t below the cover and above the oil drain. I recently noticed that there was a black oil residue (soot) below the rectangular opening and on the cowling at the join to the lower unit. Is this an exhaust outlet and is this soot built up normal? Thank’s in advance for your response.

The opening you see is a vent for crankcase gases. Any deposits at this point simply means your motor has A:been working hard, (too much full throttle) or B: is a bit long in the tooth. Keep the opening clear(don’t allow it to become blocked) and ease off on the throttle somewhat. Once you notice oil dripping is when you may consider rebuilding ie change piston and rings and rebore. You will notice the exhaust on the stem becoming blocked with oily carbon before this point is reachedYou will notice oily deposits throughout the motor but as long as you still have reasonable performance you need not worry.

How Long Does a Yamaha Motor Last? Due to Yamaha`s design and engineering excellence, their outboards typically last for 1,500 and up to 3,500 hours before needing a major overhaul or being replaced.
Yamaha recommends changing your engine oil every 50 – 100 hours of operation. And if your Yamaha outboard is brand new, Yamaha recommends changing the oil after the initial 20 hours of operation.
Under the cowl on the powerhead there will be a sticker a bit under 1 inch square with the year of manufacturer on it.
If used everyday/very often and do regular maintenance…. 10,000 hours.
The exact same boat rigged with the F150 turns just 3500 rpm to get up to 27 mph, while it cruises at 37 mph at 4500 rpm, and gets 4.4 mpg at this speed. At WOT, the boat hits 48.1 mph and gets 3.1 mpg. What do these numbers tell us? For starters, the F150 obviously provides one heck of a lot more speed.
For example, a 150-horse engine will use about 15 gallons per hour. Though these figures represent averages and can vary from 10 to 20 percent, they`ll put you in the ballpark so you can plan a long-distance cruise without fear of running out of gas.
The DOHC 2.7-liter block is a time-tested, proven design. Four valves per cylinder, not two, for better breathing and smooth performance.
With proper care and maintenance, many 4-stroke outboard engines can last over 3,000 hours before requiring significant repairs or replacement. Some premium models, such as those from Yamaha and Honda, can even reach over 4,000 hours if maintained meticulously.
Let the engine run for 5 to 10 minutes to get a good flush. After you`re finished, turn off the engine, turn off the water, remove the engine muffs and remove the tape from the pick up.
The best way and the way in which a dealer will identify `production year` is by entering the serial number into the Yamaha system and cross check the details with the model code. Remember this is `production year` not year model compliance by warranty registration.
If you are having a problem with your registration or ownership transfer, or if you would like verification of warranty coverage, please contact the Yamaha Outboard Customer Support line at (866) 894-1626.
If the serial number begins with a “T”, the piano was manufactured in Thomaston, Georgia. If the serial number begins with a “U”, the piano was manufactured in South Haven, Michigan. If the serial number begins with an “H”, the piano was manufactured in Hangzhou, China.
Well-maintained inboard engines, inboard outboard engines (unless diesel), and outboards have a serviceable, average life of about 1500 – 2000 hours. If you`re looking at a gas-fueled marine engine close to or exceeding 1000 hours, inboard or outboard, proceed with caution.
Much like high performance cars, some boat engines are not designed to last forever. If a boat is 10-15 years old, 200-300 hours is most likely not enough. You would want to see that number closer to 500 or more for a boat of that age.
Yamaha. The Yamaha F150 is the world`s best-selling 150hp four-stroke outboard engine, and it continues to dominate the sales charts. The original F150 made its debut in 2003, but new iterations of this iconic engine have followed and there are now a couple of slightly different models to choose from.
Yamaha 150 HP Outboard Weight
The Yamaha VF150 engine weighs 218 kg (480 lbs) and is available in two shaft sizes: 20″ and 25″. While the 20″ shaft model weighs the same at 218 kg (480 lbs), the 25″ shaft model is slightly heavier at 220 kg (489 lbs).
I usually burn 21 to 22 gallons of fuel running out to the ranch and back and that us about a 66 to 68 mile round trip. 3 to 4 Miles per gallon is about what your gonna get. I have had two 150 four strokes and both have burned about equally enough. Besides, you probably don`t have but 20 hours or so on your motor.
All in all, normal values should look something like this: Small cars. The ideal horsepower here is around 100-150. Small vehicles are difficult to construct, so don`t expect to get an especially speedy car.
If regular maintenance has been done on the motor throughout its life, then 500 hours may not be considered excessive. However, if there has been little or no maintenance done on the motor over its lifetime, then 500 hours could indicate that it`s time to replace it with a new one.
The Yamaha F150 motor is powerful but also strong, light, quiet, and environmentally responsive. The motor has outstanding performance, with four valves per cylinder to maximize its combustion efficiency. It also has great acceleration. Its 10mm offset crankshaft permits more intake volume.
Yamaha: 75,000 – 100,000 miles. Triumph: more than 100,000 miles. Ducati: 80,000 – 100,000 miles. Suzuki: 70,000 – 100,000 miles.
The maintenance schedule for most four-stroke outboards calls for an oil and oil filter change every 100 hours, or annually.
A full flushing of the motors must be done after every use, and it`s recommended every six weeks if it`s been sitting in storage. It`s important to run the motors long enough for the thermostat to open, allowing the fresh water to flush the salt from the entire powerhead.

