For Mercury outboards, the serial number label is located on the transom bracket. You can locate the MerCruiser serial number label on either the side of the engine or on top of the flame arrester cover. We don`t just make the best marine products in the world.
Answer: Every Mercury outboard has a serial number label located on the transom bracket area of the engine. The latest serial number labels display a 2-digit number in a box at the lower right portion of the label. These digits coincide with the last two digits of the year in which the outboard was manufactured.
The HIN is the Hull Identification Number assigned to the boat. Each HIN is unique to that boat, and is the same as the VIN on a motor vehicle.
Each product from Mercury is programmed with an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) Code. This code distinguishes the OEM partner who originally purchased the equipment and can be used to control which devices are allowed to come online.
The actual year is found in the model number, not the serial number. For example, 150TXL78 is a 150hp engine from 1978. 65ESLR72 would be from 1972.
The serial number can help determine the engine model and also help determine the correct service parts and changes based on serial number breaks. Engine Serial Number Rule (7 digits) Starting June 1, 2012 the engine serial number will have 7 digits (currently 6 digits) and will be completely unique.
A car`s ECU, or engine control unit, should actually never have to be reset. It may, however, help with such issues as a stubborn check engine light or restoring your car to factory settings.
How much does an engine rebuild cost? Depending on the type of engine, it can cost between $1,500 and $2,000 to repair one. The price of a four-cylinder engine ranges from $500 to $2,000. A V-6 engine can cost up to $2,000, while a V-8 or V-10 engine can cost more than $4,500.
Rebuilding an engine may not be hard work, but it is precise work. Every part that goes into your engine has to be mated squarely with the others. The clearances will be less than a few thousandths of an inch, so there isn`t much room for sloppiness or shortcuts.
Mercury Marine is a marine engine division of Brunswick Corporation headquartered in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. The main product line is outboard engines. It also produces the MerCruiser line of sterndrives and inboard engines. Some manufacturing is in Fond du Lac, while 40-60 HP engines are made in China.
The model number will be 11-12 characters long and can be found in one of many locations, including: by the starter, on the cylinder shield, on the metal shield, on the valve cover, above the spark plug, in front of the engine, above the muffler, or on the fuel tank.
The Hull Identification Number (HIN) – also known as Boatcode – is a series of letters and numbers. The HIN identifies things like country, manufacturer, serial number and date of manufacture. The HIN is normally permanently attached to the vessel`s hull.
If one were to put a larger than rated motor on the boat there would be pressure and stresses applied that may be over the acceptable range for the boat and serious damage could occur.
Original equipment manufacturer (OEM) stands for companies that do the bulk production, while original design manufacturer (ODM) stands for the company that designed the product.
All OEM manufacture parts with their own specific serial numbers or holograms which can be used to trace it back to the original manufacturer. Some OEM serial numbers might be printed straight on the box or on the spare part itself while a fake would have the numbers on a sticker.
Find it in the lower corner of your windshield on the driver`s side. Your VIN number is your vehicle identification number and you can find your engine size by VIN number. In the series of numbers and letters, the tenth from the left denotes the model year and the eighth is the engine codes.
Although there is no specific international or universal standard for engine numbers, they typically range from 11 to 17 digits and often have a code that will be unique to each manufacturer. This enables each manufacturer to identify each individual engine and when it was manufactured.
Fortunately, it`s fairly simple to find your boat`s build date. (See “HINs By The Numbers” below) The information with the boat`s model year is contained in the hull identification number (HIN), which is a label permanently affixed to the boat. The number includes a date assigned by the builder.
Finding the Engine Size for a Vehicle You Currently Own

You can find your vehicle`s engine size on your Window Sticker. It will be listed under “Vehicle Description” at the top of the window sticker.

Vehicle identification numbers can reveal many things about automobiles, including their airbag type, country of origin, engine size, model year, vehicle type, trim level and plant name.
The easiest way to check your engine size is to consult your owner`s manual – it should be listed in several places, including `Specifications` or `Mechanical Information`. Alternatively, your car`s VIN (located on the driver`s side of the dashboard) contains the relevant information.
Every boat owner is different and how far you decide to push your marine engine is in your hands. However, running your boat at Wide-Open Throttle is not bad for your engine and can even help clear out carbon build up.
Lowering prop pitch will increase acceleration and thrust. Increasing prop pitch will make the boat go faster (provided the engine has enough power to keep the RPMs in the optimum operating range.
The sweet spot

Once planing speed is reached, trim the engine up slightly until you can feel it lock in, almost humming with machine happiness. It`s definitely a feel thing, but there are defined parameters in which to work. For most boats, an engine`s most efficient running speed falls between 25-30mph.

I have a 2004 60 hp yamaha 2 stroke outboard engine that doesn’t start or run well. Once warm and in the water it will idle in nuetral and also in gear. It accelerates in neutral but will die or lack power if I increase throttle while in gear. Engine will somtimes get to top speed but often while running at top speed engine will start to slow rapidly. Engine has full range of operationout when out of the water where there is no load on engine but is still difficult to cold start. Before these recent problems the engine sat up for several months and I had to change the impeller and spark plugs. Spark plugs fire, cylinders have proper pressure of 100, 100, and 110. I cleaned some fuel lines and filters and got new gas.
ANSWER : Every sympton you are describing here can be attributed to fuel starvation due to blocked jets and or water in carbs, when your engine dies does it die with dry plugs, or wet oily ones?

Need the wire diagram to rewire my Ariens lawnmover to bypass the safety switch. It is Ariens GT-19 model # 931026 Serial # 001463.
Can you help? It is an old Ariens mower but still runs good but now I need to bypass the safety switch in order to run it any longer. The local Ariens dealer said I need to go through the internet and get the wire diagram as they cannot give it to me directly. They told me I needed the wire diagram and the part involved in bypassing the safety switch. Hope this is all the information you need to help me.

Thank you. Roger Fielitz

ANSWER : Here is owner manual:http://apache.ariens.com/manuals/030305C.pdfusually the switch is behind the ignition, sometimes at the N position of gearshift, just look for a switch with one wire coming in & one going out (usually the same color); disconnect the two wires & jumper them together to bypass the switch. Looks like yours has one under the seat.
