How to Identify and Resolve Common Issues ?

Use Briggs & Stratton SAE 30W Oil above 40°F (4°C) for all of our engines. Check oil level regularly. Air-cooled engines burn about an ounce of oil per cylinder, per hour.
Engines on most outdoor power equipment operate well with 5W30 Synthetic oil. For equipment operated in hot temperatures, Vanguard 15W50 Synthetic oil provides the best protection.
Oil capacity is typically 15oz or 18oz*. Check oil level during the season and add when necessary. Change engine oil every 50 hours or annually, whichever comes first.
10W30 is a common motor oil grade suitable for many lawn mowers. Your owner`s manual will tell you the exact grade required, but in almost all cases 10W30 is the right stuff for a four-stroke engines. Any brand of oil that`s suitable for cars or trucks will work fine in your mower.
Briggs and Stratton® engine oil is the only warranty certified engine oil recommended by Briggs and Stratton®. Briggs & Stratton® 10W-30 4-Stroke Engine Oil meets API SJ specification and approved for all weather use in all VANGUARD, INTEK, DOV professional series and other OHV 4-Stroke engines.
There`s not much difference between 10W-30 and 10W-40 motor oil. What sets them apart has more to do with temperature fluctuations and engine load. For moderate weather, either engine oil grades should work fine.
Using a 40 weight engine oil instead of 30 weight isn`t going to hurt the engine. It may, however, it may affect your oil consumption. 5w-40 could be a big jump in viscosity. You want an oil that is thin enough so that the oil doesn`t cost you power yet thick enough to protect your engine.
Can I Use 5W-30 Instead Of SAE 30? Both oils have a “30” hot viscosity rating. This means SAE 5W-30 oil has the same flow rate as SAE 30 at operating temp. So, technically it`s fine to use SAE 5W-30 oil in place of SAE 30.
Don`t overfill the crankcase when adding oil. Too much oil can damage the engine. Briggs & Stratton offers oil specially formulated for your mower and other equipment.
While automotive engine oil, such as 10W-30 or 10W-40, can be used in a lawn mower engine, it is generally recommended that SAE 30 motor oil be used.
Other variations require an oil capacity of 20 oz to 24 oz. The oil should be changed every 50 hours of operation or annually. Riding mowers, on the other hand, have an oil capacity of 48 oz to 64 oz. The oil should be changed every 100 hours of operation or annually.
SAE 30 is the most common type of oil for small engines and is best suited for work under warmer temperatures. SAE 10W-30 has a much wider temperature range than SAE 30 and can improve cold-weather starting, though that may lead to a greater consumption of oil.

A 4 stroke engine needs to circulate oil throughout to lubricate these moving parts, whereas a 2 stroke engine only needs to lubricate the components internal of the combustion chamber, which is achieved by mixing the correct oil to fuel ratio.
This oil weight is commonly used in diesel engines or in a smaller motorcycle engine too. The 10W-40 oil viscosity also often serves as an alternative for older engines with burning or oil leaking issues. Why is that? The 10W-40 engine oil has a thicker viscosity than, say, 10W-30 oil when the car engine is hot.
Higher viscosity oil such as a 10W-40 can be useful for older engines burning or leaking oil. We offer Mobil™ 10W-40 high viscosity motor oils for use in vehicles with more than 75,000 miles, and a synthetic blend oil when cost is a consideration.
5w40 is better for starting your engine at low temperatures as it flows more easily at these temperatures. When the engine is running and hot, 5w40 and 10w40 have high viscosities and are equally effective in protecting against engine wear.
You can use 10w30 instead of 5w30 oil since both meet the SAE standard for viscosity at operating temperatures. Generally, the viscosity difference between the two is neglectable. However, it`s important to note that a 10w30 oil will move slower than a 5w30 oil in cold environments.
In practice, this means that each oil is just as viscous at lower temperatures and will remain viscous at -30°C, however 5w40 oil outperforms 5w30 oils at higher temperatures, being effective up to ambient temperatures of 50°C, as opposed to 30°C.
Can You Mix 5W30 with 5W40 oil? This is a common question that many people have. The answer is yes, you can mix 5w30 engine oil with 5w40 engine oil as long as the weight of the 5w30 engine oil is greater than the weight of the 5w40 engine oil.
5w30 can be used by different type of vehicles and in different range of temperatures, but is ideal for colder temperatures. 5w40 is often used in higher mileage engine sand performs better in warmer temperatures.
Car oil is similar to lawn mower oil, and you can use it in lawn mowers with four-stroke engines. However, car oil has a high concentration of additives and can damage smaller engines. It`s also important to match base oils; otherwise, you risk damaging your lawn mower`s motor.
The main differences between SAE 30 and 5W30 are that the SAE 30 is a single-grade type, that can be used for small engines, and would generate in warm weather. On the other hand, 5W30 is a multiple-grade type, that can be used for larger engines, tolerating extreme weather.
One of the biggest advantages of using 10W30 oils is that they can sometimes be used in place of SAE 30. While it is not recommended, doing so will not cause damage to the engine. This is due to the multi-grade oil properties that make this particular oil flexible enough to use in various temperature conditions.

