Marine-grade wire is more expensive than standard SAE automotive wire, but it`s much better suited for boats, with more copper conductor in a given gauge size, and better resistance to chafe and heat.
Wiring is not difficult, but there are some special considerations afloat. Corrosion is a major problem. That`s why we suggest you only use marine-grade tinned wire and cable. It lasts longer and provides better service in the process.
Boats usually use DC power. DC stands for Direct Current – this means that the current flows in only one direction. DC comes mainly from batteries and is a low voltage. Most equipment on small boats is designed to run on DC power.
Virtually all boats under 40 feet or so that have an electrical system operate at a nominal voltage of 12 volts. That is, they use a battery that has a fully-charged potential of 12.6 volts, and the loads and charge devices that are installed on the boat are designed to operate between roughly 12 and 14 volts.
For general boat and RV applications wiring batteries in parallel provides the simplest wiring and common voltage, however, for large applications beyond 3000 watts of power, using higher voltage series connections might be best.
How Many Volts Should a Marine Battery Have? A good healthy marine battery should register between 12.6 to 12.7 volts.
If you are using another brand of battery and don`t know what the fully-charged voltage level should be in your battery, the safe minimum level for a fully-charged 12-volt lead-acid battery should be at least 12.6 volts.
This is generally a 12-volt system, except on larger boats where you may find a 32-volt system. An important factor when using a multimeter is to make sure that you are using the correct scale depending on whether you are measuring AC or DC.
Wire used on boats typically ranges from 18 gauge for LED lights and other low-amperage accessories to 2/0 for some battery cables. Like fishing hook sizes, wire size “reverse” once they go below zero. So, in order of increasing size, gauges are 4, 2, 1, 1/0, 2/0, 3/0 and so on. “Gauge is a measure of wire thickness.
Therefore, provided you chose a controller suitable for the motor you use, you can usually run a motor 12v motor from a 24v battery with no effect except that full speed is doubled.
Look at the tag on the starter or look at how the batteries are hooked up. Have you lightly scraped any paint off of the starter`s data tag = it might say 12 V or 24 V; on it.
If the cables corrode sufficiently, it can result in issues starting your engine or just leave you dead in the water. Don`t risk it; never use automotive cables on a boat – only use marine-grade wire and cable.
Putting a car battery in a boat will cause it to degrade much more quickly. You could possibly damage it and cause dangerous chemicals to leak from the cell. Instead, you should get a marine battery designed for the intensities of the open water.
There are two types of circuit we can make, called series and parallel. The components in a circuit are joined by wires. If there are no branches then it`s a series circuit. If there are branches it`s a parallel circuit.
One of the classically misunderstood and overlooked systems on board most boats is the grounding/bonding system, which is fairly easy to identify: In virtually all cases, it`s insulated copper wire with a covering that`s green or green with a yellow stripe.
The conclusion was, on average, the boat will use about 5000 watt. hrs of energy per day – this is excluding air conditioning. This makes the math really easy – the 3,500 Lithium-Ion battery above fully charged would provide 3500/5000 = 70% of the daily requirement.
Cranking Batteries

In order to get the burst of power needed to start an engine, a cranking battery needs to deliver a large current for a short amount of time–often 75-400 amps for anywhere between 5 and 15 seconds, depending on the boat`s engine.

12.6V volts or above – Your battery is healthy and fully charged. No further action is required. 12.5 volts – Your battery is at a healthy state of charge, but we`d recommend re-checking it within a few days to ensure the voltage hasn`t dropped any further.
A fully charged 12 volt battery should read at 12.6 volts on the multimeter. If the reading is lower than this, you`ll want to charge your battery with either a battery charger or by taking your car for a drive.
Q: Are 12V And 24V strip lights compatible? A: No, 12V strips can get excessively hot within a few seconds of being connected to a 24V power supply unit. Simply put, connecting 24V to the 12V LED strip copper pads could cause the LEDs to burn out due to over-voltage.
It might seem like the obvious answer is yes, but unfortunately, it`s not advised. 24-volt batteries typically have twice as many cells as 12-volt batteries, meaning that you will need at least two 12 volt batteries to power your car instead of one 12 volt battery.
24V systems are beneficial because you can use smaller diameter wire and reduce amperage by two times. Using smaller diameter wire can reduce wiring costs and decrease the space needed to run wiring. This is especially important where long wire runs are required.
Commonly, it is used in RV boats and other vehicle and automobile systems. To know the number of watts in 12 violet batteries can be done through a simple formula. For example, if you are using a battery with a 300 amp capacity, then multiply 300 by 12 volts. You will get 3,600 watts from a 12 volt battery.

Trying to install a new fluro light, pull out old light to find 3 reds and 3 blacks 1 copper earth. What do I do to connect it up the right way??? When I pulled the old Fluro light out the 3 Reds were joined together with a connector ,two blacks were joined to one end of light wire, the other to the other end of the light wire,earth wire to the light case,the third black wire was connected to the wire from the ballast? Does this all make sense
ANSWER : No, this does not make sense but I have seen strange wiring before. There is power going from the light someplace else. Just connect it back up exactly as the old light was connected. It worked before so it will work again. If it works it is wired correctly. Without being there to check which wire was the hot wire and which was neutral it is impossible for me to say what is what. Make sure you connect the ground wire to the light chassis.

2005 Mercury 50hp 2-stroke outboard motor very sluggish when accelerating, stalled twice when trying to exceed 50% throttle capacity. Last time I used my boat was about two months ago, so I don’t think bad fuel is the problem. I let my boat idle at the boat launch for probably 5 mins before taking off. I didn’t notice any weird sounds or any indication that my motor was running any different than normal. After only a couple of minutes of running my boat up river I gave more throttle(probably 75% power) when it started to bog down. I immediatly kicked it out of gear and checked to see if something was caught around my prop but there was nothing there. From then on everytime I put the motor in gear and gave it throttle it would barely respond and stalled twice. Any suggestions to what this might be? Thanks, Newt.
ANSWER : The carberator is gravity fed and there is propbably gunk in it, when you give it more throttle, it needs more gas but can’t get it. Then a build up of gas in the float bowl occurs and nothing works right. It has happened to me and its aggravating, do a complete rebuild on the carb or just replace it and you will be happier quicker.
