Expert Reply: I contacted Superwinch for their thoughts on installing a Superwinch LT2000 ATV Winch such a long distance from the battery and they suggest using 6 gauge wire.

The winch solenoid diagram step should be the first to map the terminals. Then, to bypass a solenoid switch, you connect a jumper cable to the three posts, A, F1 and F2, by interchanging them and connecting them to the power source, which is your battery.
To determine what gauge wire you need, consider the carrying capacity and the amount of current the wire needs to conduct (measured in amperage or amps). Wire gauge is directly related to how many amps you need to run through it. The distance you need the wire to go can also impact the gauge of wire you need.
Since winches can vary on how much they can pull this also affects how much power they need. For a winch that is rated up to 4K it is recommended to use 6 Gauge Wire like what comes in the Bulldog Kit # BDW20304.
The amperage your winch draws depends on the amount of load placed on it and how long it`s in use. With no load (just spooling in and out) a typical 9,000-pound winch will draw 60-70 amps. It will draw about 250 amps under a 4,000-pound pull, and nearly 480 amps at 9,000 pounds.
Be sure to connect the electrical cables directly to the main posts on your battery. Winches can pull tremendous amounts of power when working under load. Connecting to secondary posts might not be able to handle the amperage causing them to burn out and leave you with a dead battery in the middle of nowhere.
Wire Gauge: 6 AWG.
It`s all based on your GVWR, or Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. This can typically be found on a stamped metal plate in the driver`s side door frame. You can also often find it in your owner`s manual. The weight rating for your winch can be 1.3 to 1.5 times your vehicle`s GVWR.
In most cases, the positive wire will be red and the negative wire will be black. Once the wires have been identified, they can be connected to the power source. The positive wire should be connected to the positive terminal, and the negative wire should be connected to the negative terminal.
The winch solenoid is used to activate the winch motor on a vehicle-mounted winch. It is designed to supply the required current without damaging the winch motor or the winch switch. It is activated when current from the battery is directed to the solenoid by pressing the switch of activation.
Applying some math, this means you`d need a wire that can handle at least 37.5 amps, or a #8 AWG wire. This is the same for a 110/120 V, 220 V, or 240 V circuit. The NEC requirement is in place to prevent heat build-up and a breaker trip when turning on appliances.

The basics – What`s required:

A 12-volt battery rated up to 650 CCA will typically be enough for a 12,000 lb. vehicle which is the general standard for winches. However, always consult with your winch manual to check the recommended battery rating and size as requirements can vary.

A: The general rule for choosing a winch is to get one rated at 1.5 times the gross weight of the vehicle. Gross weight is the total weight of the vehicle plus the driver, fuel, and any gear or tools that will be carried.
Winch Enough for an ATV? The average weight of a midsize four wheeler is about 520 pounds, with the heavier utility models erring closer to the 700 or 800-pound mark. Based on the 1.5x rule of thumb we mentioned earlier, a 2500 lb. winch would be more than enough for the average ATV.
The industry standard to work out what winch you want for safe and effective recovery is to multiply the total vehicle weight by 1.5. Then convert that number to LBS. To do this, multiply the mass value by 2.205.
They have a high breaking strength and are usually sold in length of 15 meters (50 feet).
Circuit breakers are essential in any anchoring system. The primary functions are to protect the winch motor from overload, batteries from voltage drop, and in a worst case scenario prevent fire on your boat!
ATVs and quads usually require 12v batteries that are often suitable for use in motorcycles as well. A power sports battery needs to provide the high output needed to start your four-wheeler. What differentiates these batteries is cold cranking amp, or CCA, output.
Your battery or your ATV owner`s manual should tell you the ideal voltage. Most batteries need somewhere between 12.6 and 12.8V. Some need more. No battery is running well with less than 12.6V.
The WARN EVO line is a favorite: 90% of the reviews rated this winch at five stars. With the highest waterproof rating on this list at IP68, this winch is available in three different sizes and either steel or synthetic cable.
Winch sizes

Your winch should be able to pull at least 1.5 times the weight of your vehicle. You can calculate it by taking the gross vehicle weight and multiply it by 1.5. This is the minimum rating, but certain factors can make your winch capacity be exceeded.

In 1997, Warn opened its state-of-the-art world headquarters in Clackamas, Oregon, a 200,000 sq./ft. manufacturing and distribution facility. This helped it to become the dominant winch manufacturer in the ATV market segment and the number one supplier of wheel-end disconnect technology to OEM customers.

Trying to install a new fluro light, pull out old light to find 3 reds and 3 blacks 1 copper earth. What do I do to connect it up the right way??? When I pulled the old Fluro light out the 3 Reds were joined together with a connector ,two blacks were joined to one end of light wire, the other to the other end of the light wire, earth wire to the light case, the third black wire was connected to the wire from the ballast? Does this all make sense
ANSWER : No, this does not make sense but I have seen strange wiring before. There is power going from the light someplace else. Just connect it back up exactly as the old light was connected. It worked before so it will work again. If it works it is wired correctly. Without being there to check which wire was the hot wire and which was neutral it is impossible for me to say what is what. Make sure you connect the ground wire to the light chassis.

Spark plug wire boot grounding out on coil, 96 outback 2.5 automatic, just put new spark plug wires, new spark plugs, and new coil on. ran great for two weeks, now spark is jumping out of boot at coil on one wire, put old coil back on and still does it in the same spot. replaced wires again, and still does it in the same spot. seems to do it only under a load. Is my new spark plug on that cylinder bad? Does the coil need some insulation under it? It is the coil that sits right on top of the motor. Any ideas? thanks.
ANSWER : Sparks are high voltage, and will always follow the path of least resistance. If you can visibly see a spark (whether in a lighted area, or in the dark), that means either that a plug wire (or coil wire) is open (non conductive), or your have a carbon track on the surface where the spark can be seen, but most likely you have BOTH problems!

If you have an ohmmeter, check the resistance of each wire involved, particularly spark plug wires … which means you must be able to connect to both ends of each wire at the same, and hopefully, FLEX those wires, to be sure they don’t have a break inside that is intermittent (comes and goes)!
