4 screws in total , but no real indication which ones are for draing or venting or filling, pumping
Experienced athletes share their insights in answering this question:
Howdy, John here, I have a 40hp 1995 Johnson, of the 4 screws, two are screws and two are plugs, the top one is the vent and the bottom one is drain and fill. Oil is forced in from the bottom and out the top to prevent air pockets.
After filling, install the top plug first, then remove the filling device and install the plug.

How to Identify and Resolve Common Issues ?

Most sterndrive and outboard manufacturers advise you to change the gearcase oil in your lower unit every 100 hours or once a year (whichever comes first). Clean oil is critical for protecting the heavily loaded gears in your lower unit and preventing expensive damage.
75–90 HP: System capacity is approximately 21 fl. oz. (620 ml).
SHIPMATE Hi-Viscosity 80W90 PLUS Lower Unit Gear Lube is formulated specifically for marine applications, and is ideal for modern mechanical shift outboard lower units and inboard/outboard stern drives.
To get an idea of how much oil you need; the gap between the marks on the dipstick usually represents around 1 litre of oil, so you know that if your oil mark was at the minimum, you need around a litre to top it up. If it`s only halfway down, you probably need around half a litre.
The Alpha One holds about 2 quarts of Mercruiser Premium Gear Lube.
Mercury Premium SAE 80W90 Gear Lube is recommended for lower units for outboards below 75 horsepower. Mercury Premium SAE 80W90 Gear Lube should not be mixed with Mercury High-Performance SAE 90 Gear Lube.
Generally speaking, you have about 2 weeks or 500 miles of driving before a flashing oil light turns into a legitimate problem. But once it hits that point, things can go downhill fast, leading to serious mechanical damage. So, try to get your vehicle into a mechanic sooner rather than later.
However, for the best protection, it is best to use a gear oil specifically formulated for marine lower unit applications. Marine lower units are regularly exposed to water, and water contamination of gear oil increases the likelihood of foaming, which disrupts the oil film and leads to wear.
50:1 – Mix 100ml of oil per 5ltrs of fuel.

Recommended by Mercury, Mariner, Tohatsu, Johnson and Evinrude this is my preferred ratio for all outboards including Yamaha and Suzuki. You can confidently use this ratio for any horse power and just about all year models.

The most common mistake is the belief that the viscosity of SAE 80W gear oil is much thicker than the viscosity of SAE 10W-40 motor oil. This is absolutely incorrect! A 10W-40 motor oil`s viscosity is actually similar to the viscosity of 80W gear oil, and the viscosity of SAE 10W-30 is similar to 75W gear oil.
The higher the number, the thicker the oil. First number is cold and the second number is hot. Since 140 is higher than 90 its also thicker when hot.
If the oil level is a little above the full mark, that shouldn`t cause problems. If it`s overfilled by half a quart or more, or foam shows on the dipstick, the best fix is to have the oil drained and refilled to the proper level.
When too much oil is added, the level in the oil pan becomes too high. That allows a fast-moving lobed rod called the crankshaft to come into contact with the oil and essentially aerate it. The result is a foamy, frothy substance that cannot properly lubricate the engine.
How much oil does your car take? The amount of oil car engines require is roughly between 4 and 8 litres. This differs greatly between vehicles, though generally: Four-cylinder engines need around 4.5 litres of oil.
The Alpha One holds about 2 quarts of Mercruiser Premium Gear Lube. More if you have a remote Drive Lube Reservoir.

Q: The manual states oil capacity is 4.55 qt w/o oil filter change.

My swimming pool. I have just had my fifth IC 40 Intellichlor chlorine generator installed in 4 years at a cost of over $900 today. Each one has worked for no more than 8 months. The first three were replaces under three year warranty, the fourth by a factory rep and I bought the fifth today. The first three all failed with Flow Chk PCB error message. The fourth just stopped working on Sunday, no power or lights. A local Pentair warranty person, whom I paid a Service Call, unplugged the unit, opened the small power center cover, showed me the green light indicating that there was power, plugged in a new IC 40 which worked immediately (as did the other four). I asked if I should replace the power center and he said that it’s basically just a transformer and is working fine. We do get occasional power blips that make the clocks on microwaves, etc blink, but I thought that the power center essentially isolates the cell from these. I do have a Florida Power and Light surge protector on the electrical box that brings power into the house. I have now talked to the pool builder, two Pentair warranty repairmen and one factory rep. I am at a loss. They all tell me they have no idea why these units fail after less than a year. This last IC 40 was installed 3/24/2010, version 2.0 and now failed in less than 5 months. Should I replace the power center that the IC 40 plugs into. Any other suggestions. I have been told that this is the best chlorinator. I don’t want to keep replacing units. By the way, each unit had been spotless inside. I keep the water chemicals and salt levels at ideal levels. The units have never worked long enough to get dirty inside. The power center is connected to an Intellitouch control system outside with an indoor control panel. Last time I called Pentair North Carolina and got some smart alec tech person that had no suggestions. Please Help if you can.
ANSWER : I’ve had the same experiance. On my fifth one as well. Fail every year. No idea why.

I want to change the oil in my yamaha big bear atv, early 90s. what type of oil do I need to use and is there anything else that goes along with the oil change-?filter
ANSWER : HELLO; Yes you will need a filter located lower left side behind the peg ,you’ll see a cover thats about an inch and a half wide with three allen head bolts, pull out the filter and when you replace it make sure the hole is towards the engine. Now about oil there are several ideas on this so heres my ( 2 cents ) I repair quads and have for several years, you have a quad that has a wet clutch if it is an older one and semi automatic so you don’t want to use syn. oil as this will wear out your clutch sooner, I would recomend, yamalube,it will cost up to $5.00 a qt. but you only need two and a quarter qts. to fill your quad. GOOD LUCK, and remember you must be fast, because I was haulin *** when I passed you!
