Located just atop the lower gearcase assembly, they`re easy to access and service, too. The pump houses a rubber impeller that`s keyed to the engine driveshaft. Water enters the lower gearcase through inlets on the sides of the gearcase, just above the propeller shaft area.
Explanation: The impeller is mounted on one shaft or different shaft. A multistage centrifugal pump has more than two impellers. The multistage centrifugal is similar to the centrifugal pumps working.
If you see excessive swelling, noticeable wear and/or cracks, or one or more of the impeller vanes have broken off, replace the impeller pump immediately. You also need to replace the impeller if the vanes are not making contact with the pump body. Impeller pumps work best when you run them on a regular basis.
The heart of the cooling system of your vehicle is the water pump, and as a key part among its components to carry out its function, there is the impeller.
How Often Should You Change the Water Pump On Mercury Outboard? In most cases, you won`t need to replace the water pump unless the housing is damaged. Instead, replacing the water pump impeller every three years or sooner should avoid most water-pump-related issues and keep your outboard running in excellent condition.
If your impeller fails, the water pump cannot pull in water, and your engine will overheat – and potentially leave you stranded far from shore, adrift with no power.
Impellers are attached to a shaft that is connected to a motor.
The impeller shaft rotates in ball and roller bearings and is either common to the turbine shaft or split in the center and connected by a coupling, which is usually designed for ease of detachment.
All impellers should be changed at a minimum of three years. Some will not make it that long depending on many things, how often it is used… too little and it will deform and tend to dry rot. Use it alot and it will wear out from spinning around in it`s housing.
The water pump is attached directly to the engine block and operates by centrifugal force. If the water pump isn`t working, the coolant will remain stagnant, and the engine will overheat. A modern car engine can withstand slight overheating, but severe overheating can damage it.
MerCruiser impellers should be replaced every three years.
It`s common to find pump impellers with significant surface damage. The three most common causes of surface damage are erosion, corrosion and cavitation.
Impeller failure

Erosion is caused by the suspended particles in the fluid being pumped. Impeller failure can also result from corrosion or cavitation. Corrosion is caused by chemical reactions between the pumped fluid and the metals used in pump manufacture.

A grinding or droning sound will, again, indicate a problem with the bearings in the motor, while a scraping sound could indicate the impeller is damaged or dislodged.
How to Tell if Your Impeller is Bad. If your boat overheats it could be a sign that your raw water pump isn`t working. One of the first things you should check is the impeller inside the pump. If the impeller is cracked, melted or the vanes have lost their flexibility then it`s time to replace it.
The speed and diameter of the impeller determines the head or pressure that the pump can generate. The rotational speed and height of the impeller blades determines the flow that the pump can accommodate [4, 5]. The design of the impeller diameter is critical because it affect the performance of the centrifugal pump.
Tests prove that Globe`s Run-Dry® impellers outperform standard neoprene or rubber impellers and are guaranteed to run-dry for up to 15 minutes.
How many hours do boat engines last? Well-maintained inboard engines, inboard outboard engines (unless diesel), and outboards have a serviceable, average life of about 1500 – 2000 hours. If you`re looking at a gas-fueled marine engine close to or exceeding 1000 hours, inboard or outboard, proceed with caution.
There are many methods for repairing the impeller of the water pump. There are many methods for repairing the impeller cavitation, such as ARC polymer composite material coating, powder spraying (welding), epoxy resin coating, and rubber and nylon composite material repair, etc.
Impeller Damage

As is the case for the housing of your pump, the impeller is susceptible to damage done by excessive heat during use. Dry running your pump causes friction, and this friction is strong enough to heat up the impeller, causing it to melt.

If the impeller runs backwards, the liquid is still discharged from the pump. This is due to centrifugal forces that move the fluid in the normal direction. Put simply, the flow doesn`t reverse, making reverse rotation hard to detect.
The inlet, or suction side of a pump is the point of lowest pressure in a given pump. For positive displacement pumps, the lowest pressure occurs just prior to rotor meshing; for centrifugal pumps, lowest pressure is near the eye of the impeller.
The action of the impeller increases the fluid`s velocity and pressure and also directs it towards the pump outlet.
Typically when they`re replaced or the pump housing is opened for inspection, they should be lubricated to give them a chance to suck in the water initially without abrading against the sides of the pump. Once water starts flowing through, this will lubricate them.

