Note: Never start an outboard motor without a water supply—it must either be in the water or connected to a hose providing water. Water lubricates the vanes of the rubber water pump impeller, and running the motor without a water supply for even a few seconds can damage or destroy the impeller.
The early Mercury FourStroke engines were originally manufactured jointly with Yamaha; Mercury provided the block, crankcase, crankshaft and connecting rods, while Yamaha produced the cylinder heads for the 50hp. The 9.9 was built with a Yamaha powerhead.
Mercury Marine is a marine engine division of Brunswick Corporation headquartered in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. The main product line is outboard engines. It also produces the MerCruiser line of sterndrives and inboard engines. Some manufacturing is in Fond du Lac, while 40-60 HP engines are made in China.
Outboard Engine

Outboard motors come in a large range of sizes, horsepower, and power sources. These include: electric or trolling motors, gasoline-and-oil mixture two stroke engines, gasoline-only four stroke engines, and diesel engines.

Tests prove that Globe`s Run-Dry® impellers outperform standard neoprene or rubber impellers and are guaranteed to run-dry for up to 15 minutes.
Durable construction, backed by a 3 year limited non-declining warranty, ensures that Mercury Outboard Motors deliver reliable power and performance every time you hit the water.
Brunswick is the parent company of Mercury Marine, a major outboard engine manufacturer, and decided to procure products with Tohatsu, which had been improving its technology and the productivity of outboard engines.
As well as marketing outboards under its own brand, Tohatsu outboards are rebadged and sold as other brands. In 1988 Tohatsu and Brunswick Corporation set up a joint venture named Tohatsu Marine Corporation to produce outboards for Mercury Marine. All Mercury outboards with less than 30 HP are rebranded Tohatsus.
Suzuki Marine outboard motors are manufactured at the Tokoyama facility in the Aichi prefecture of Japan, and in factories in several countries abroad.
Performance. If all things were equal, including the horsepower and hull weight, a single outboard should be faster in the water. A single gear case and propeller would normally create less drag in the water than two. And, the weight of two smaller outboard motors will usually exceed the weight of one large motor.
Because a 2-stroke engine only uses two piston strokes to generate one revolution of crankshaft power, it generates much more power than a 4-stroke engine of the same horsepower. This gives 2-strokes better top-end speed and acceleration.
The impeller can be easily damaged – Since the impeller is made of rubber that bends inside the casing, the chances of wear and tear are higher. Moreover, constant wear will cause the impeller to shed rubber, leading to the presence of rubber in the fluid.
Running the engine without a water source for any length of time will cause damage, so you`ll need to attach a hose to the motor`s water intakes. Some newer motors have built-in attachments that accept a hose nozzle. If your motor doesn`t, you`ll need a set of motor flusher muffs.
Can I start an air-cooled boat motor out of water for a test? The short answer is yes, as long as the outboard motor is totally air cooled without impellers and in a very short period of time.
Every boat owner is different and how far you decide to push your marine engine is in your hands. However, running your boat at Wide-Open Throttle is not bad for your engine and can even help clear out carbon build up.

Bag and Muffs: Engine should be vertical, run no more than 800-900 rpm in neutral for 15 minutes with the prop removed.
To run your outboard dry you can either disconnect the fuel line or turn off the fuel tap while the engine is running. This also forms part of the next step as you will need to run oil through the engine at the same time as the last of the fuel runs through and it cuts out.

We have a 1967 2 strok mercury 65 outboard motor. wont start cold
ANSWER : Wow.It sounds like some people I know.Late starters.Don,t get out of bed ’till 10 am.With all you have written, a check on the operation of the choke (cold start) would be worth looking at.As you crank the motor, squeeze the fuel bulb at the same time and see if that also may help.Hope this helps

Motor was running great, but it died slowly and never start again
ANSWER : Check to see if you have a spark -then check if you are still getting fuel-and how old is the fuel-because it is recommended ,an im assuming its a 2 stroke motor, that the fuel should be replace with a fresh 2 stroke mixture every couple of months as the mixture jellyfies and sludges up the carb etc-try those first

I have a 1991 Yamaha 250 outboard motor. I can connect the harness from the control box to the motor harness, put the motor in nuetral, and the motor will turn over but it will not start. I can disconnect the conrol box from the motor, jump it direct from the battery, and it will start. What might be the problem? I even bought a new control box but still have the same problem.

Thank you,
Dean Youngstrand

ANSWER : I would check for power coming off of the ignition switch. The ignition switch is what sends power to the control box to the coil. You can also check for power on your coil. But I would bet that it is your ignition switch.

2005 Mercury 50hp 2-stroke outboard motor very sluggish when accelerating, stalled twice when trying to exceed 50% throttle capacity. Last time I used my boat was about two months ago, so I don’t think bad fuel is the problem. I let my boat idle at the boat launch for probably 5 mins before taking off. I didn’t notice any weird sounds or any indication that my motor was running any different than normal. After only a couple of minutes of running my boat up river I gave more throttle(probably 75% power) when it started to bog down. I immediatly kicked it out of gear and checked to see if something was caught around my prop but there was nothing there. From then on everytime I put the motor in gear and gave it throttle it would barely respond and stalled twice. Any suggestions to what this might be? Thanks, Newt.
ANSWER : The carberator is gravity fed and there is propbably gunk in it, when you give it more throttle, it needs more gas but can’t get it. Then a build up of gas in the float bowl occurs and nothing works right. It has happened to me and its aggravating, do a complete rebuild on the carb or just replace it and you will be happier quicker.

Hope this helps, Coachtheune

I have a 1997 motor guide wireless 24volt Big Water trolling motor. hooked it up to the batteries and put in a new 9volt battery in the foot pedal. the lights come on on top of the motor head and the foot pedal beeps, but the prop doesnt turn or spin (like there is no power to the bottom of the motor) any suggestions to what the problem is or how to fix it? (just bought the motor from a lady who’s husband died. dont have any manuals)
ANSWER : Hello there, as you said the power does not get to the bottom of the motor. The motor could be faulty or just completely bad. First you have to determine that the motor is good until you can determine this it is quite impossible to determine if there can be any fix. Take out the motor and try to power it on its own if it works fine then the problem is not from the motor but most likely the problem is from the motor. Let me know what your findings are. Hoping to hear from you soon.
Thank you for visiting FixYa.
