Winchester First Model 1873

For beginners, the easiest way to identify a First Model 1873 are the guides for the dust cover. On the first models, the guides are located on top of the receiver on either side of the ejection port, with the dust cover sliding under them.

Winchester “One of One Hundred” Model 1873

Winchester manufactured a total of eight “One of One Hundred” Model 1873 rifles, only six of which are reportedly known to collectors. The company announced the Model 1873 “One of One Hundred” in 1875, and they were all shipped between April 1876 and April 1878.

Most individual manufacturers habitually put serial numbers on the weapons they produce. Such numbers can be used to ascertain the name of the manufacture, place and date of manufacture. At least for some manufacturers, a serial number can unlock myriad details about the weapon.
The Model 1873 was one of the most successful Winchester rifles of its day, with Winchester marketing it as “The Gun That Won the West”. Still an icon in the modern day, it was manufactured between 1873 and 1923.
With over 7.5 million examples built, the Winchester Model 1894 is among the most famous and popular hunting rifles of all time. Designed by John M. Browning, the Winchester 1894 was the first commercial American repeating rifle built to be used with smokeless powder from 1895.
The Model 1890 proved to be the most successful repeating rimfire rifle for general all-around shooting ever made by Winchester. Approximately 849,000 Model 1890 rifles were produced between 1890 and 1932, after which the Model 1890 was replaced by the Winchester Model 62 rifle.
Originally produced as a tougher, stronger and more improved version of the Winchester 1893, itself an improvement on the early Spencer pump gun, the 1897 was identical to its forerunner, except that the receiver was thicker and allowed for use of smokeless powder shells, which were not common at the time.
The original Winchester company made 1,007,608 Model 1892 rifles.
The longevity and special features is one big reason Winchester firearms have high valuation above other manufacturers to this day. Lot 1025: Exceptional Winchester Model 1866 Saddle Ring Carbine.
The Easiest Way to Identify a Gun Model Type

Long guns tend to have that information stamped directly on the barrel. Pick up a rifle or shotgun and you`ll see it, usually where the barrel meets the rest of the gun. Sometimes it`s on the right side, sometimes on the left.

Model numbers or names are often stamped or engraved on the barrel or slide, often along with the Make. In some cases, the Model will also be represented as a prefix or other portion of the pistol`s serial number, or may be stamped on the frame in less obvious locations (e.g., under the grip panels).
Originally priced at $50 in 1873, these rifles could be purchased for $19.50 by the end of the century. Winchester also offered a special Model 1873 sporting rifle featuring fancy checkered wood and a pistol grip stock at a price of $35.50.
Not visible to the naked eye, the frame for the 1873 was made much stronger than that of the Winchester 1866; allowing this antique gun to take advantage of the recent advances in cartridge technology and fire more powerful rounds. Once the switch to steel was made, the rifles were also lighter and cheaper to produce.
The standard barrel length for a Winchester Model 1873 rifle was 24″. Winchester did offer special order barrel lengths all the way out to 36″. This Winchester 1873 has been fitted with just such a 36″ barrel.
Winchester Model 70

The Model 70 is without a doubt one of the most famous bolt-action rifles in history having developed a loyal following among American sportsmen during the peak of the rifle`s production.

5501, which protected improvements to the Henry Rifle. The new technology included a spring-closed loading port on the right-hand side of the frame, directly at the rear of the magazine tube, and resulted in the first reliable lever-action repeating rifle, produced as the first Winchester, Model 1866.
This Winchester 1873 rifle 38 caliber was considered the “Magnum” of the Wild West era as it reached velocities in excess of 1,000 feet per second. This Winchester `73 rifle features an octagon barrel with all standard features as verified by factory letter (included).
History. The Winchester Model 1906 was designed as a more inexpensive companion to the popular Model 1890, the main differences being the 1906`s flat shotgun-style butt plate and rounded barrel, as opposed to the 1890s crescent butt plate and octagon barrel.
The Winchester Model 1890 was an American slide action . 22 caliber rifle designed by John and Matthew Browning in 1890 and produced by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company from 1890 to 1932.
Winchester offered the new Model 1897 in barrel lengths of 20, 26, 28, 30 and 32 inches in practically all the choke options, from full to cylinder. The Model 1897 was a great seller for Winchester: During its 60-year production span, 1,025,000 guns were sold.
Winchesters after 1906

Most Winchester records for firearms manufactured after 1906 to the end of the surviving records only contain dates of manufacture. These date-of-manufacture records are called Serial Number Application (SNA) records.

All Winchester over and unders in recent years have been made in our partner factory in Belgium with additional assembly work done in our factory in Portugal.
Model 1892 Rifles and Carbines

These lever-action rifles and carbines make up the core family of the Model 1892s currently being produced by Winchester Repeating Arms.

The following is Wisner’s rendition & info on the subject.
The difference in the old firing pin and the new one is as follows. The old replaced
style, was totally lathe tuned (round). While the new recall style is similar in lathe
turning on the front and back, but in the front midsection it has two flats milled, one
on each side. This makes the center section stronger. Also replaced is the bolt sleeve
lock pin (firing pin guide) which was made to accommodate this different shaped firing
pin
Part number for the new parts are, firing pin =1391ND, bolt sleeve locking pin =1491ND
The word was at the time this recall was in process was that if the firing pin would
break at the mid section and still remain in the gun as two pieces, the possibility of a
premature discharge before the bolt was locked was possible. This apparently was caused
by the firing pin tip (now not having a retracting spring) to be stuck forward, and
thereby slam-firing upon chambering.
The responsibility for the recall apparently was on Olin, as they were the parent company
at time of manufacture. Olin set up regional recall centers at three established US
gunshops. There was a manufacturing delay in the replacement firing pins, and a backlog
occurred, also some collectors did not like the idea of shipping their guns long
distances. Olin then also authorized other gunshops to make the required alterations.
Upon completion of the recall, the shops were to test fire the firearm and to stamp an
assigned letter on the inside top of the receiver as seen thru the magazine well with the
bolt retracted. The letter “B” represented Bolsa Gunsmithing, “L” was Lefever, and “N”
was for Nu-line Guns. The letter “X” apparently was for all the other independent shops.
However this identification information did not get communicated to some of the smaller
shops at the start of the project. The only way to tell if the gun as been modified, if
the ”letter” is not present, is to take the barrel & action out of the stock, remove the
trigger guard assembly and the try to rotate the firing pin by twisting it. If it does
NOT rotate, then the firing pin recall HAS been performed.

This is the izh 513m .177 rifle. It’s brand new. I am not sure as of what to do and the hammer want budge and the trigger won’t pull. The barrel has no tension and it won’t go up like its supposed to.
ANSWER : This could be a factory safety that the hammer and trigger do not move while in the cocked position. The barrel may be locking down purposely. Look near the spring or in the path of the barrel where it folds back up and look for a release button. What do you see?

I have a Winchester Model 190 with serial number B1302781. This model and serial nubmer does not show up on the Windhester site. Can you tell me when this rifle was manufactured?
ANSWER : The model 290 came out first, in 1965. The 190 came out in 1967. The 290 was made until 1973 and production of the 190 ended in 1980. There were approx. 2,150,000 model 190/290 made through the years.Since yours was made before the middle of the production run, and before 1973, I would guess late 60’s to around 1970 or 1971.

Hope this helps.
