If your lawn mower battery won`t hold a charge, verify connections are clean and tight first, then connect it to the charger. If it isn`t fully charged within 8 hours, your battery is dead and you`ll need to replace it. If your lawn mower battery does charge fully, the charge should not drain if it is not in use.
Loose, Dirty or Disconnected Spark Plug in Your Lawn Mower: Check it out, clean off debris, re-connect and tighten. Dirty Air Filter: Clean or replace. Fuel Not Reaching the Engine: Tap the side of the carburetor to help the flow of gas. If this doesn`t work, you might need a new fuel filter.
The battery charges using magnets that are placed on the flywheel. When the engine is running and flywheel is spinning, the magnets create current that is sent to the battery to store.

The most common engines are Kawasaki and Kohler. The average life expectancy of one of these commercial grade engines is usually 3,500 hours with oil change intervals of 50 hours. Typically at 2,800 you can start to notice a lack in power, usually do to low compression.
Riding mowers use a 12 volt electrical system. The battery should have 12.6 volts when fully charged and in good condition.
Set it for 12 volts, which is the standard in the industry. Most lawn and garden devices have this voltage rating as a way to keep consumers safe from any shock.
Voltage that is too high can cause premature failure of electrical and electronic components (e.g. circuit boards) due to overheating. The damage caused by overheating is cumulative and irreversible.
Without some sort of regulator, the pressure would be so high as to cause serious problems to household plumbing and appliances. Any pressure exceeding 80 psi – pounds per square inch – can damage such appliances as water heaters, commodes, faucets, and/or dishwashers.
Static Stator Test
To test for AC voltage connect one lead of the multimeter to one of the stator leads, and the other lead to the ground. With the engine running at idle, you should see around 50-100 volts AC on the multimeter. If not, then the stator needs to be replaced.
When a stator fails, it is largely due to the degradation or aging of its insulation through external occurrences and materials being introduced into its system.
A full gas tank and oil reservoir are the essential first steps when checking why the lawn mower won`t stay running, but the problem could also be a dirty filter, clogged carburetor, improper fuel mixture, or a dirty spark plug.
If you pull the cord and hear your engine turn over, but your mower is not starting, the most common reasons for this are low fuel, a broken gas valve, or a bad choke fault. A broker spark plug could also be the culprit. You may also have to change the fuel pump if it does not get fuel to the ignition system.
Where is the voltage regulator? On most vehicles, the voltage regulator is either located inside of the alternator or mounted to it. But vintage vehicles often have an external voltage regulator, which may be mounted to the fender well, firewall, etc.
Check a Lawn Mower Battery With a Multimeter
These batteries are direct current (DC), so set the multimeter to read DC.
If your battery is: Reading 0 volts, chances are the battery experienced a short circuit. Cannot reach higher than 10.5 volts when being charged, then the battery has a dead cell. Fully charged (according to the battery charger) but the voltage is 12.4 or less, the battery is sulfated.
