Backboard Size
For kids, 32-inch backboards provide a great foundation for learning the game. 44-inch backboards are excellent for young players learning to shoot. Young teens practicing drives to the basket and a wide range of bank shots will benefit from the rebound space of a 48-52″ backboards.
Also take into account the size of the backboard. These can range from 44″ up to 72″, which is the regulation size at the professional level. The smaller-sized backboards, typically between 44″ and 54″, save on space and are good for a standard two-car driveway.
The 72” is the size used in high school, college and professional courts. 60” – The 60” is the most common size for a home court installation. This will hold up for competitive players, as well as recreational players or families looking to add to their outdoor activities.
Lifetime portable basketball bases are designed to be filled with either sand or water, and each one has pros and cons. Sand is about 45% denser than water, which increases the system`s stability making it more difficult to tip the system.
While concrete offers a satisfying basketball bounce, the surface has very little give and can be harsh on players` legs and ankles. Concrete surfaces also pose an increased risk for concussion. Asphalt can tear up basketball shoes, skin and the basketball itself.
Many people choose to install their basketball hoop at the edge of a driveway, as it is a convenient, ready-made court. This can work well as concrete provides an adequate playing surface.
A larger backboard offers more shot opportunities and the arena-style performance of 72” backboards found on college and professional-level courts. However, don`t forget: the bigger the backboard, the more expensive the hoop.
Backboard sizes vary in width from 48” wide all the way up to 72”, but for the sake of regular game play we recommend choosing backboard no smaller than 54” wide. Anything narrower than this measurement won`t allow the player to perform bank shots at all!
