The starter drive clutch is a one way roller clutch and a key component in a starter motor that is used to crank internal combustion engines.

Where is the clutch located? Explanation: The clutch is in the middle of transmission and engine. So that torque can be transmitted from engine to the transmission whenever required.
You don`t want to hold the clutch pedal part way when changing gears at highway speeds. Once you`re moving in gear, even 1st gear, you need to take your foot off the clutch pedal. However, to smoothly take the vehicle from a standstill to movement in first gear, you have to partially engage the clutch.
A sprag clutch goes by many names: One-way bearing, freewheel clutch, cam clutch, overrunning clutch. Whatever you call it, sprag clutches are a critical mechanical device in many heavy industrial applications—from automatic transmissions to torque converters, industrial winches to helicopter rotors.
Replacing a clutch is a major job. Your mechanic will need to remove your car`s drive shaft and transmission. This being the case, it makes sense to take any steps you can to save money.
The purpose of the starter clutch is to allow the starter to crank the engine in the forward direction. Yet, when the engine fires and accelerates to idle speed, it doesn`t try to drive back through the drivetrain and spin the starter at a zillion rpm. Instead, it releases.
“Riding” the clutch is the most common reason for premature clutch failure. Even the slightest pressure on the pedal will partially disengage the clutch, causing the release bearing, pressure plate and flywheel to overheat.
Luckily, clutch failure is usually a slow process, showing signs over a long period rather than one day leaving you stranded without warning; however, clutch problems left unchecked will result in just that.
The clutch switch is normally located underneath the dash, and prevents you from starting the vehicle to start while it is in gear. The clutch switch is attached to the pedal linkage and is activated by the clutch pedal arm when the clutch is pushed down.
At low speeds: First clutch then brake

The speed that you can achieve without the use of the accelerator is the lowest speed of the gear. This is usually done in bumper to bumper traffic as your speed is usually less than the lowest speed of the 1st gear.

Ideally, you want your car to ride as smoothly as possible. Releasing the clutch too early will make your vehicle jerk while putting excessive pressure on the engine and transmission. This overheats the clutch, which can do serious damage over time. This is a common problem with learner and novice drivers.
Explanation: Holding the clutch down or staying in neutral for too long will cause your vehicle to freewheel. This is known as `coasting` and it`s dangerous, because it reduces your control of the vehicle.
In most cases we ask there to be 1000km of normal stop start driving, prior to any full power / high load type use.
The primary clutch, or “drive clutch,” is the forward mechanism of a CVT attached to your engine`s output shaft. It consists of two tapered plates or “sheaves” on a self contained shaft. One sheave is mobile and one stable, with an end of the drive belt looped between.
There are two basic types of one-way clutches available: TCM uses metal springs as the clutch element, and the TCX series, which uses plastic springs as the clutch element. Primary applications are paper-feeding mechanisms in automated office equipment such as photocopiers, printers and facsimile machines.
The average lifespan of a clutch is anywhere between 20,000 to 150,000 miles. Luckily, your clutch will likely give you ample notice that something is going wrong. Don`t get left at the side of the road with a vehicle that won`t shift into gear.
Sudden and gradual failure

Sudden failure is most often caused by a broken or loose clutch cable, linkable or a failed hydraulic master/slave cylinder. There can also be leaks in the hydraulic line or even the disc could be contaminated with something like dirt or debris.

When a new clutch kit is installed the flywheel must be either replaced or machined. This is because excessive heat from normal driving changes the structure of your flywheel surface which creates less friction affecting the performance of your clutch.
When performing a clutch replacement, it is best practice to replace the clutch disc, pressure plate, pilot bearing and throw out bearing. The flywheel is also resurfaced or replaced if it is beyond the service limit or if it is a dual mass flywheel (this type of flywheel is not machinable).
Generally, replacing a clutch can take anywhere between 2 to 6 hours. If you book in for the job, we recommend you should put a whole day aside just in case.
A common problem for new drivers is they find it hard to change gear quickly and smoothly, not doing so not only makes for a bumpy ride – but can damage your clutch and gearbox.

I have a TX500, never been used (just out of the box) and had to get an electrician to my home for this problem. It will start rolling but quits in a few seconds. The electrician believes that it is a problem in the sensor that rides at the belt. There is only one sensor in the pulley; he thinks that perhaps there should be two as there is a hole placement opposite the one that is in there. When the belt quits, it goes to a number 3 on the board which he thinks is the sensor as well. If he is correct, where do we get another magnet to place there? If he is not correct, please offer help. We did not get a owners manual in the box and surely could use one; where can we get one? Please help…thankyou

I’ve noticed the starter drive gear does not stay engaged On the E-Drive starter with the flywheel if the engine does not start as in the older Prestolite style starters. Why?
ANSWER : The old Prestolite and Delco-Remey starters had the Bendix gear engage by being “thrown” foward with a twist to engage the ring gear on the engine. To disengage the Bendix gear from the engine ring gear the engine needed to turn faster than the starter to disengage. The newer style gets trown in with starter engagement and is made so it disengages when power to the starter is removed.

I own an 1992 Yamaha Phazer II PZ 480. I have done a bunch of work trying to get this hunk o stuff going. I have good spark and compression from the motor. I rebuilt both carbs and both clutches it starts and runs fine but when I try to move it just boggs down- no power? Where should l look next to get this thing moving again? I work at a Marina that used to service sno-mobiles so I have the tools to get it done. Could you maybe send me an assembly diagram of where to look and what to do next? Thanks

Have a john deere 318 riding lawn mower. it had been hard to start with it taking several turns of the key to do anything, then would not always engage. once engaged, would start with no problem. now when the key is turned, does nothing. checked 2 fuses near battery and tried jumping but no change. suspect starter and or solenoid. john deer shop claims starter price is $505 with almost 4 hrs labor too. is there good way to test to see if starter, solenoid, condenser, switch, etc is problem? what is the easiest way to access and remove the staqrter and solenoid? is there a relatively cheap equivalent to this starter and solenoid?
ANSWER : Usually the shop would make the fixing of an item to look so complicated this is usually to ensure that the customer comes back. To confirm if the starter is the cause of the machine not starting. tell the shop to check the machine if either of the 2 options are the cause of the problem as they will have setup procedures for doing this. Do not settle for cheaper equivalent as this will only cause further damage to the unit. It is rather concrete that starting problems are caused by the starter.Hope this has been helpful?
