Cyclone separators are used with shop vacs and dust collectors to remove 85% to over 99% of all of the dust before it gets to the filter. Without a cyclone separator you will have to clean your filter 5x to 100x more often, depending on the type of dust you are collecting.
To increase cyclone separation efficiency, reduce the amount of solids in the feed, if possible. To further increase efficiency, reduce the size of the cyclone bottom outlet (if possible) to reduce the amount of fines and water in the coarse product.

A two-stage dust collector consists of a first stage cyclone, a blower and a second stage after filter. A cyclone separator is a cone shaped vessel into which the dust-laden air enters. The dust particles` inertia causes them to move toward the separators outer wall.
As more gas enters the separator, the pressure rises. A pressure controller is mounted on the separator-gas space or on the outlet-gas piping. The controller sends a signal to the pressure-control valve in the gas-outlet piping telling it to open when the pressure is higher than the set point.
If the pressure is too low, too many of the light and intermediate components will be lost to the gas phase in the separator, resulting in less liquid going to the stock-tank. This phenomenon can be calculated using flash equilibrium techniques.
Variants. “High throughput” cyclones have a diameter greater than 1.5 m and are suitable for separating particles that are 20 µm or larger. “High efficiency” cyclones (pencil cyclones) have a diameter which lies between 0.4 and 1.5 m and can be used to separate particles that are10 µm or larger.
