 5w30 oil, the higher the number, the thicker the oil is. 5w30 oil is thicker and more viscous compared to 5w20 oil.
Insert the dipstick into the tube slowly and push it all the way down. Now withdraw it and look closely at the tip, which should have oil on it. If the level of the oil is between the two lines, your vehicle has enough oil. If it`s at the low mark or below, it`s time to add a quart.

I want to change the oil in my yamaha big bear atv, early 90s. what type of oil do I need to use and is there anything else that goes along with the oil change-?filter
ANSWER : HELLO; Yes you will need a filter located lower left side behind the peg ,you’ll see a cover thats about an inch and a half wide with three allen head bolts, pull out the filter and when you replace it make sure the hole is towards the engine. Now about oil there are several ideas on this so heres my ( 2 cents ) I repair quads and have for several years, you have a quad that has a wet clutch if it is an older one and semi automatic so you don’t want to use syn. oil as this will wear out your clutch sooner, I would recomend, yamalube,it will cost up to $5.00 a qt. but you only need two and a quarter qts. to fill your quad. GOOD LUCK, and remember you must be fast, because I was haulin *** when I passed you!
