Experienced athletes share their insights in answering this question:
If it is the model I am thinking of, I did a slight bit of back ground on this, it is a Winchester 1897 Pigeon. If it is, then it will be stamped “Pigeon” on the breech and have a picture of a pigeon stamped on the frame, behind the trigger. If it is a Pigeon then it would have been produced sometime between 1897 and 1939.

The Winchester Model 1897 was in production from 1897 until 1957. It was in this time frame that the “modern” hammerless designs became common, like the Winchester Model 1912 and the Remington 870. The Model 1897 was superseded by the Winchester Model 1912.
An internal hammer shotgun with an external tubular magazine, Winchester produced the Model 12 from 1912 to 1964, a 51-year production life. Nearly two million shotguns were manufactured during that period in various grades, barrel lengths, and chamberings. A special production occurred in 2006 with limited numbers.
The Model 12 is a pump action twelve-gauge shotgun, iconic in that it has the classic features that make a pump-gun so appealing. And it may not be the first, but it certainly trained generations how to shoot airborne game among many other things.
Model 1866.

The reintroduction of the Model 1866 lever action spearheaded our celebration of the 150th anniversary of Winchester Repeating Arms. It is the iconic Winchester and it is beautiful in every way. Manufacturing takes place at our facility in Japan.

The Winchester Model 1897 was a shotgun that was used by the United States during World War I and World War II, as well as later wars.
History. Most individual manufacturers habitually put serial numbers on the weapons they produce. Such numbers can be used to ascertain the name of the manufacture, place and date of manufacture. At least for some manufacturers, a serial number can unlock myriad details about the weapon.
From August 1912 until first discontinued by Winchester in May 1964, nearly two million Model 12 shotguns were produced in various grades and barrel lengths.
The Winchester 1897 was one of these modern weapons and it deservedly earned its name in the trenches. It was a very effective weapon if the soldier wielding it managed to navigate across no man`s land into the German trench. One of the reasons it was very effective was because of its rate of fire.
There were only 132 One of One Thousand rifles produced in the Winchester 1873 Model, and a scant eight of the Model 1873 One of One Hundreds– only six of which are known today.
With a back-bored design, the Winchester SXP Field 12 Gauge Pump-Action Shotgun`s vent-rib barrel measures 26 inches long. The shotgun boasts a 4+1 capacity and is equipped with a walnut stock.
A 12-gauge shotgun, nominally 18.5 mm (0.73 in), can range from a tight 18 mm (0.71 in) to an extreme overbore of 20 mm (0.79 in).
In fact, two of the most famous Winchester model firearms in history, are the Model 12 shotgun and the Model 70 bolt-action rifle.
The reintroduction of the Model 94 Winchester, produced at the Miroku factory in Japan.
The Winchester Model 1894 rifle (also known as the Winchester 94 or Model 94) is a lever-action repeating rifle that became one of the most famous and popular hunting rifles of all time.
The 16-gauge guns had a standard barrel length of 71 cm (28 in), while 12-gauge guns were furnished with 76 cm (30 in) length barrels. However barrels as long as 91 cm (36 in) could be ordered.
ATF has noted cases where some licensed importers have adopted the same serial number for more than one firearm. These instances of duplication have generally occurred when firearms are received from more than one source.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) requires serial numbers on guns. The serial number includes information related to the date and location of the weapon`s manufacturing.
Serial numbers, first required by the federal Gun Control Act of 1968, are intended to prevent illegal gun sales and make it easier to solve crimes by allowing individual guns to be traced.
The AR-10 is a derivative of the civilian AR-15 rifle, which is functionally identical to the M4A1 — minus the ability to fire fully automatic. The AR-10 is slightly larger and heavier than the AR-15 and is chambered for the 7.62-millimeter round. The Army`s version would be capable of fully automatic fire.
By 1932, John Garand, a Springfield Armory engineer, developed a new rifle that would be adopted as the M1. The M1 rifle went into production in 1936, with an increase in military spending as political turmoil grew throughout the world.
The Benelli M4 is the proven king of combat shotguns. This gas-operated, semi-auto shotgun was evaluated by the Marine Corps in 1999 and joined the ranks shortly after. The fast-firing design makes follow-up shots quick and effective, making it a terrifyingly effective close-quarter`s weapon.
The Winchester Super X3, billed as “The World`s Fastest Shotgun,” uses Winchester`s Active Valve to allocate the exact amount of gas to drive the action, allowing the gun to shoot light target loads up to 3½-inch magnums.
The new technology included a spring-closed loading port on the right-hand side of the frame, directly at the rear of the magazine tube, and resulted in the first reliable lever-action repeating rifle, produced as the first Winchester, Model 1866. Manufacturing of the Model 1866 started in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
A standard Winchester carbine is valued at a few hundred dollars at most, but these unique carbines that have a much-shorter than usual 15-inch barrel are worth a couple of thousand at least. For instance, this early 20th century model 1892 trapper recently sold for $7,475 at auction.

I have a Winchester Mod 1893 12 Ga shotgun that i inherited from my grandfather that was his father’s. I’m trying to figure out the manufacturing date of it. The serial number is A186XX. Is there any way I can figure out which day and month it was manufacture?
ANSWER : You may have to a little Google search, but at one time Winchester had a site where you could check the manufacture dates. If that fails, take it to a reputable gun dealer or gunsmith. I suspect the gunsmith may be the better of the two.
