DEAD OR DISCONNECTED BATTERY

If your starter engages, but the engine cranks very slowly, your boat battery may be low. If the engine does not turn over at all, the battery may be dead. Check the voltage of your batteries with a voltmeter and charge the batteries to about 12.6 volts for a full charge.

Make sure the engine is primed with fuel and choked properly at start if necessary. Improperly connected spark plug wires can make starting your engine difficult. Make certain all spark plug wires are properly connected and free of breaks. Also, check that the distributor cap and rotor are functioning properly.
It may sound obvious, but the fuel level is easy to check, and it`s one of the most common explanations for a motor that won`t start. Additionally, double-check that the fuel shutoff valve is set to “on” – otherwise gas won`t reach the motor, no matter how full your tank is.
The most likely cause of the engine going into gear without any spinning from the prop is a `spun prop`. This happens when the hub inside the propeller fails, causing the propeller shaft to spin without engaging the prop.
If your vehicle won`t start, it`s usually caused by a dying or dead battery, loose or corroded connection cables, a bad alternator or an issue with the starter. It can be hard to determine if you`re dealing with a battery or an alternator problem.
A difficult start could be due to a number of things, from a dying battery to a faulty starter. But if your vehicle has a hard time starting after sitting for just a few hours, it can cause an extra layer of confusion. When this happens, one of the most common causes is low fuel pressure.
Most outboards will not crank if the boat is in gear. If the engine won`t crank but other lights and gauges work correctly, check that the gear shift is in neutral.
If your boat`s steering is unusually stiff, you should first check to make sure there`s adequate grease on the motor. Grease is necessary to keep the components moving and functioning as they are intended. Without this lubrication, the steering wheel may be difficult to turn.
Loose fuel line connections, pinched or blocked fuel lines. It would be best to inspect all fuel lines for any bad connections, damage to the line, and leakage issues. Replacing a damaged fuel line is typically the best course, as repairing a damaged line naturally leads to further problems within a short period.
Use a circuit tester to see if the current is getting to the solenoid. Place one lead of the circuit tester (test lamp) to the feed terminal of the solenoid. Attach the other lead to bare bodywork metal. If the tester lights up, then the problem is with the solenoid or the starter itself, not the current getting to it.
With a cranking system, symptoms are divided into one of three possible troubleshooting categories: Click — No-Crank (solenoid clicks but starter doesn`t crank) No-Click — No-Crank (solenoid doesn`t click/starter doesn`t crank) Slow Crank (starter cranks, but engine RPM slow to start vehicle)
The cause of this problem is usually one of 3 things – a failed starter motor, a bad connection between the battery and starter motor, or a blown fuse (if present) in line between the starter and the battery.
Oil may become thick and slow

When trying to start a cold engine, the engine has to try and push around the cold slow oil. This type of oil makes it difficult for the engine to spin and start. It is important to get the oil changed on a regular basis to keep fresh, clean, new oil available to the engine.

If the heat riser is stuck in the closed position it will cause excessive heat under the carburetor and boil the fuel causing flooding and hard starting when the engine is hot.
The main reason for your outboard engine not working will be the fuel system, often because fuel has been left in the engine over winter. The fuel goes through a chemical reaction producing ethanol, which will prevent the engine from running. There may also be dirt blocking the filter, lines or carburettor.
Common signs include reduced engine performance, black smoke coming from the exhaust, backfiring, overheating, or hard starting.
While a 2-stroke will never offer the torque of a 4-stroke, they come close enough for most weekend riders. Not only that, but they`re lighter and tend to be easier to handle, which makes them great for beginners. In addition, 2-stroke bikes require less maintenance than most 4-strokes, saving you time and money.
Maybe your 2 stroke dirt bike starts easy when the engine is cold, but it`s hard to start when it`s hot after riding for a while. This is also likely due to poor jetting. A “band-aid” fix that will help is to hold the throttle wide open when you kick start it.
50:1 – Mix 100ml of oil per 5ltrs of fuel.

Recommended by Mercury, Mariner, Tohatsu, Johnson and Evinrude this is my preferred ratio for all outboards including Yamaha and Suzuki. You can confidently use this ratio for any horse power and just about all year models.

Begin by pushing the choke to on and then turn the ignition switch. Next, bring the throttle to neutral then gradually to full and open. Pull the choke off, turn the ignition, and then crank the engine. Pull the throttle back to neutral and repeat the cycle until the engine is drained.

My 50cc mini bike starts then dies 5 secs after starting. why?

I have a 2001 Yamaha XL700Z Waverunner. The compression on both cylinders is about 120, it starts and runs fine – dry. Won’t quite idle, but I can start it and rev it up fine (for a short period, of course). However, as soon as it gets in the water, it will barely run – it will start and sputter and you cannot get it to run more than a few seconds or rev up. Take it back out, let it dry, starts & revs fine. It is not getting any water in the casing that I can tell, its almost as if water is getting something wet through the cooling system that I cannot see?

LX 188. Engine suddenly dies. The fluel in the bowel of the fuel filter is empty. If I crank the engine the filter becomes dry and is collapsing some but the engine does not start. When I remove the supply line from the fuel pump to the carberator and crank the enginge there is a strong stream of gas being pumped out. I tap on the carberator ??? is the float is hung not allowing fuel to enter. Cranking the engine with the line off refills the bowel of the gas filter. Reattache line to the carberator===engine starts. Ran perfect for 20minutes then suddenly died. Repeated all the above and engine again started. What to do to fix this? Thanks
ANSWER : Debrie inside the needle and seat area which has to be cleaned out with carburetor cleaner and compressed air

I have a problem with my machine, on occasion, not recognizing when I’m starting, and the display will not start. I have to remove one of the batteries or it will stay on forever. When it starts up, it works fine, no complaints whatsoever. But lately, I’ve not been able to use it due to the start-up problem. I put the batteries in, the display comes on, but it will not start up when I begin motion. The control buttons will not work, either. Please inform me what it is I can do to fix this problem. I have a 2004 60 hp yamaha 2 stroke outboard engine that doesn’t start or run well. Once warm and in the water it will idle in nuetral and also in gear. It accelerates in neutral but will die or lack power if I increase throttle while in gear. Engine will somtimes get to top speed but often while running at top speed engine will start to slow rapidly. Engine has full range of operationout when out of the water where there is no load on engine but is still difficult to cold start. Before these recent problems the engine sat up for several months and I had to change the impeller and spark plugs. Spark plugs fire, cylinders have proper pressure of 100, 100, and 110. I cleaned some fuel lines and filters and got new gas.
ANSWER : Every sympton you are describing here can be attributed to fuel starvation due to blocked jets and or water in carbs, when your engine dies does it die with dry plugs, or wet oily ones?

I have a TX500, never been used (just out of the box) and had to get an electrician to my home for this problem. It will start rolling but quits in a few seconds. The electrician believes that it is a problem in the sensor that rides at the belt. There is only one sensor in the pulley; he thinks that perhaps there should be two as there is a hole placement opposite the one that is in there. When the belt quits, it goes to a number 3 on the board which he thinks is the sensor as well. If he is correct, where do we get another magnet to place there? If he is not correct, please offer help. We did not get a owners manual in the box and surely could use one; where can we get one? Please help…thankyou