Does the John Deere series 100 lawn tractor have some sort of safety feature that shuts the engine off if it gets dangerously low on oil? I was cutting grass this morning and the engine sputtered and quit. I got off the tractor and noticed that the oil drain line plug was open and dripping oil. Have I ruined my engine or can I refill it with oil and continue on?
ANSWER : Not sure on this specific mower, but oil is usually there to lubricate and keep the temp down. When theres none in it, it gets hot and melts the pistons. Sounds bad to me

I have a 2004 60 hp yamaha 2 stroke outboard engine that doesn’t start or run well. Once warm and in the water it will idle in nuetral and also in gear. It accelerates in neutral but will die or lack power if I increase throttle while in gear. Engine will somtimes get to top speed but often while running at top speed engine will start to slow rapidly. Engine has full range of operationout when out of the water where there is no load on engine but is still difficult to cold start. Before these recent problems the engine sat up for several months and I had to change the impeller and spark plugs. Spark plugs fire, cylinders have proper pressure of 100, 100, and 110. I cleaned some fuel lines and filters and got new gas.
ANSWER : Every sympton you are describing here can be attributed to fuel starvation due to blocked jets and or water in carbs, when your engine dies does it die with dry plugs, or wet oily ones?

I have a 1995 Kawasaki TS.All the oil from the tank is filling the bottom of the hull. I think it is coming from the punp on the front of the engine. It is so tight ,I cant even get my hand in the in to feel for oil. How do I repair it. Do I have to pull the engine, and if so is this hard to do? Can I just stop putting oil in the tank and run pre mix.If so what mix should I use? Thanks for any help.Jim.
ANSWER : No, you cannot just run premix, you still need oil for your gears and lower end of your cams and such!

LX 188. Engine suddenly dies. The fluel in the bowel of the fuel filter is empty. If I crank the engine the filter becomes dry and is collapsing some but the engine does not start. When I remove the supply line from the fuel pump to the carberator and crank the enginge there is a strong stream of gas being pumped out. I tap on the carberator ??? is the float is hung not allowing fuel to enter. Cranking the engine with the line off refills the bowel of the gas filter. Reattache line to the carberator===engine starts. Ran perfect for 20minutes then suddenly died. Repeated all the above and engine again started. What to do to fix this? Thanks
ANSWER : Debrie inside the needle and seat area which has to be cleaned out with carburetor cleaner and compressed air

My swimming pool. I have just had my fifth IC 40 Intellichlor chlorine generator installed in 4 years at a cost of over $900 today. Each one has worked for no more than 8 months. The first three were replaces under three year warranty, the fourth by a factory rep and I bought the fifth today. The first three all failed with Flow Chk PCB error message. The fourth just stopped working on Sunday, no power or lights. A local Pentair warranty person, whom I paid a Service Call, unplugged the unit, opened the small power center cover, showed me the green light indicating that there was power, plugged in a new IC 40 which worked immediately (as did the other four). I asked if I should replace the power center and he said that it’s basically just a transformer and is working fine. We do get occasional power blips that make the clocks on microwaves, etc blink, but I thought that the power center essentially isolates the cell from these. I do have a Florida Power and Light surge protector on the electrical box that brings power into the house. I have now talked to the pool builder, two Pentair warranty repairmen and one factory rep. I am at a loss. They all tell me they have no idea why these units fail after less than a year. This last IC 40 was installed 3/24/2010, version 2.0 and now failed in less than 5 months. Should I replace the power center that the IC 40 plugs into. Any other suggestions. I have been told that this is the best chlorinator. I don’t want to keep replacing units. By the way, each unit had been spotless inside. I keep the water chemicals and salt levels at ideal levels. The units have never worked long enough to get dirty inside. The power center is connected to an Intellitouch control system outside with an indoor control panel. Last time I called Pentair North Carolina and got some smart alec tech person that had no suggestions. Please Help if you can.

ANSWER : Not a pro with rhinos but sounds like you got oil from crank case. like if you have a seal broken, hope not but my car had same problem and I had a cracked gasket. good luck. you can check the oil to see if it looks milky