Mar 12, 2010 – Could it be the check valve? I took it off and the flap appears to be working correctly. This well has been here a long time. Never given me any problems. I do have galvenized couplers on the discharge and intake sides. Old. Could these be leaking even though they show no sign of water? The discharge is able to hold 30 pounds easily overnight. I do not hear any vacuum in the intake when I take it off. Could the pipe to the well have a leak? I know I would have to insert a sleeve bnut I do not want to go through the hassle if I do not have to. I had put on a brand new pump from the hardware store that did the same thing so I think that would elliminate the pump as being the problem.
Mar 12, 2010 – I have a 3/4hp flotec convertible jet pump. It is able to hold 30lbs pressure on the discharge side as the primie easily for 24 hours. It is not able to pull water from the well whcih has been here for years. i disconnected it for the winter and rehooked it up. The galvanized couplers on the discharge and pump side are old but do not appear to be leakeing as I taped them well. The check valve seems to be functioning well as I took it off and the flap works correctly. The well is not pulling watrer. there does not appear to be a vacuum on the check vale when I losen it. could the check valve be bad? I am aware I might have to resleeve the well, but do not want to hassle with this if I do not have to. I want to eliminate everything else first. i put another brand new pump on it to see if it was that. That partiuclar pump which was the same thng did not work either.

We have a 1994 HiLo FunLight camp trailer. The water pump does not come on when attempting to use the water.
The tank is full of water, the battery is fully charged, the trailer is connected to power. Any suggestions? Where is the fuse located? Where is the SureFlo Water Pump located in this trailer?
Thank you very much. Chuck Stafford
ANSWER : THi-Lo Trailer500 South Main StreetPO BOX 577Bellville, OH 44813Local: 419-886-0066This is a link that may or may not help you:. If there is a fuse or a breaker for the pump, it would more than likely be on the DC panel. The pump could be located in a variety of different places but would probably be under a sink, around or on top of water tank, or in storage under the bed, access being either by removing matteress and a panel hidden by matress or, by removing a drawer in the base of the bunks lower structure. You probably have a pressure valve in the line somewhere near your water inlet connection, you may want to check that and, the pump might be in thta area also.

I have Detroit 60 series installed on a launch. Recently the Starboard unit suffers a catastrophic failure and piston No2 came out of the block, making a big hole. This engines are using heat exchangers, and sea water cooled Charge Air Coolers and sea water self priming raw water pump. We contact the local dealer an the veredict was a “Massive salt water ingestion” that caused an Hydraulic lock and damaged cyls 6 and 2. They say that the water came from the deck covers, but there is no way for that to happen, I think they dont want to honor any warranty, because we suspect that the water came from the Charge Air Cooler. I want to know if the CAC can cause that type of failures and if anyone had a similar problem. The engine cost is about 66K and only had 2300 hours.
ANSWER : I would have to say that a sleeve got pitted or lost an oring or the CAC sprung a leak. I believe you are correct in your assumption that the water did not enter the unit in the manner they are saying. The only real way to tell is a complete tear down and someone is going to have to pay. They are also a high maintenance item and someone is going to say that the preventive maintenance was not done.

Water pump isn’t pumping the water up to the heads. Had the water pump checked and its ok.
ANSWER : Hi, maybe you should try to prime the machine before pumping it again. You probably have a faulty stop valve with cannot retain water for pumping, so you have to prime the machine with water before pumping….

I have a volvo penta md7a marine diesel engine fitted in my sailing boat. Recently, I changed the bottom sea **** which was almost blocked. Apparently the new sea **** is working well as it should. But this week with no apparent reason and without use of engine, I noticed that the cooling system water cup (the recipient which connects with the sea **** hose and the water pump hose) is empty and it Im not able to keep it full like it was before. The water vanishes every time I tried to fill it up in order to keep the water running throught the system. However the waterpump seems to be working. But almost no water is coming out of the exhaustor, of course, just a few drops once in a while. What might be going on ?? Thanks.
ANSWER : I don’t have a picture of the installation, but I can imagine a water filter above the water line with an improperly fitted cover and an air leak that lets the seawater drain out – losing the prime. Old Swampy in New Hampshire