The Bike Technicians Tactic Phase1 An electrical inspection on the bike should produce results. First, the bike battery powers the entire lightening systems mentionable as ignition, meter readings, head lamps, signal indicators. However, the battery provides the power supply to several entities though also significant is the fuse box containing circuit protection coils. Inserting the bike key into the ignition to perform start mode displays the capacity power circuits. A charged battery should display an indication in the meter reading area also known as bike dashboard grading. A malfunctioning start mode on inserting key in ignition may be traceable several locations on the electrical circuits. Attempting to repair the electrical power of the bike usually requires batter power power test kit. The test kit ascertains the battery power making possible progress to the remaining electrical circuits. Test kit also ascertains the fuse box circuit functionality either with fuses still intact or extracted allowing for the next progress level. An observation tour of the bikes electrical wiring kits from battery hold through fuse box compartments to each lightening display area either headlamps, indicators, and meter reading should produce results of any visible damages that may require repairs after the electrical inspection has been performed. Once any faults were observed on the electrical channels, repair mode is the next level. A dull battery either may have been depleted completely of durational capacity requiring another for replacement. Alternately, a depleted power supply due to prolonged storage may require charge functionalities. Usually, a device capacapble of restoring a battery of electrolytes is resorted for charger ability. The type of battery may require constuents either liquid cathode replenishment in the battery entrapment area prior to charging feature is assumed with electrolyte machine. Once the battery has regained full functionality makes way the next repair task. The fuse box may have simply required replacement fuses either as missing or burnt out. A fuse box usually contains additional spare for replacement functionalities. An alternate arrangement at acquiring fuses on the auto mart may replace the burnt devices. The next electrical task is wiring fixtures achievable by mending broken cords with appropriate electrician’s tapes else malfunctions may remain. Alternately, a worn-out electrical wire is replaceable by acquiring the entire extension lengthwise between significant areas. The last remaining electrical units are lightening indicators consisting of bulbs or luminescent displays reflectors. Observe the blub areas either by loosening covers to inspect for observable burnouts else the entire electrical circuitry is ready for functionality observations with separate entities. Engine Technicians Tactic PHASE 2 A bike engine inspection includes observation for indications of malfunction. Any fluid residue is indication of problem areas. Where oil leaks usually requires engine block inspections. A bike engine consists of an entrapment compartment where mechanical combustion takes place. First, the entire observable block consists of an external coating known as engine bloc housing internal component of pistons, rings, and fastens known as cylinder heads. A bike engine has every component embedded within requiring technical expertise to achieve an inspection. Once deciding on the engine task requirements, acquire a tool box with the appropriate componements as first requirement before engine works is commence able. Second, the bike may require an area environment as workshop requirement to attain engine inspections. Third, bike engine are least bulky compared with vehicle engines however assistance would complement the inspection phase. Prior to inspecting the bike engine, a strap mechanism has to be assumed to achieve expert maneuverability also as safe precaution. Unless parts hinder maneuverability at engine locations, the only removable components should be the engine. First, start with disjointing the spark plug cables to acquire accessibility to plugs imbedded on the cylinder heads. The plugs require tools to loosen thereby exposing the combustible area. Once the spark plugs are exposed, two alternatives are likely. First, a spark plug may have gathered rust residue only requiring cleaning to attain regular capacity. The pin area of the spark plug may have been twisted due to overheating and slight melting dislocation. Usually cleaning the residue from old plugs may simply expose the ignitable capacities. However, an observation of twisted plug pin may require twisting back in place to achieve full ignitability once bike engine starts. A bike engine bloc has the pistons as combustibles or blasters of fuel gasoline. The rings perform as strap fasteners whenever the pistons move about combustibility. Usually, the engine entrapment components would have collected residue requiring clearing. Also, pistons together with rings may require replacements either as worn-out due to prolongs tasks or overexerted biker features.
