How to Identify and Resolve Common Issues ?

We offer a diverse range of insights on identifying and resolving common problems in sports. Our sources encompass academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays shared by seasoned athletes. :

A: This spark plug should have a gap set to 0.02 inches.
The Spark-Plug Gap

If the gap is too small, the spark will likely be too weak and cause the engine to run poorly or with poor efficiency.

Many think the larger the gap, the better. However, if the gap is too large, and the ignition system can`t provide the voltage needed to spark across the gap, or turbulence in the combustion chamber blows out the spark, misfires will occur.
For most racing applications, you usually want the plug gap to be between 0.020 and 0.040 of an inch. Most engine builders seem to settle around 0.035 of an inch. Factors such as the type of ignition you run, cylinder heads, fuel and even timing can affect how much gap will work best for you.
The gap setting is different for each vehicle but most are somewhere between 0.028″ and . 060″. Consult the owner`s manual or Champion ® catalog to find the recommended setting for the vehicle you`re working on.
Proper Gap is Important

015 in. The recommended gap varies widely for light-duty engines due to variables, although most gasoline engines start out with the plugs set anywhere from . 035 to. 045 in. or higher.

A smaller gap will yield a short, intense spark and will usually make the engine real responsive. A wide gap creates a longer spark arc but without sufficient “juice” from your ignition system, (including amps), it can be weak and yellow in color.
While you can gap spark plugs with household items in some situations, most technicians and car mechanics strongly recommend using a spark plug gapping tool. When gapping spark plugs, your mechanic will use industry-approved tools (a gapper) that do not damage the spark plugs (mainly the center electrode).
Every boat owner is different and how far you decide to push your marine engine is in your hands. However, running your boat at Wide-Open Throttle is not bad for your engine and can even help clear out carbon build up.
While most NGK spark plugs are pre-gapped, there are occasions when the gap requires adjustment. Care must be taken to avoid bending or breaking off the fine-wire electrodes. NGK recommends a round wire-style or pin gauge gap tool to measure the gap.
As the spark plugs wear, the spark plug gaps widen, also weakening MPG. This is because the wider the spark plug gap, the more voltage is required to arch between the electrodes. The smoother the combustion process, the lower the demand for engine power and the lower the demand for fuel.
NGK builds two types of iridium spark plugs: OE Iridium and Iridium IX®. Every plug in the Laser Series was designed for an OEM application. All dual precious metal plugs are designed to provide maximum longevity.
While spark plugs don`t technically increase your engine`s horsepower, they bring it back to its optimal combustion level. In simple words, your car will run as if it`s new with optimum acceleration control and improved fuel economy!
Should you decide to re-gap your Iridium Power plug, use extreme caution as improper gapping may damage or destroy the Iridium center electrode or porcelain center.
Spark plug gaps for car engines are typically 0.6 to 1.8 mm (0.024 to 0.071 in). Modern engines (using solid-state ignition systems and electronic fuel injection) typically use larger gaps than older engines that use breaker point distributors and carburetors.
The discharge voltage rises in proportion to the spark plug gap. The spark plug gap widens bit by bit as the electrode wears, so high discharge voltage becomes necessary and misfire occurs more easily.
These plugs are pre-gapped at . 044″.
Tighten the spark plug finger-tight until the gasket reaches the cylinder head, then tighten about ½ – ⅔ turn more with a spark plug wrench.
Every time a spark plug creates an arc of electricity, it very minimally shortens the electrodes. Over time, the gap between the electrodes grows larger. As this gap increases, more electricity is needed to spark ignition of the air/fuel mixture.
At the top of the list, we have the NGK Spark Plugs. With iridium as its core material, this spark plug pack can operate at a much wider heat range as compared to ordinary spark plugs made out of platinum or copper.
With varying spark plug gaps and lengths, it`s important to buy the right ones when it`s time to replace yours. Spark plugs that are too long can protrude into the cylinder and cause piston damage. Meanwhile, spark plugs that are too short will struggle to ignite and often cause engine misfiring.
Ratchet wrench

This common tool is available in assorted drive sizes and configurations (short, standard, long-handled and flex-head). For removing spark plugs, a longer-handle, flex-head ratchet is the way to go, but a standard ratchet will also work. Ratchets with 72 teeth work better in confined spaces.

A regular socket can easily handle a basic spark plug replacement. But you`ll need the right socket size with swivel handles to reach the spark plugs without damaging the wires during changing. A universal joint socket may also do the job.
When a boat is over-propped (the propellers have too much pitch), the outboard(s) highest achievable RPM is lower than the manufacturer`s recommended wide-open-throttle RPM, which typically is between 5000 and 6000 RPM.

Turned poulan pro 42 inch 18.5 HP Briggs and Stratton mower off after 1hr of use to move a board I was about to mow over. Tried to restart it but it just backfires. Removed spark plug and it looked fouled. Cleaned it up but when looking at spark it is orange in color. Bought new spark plug and now get white spark. Installed new spark plug and it still backfires. Plug is wet with gas. Any suggestions?
ANSWER : Check the valve clearances and especially the inlet valve to make sure that it is not riding (staying slightly open) B&S are notorious for valve problems as most of their motors do not have a valve adjustment on them, the valves stems have to be filed/ground down to get a clearance. Somewhere between 0.010 to 0.015″ is near enough for the inlets and about 0.005″ more for the exhaust. It is not critical.

Spark plug wire boot grounding out on coil, 96 outback 2.5 automatic, just put new spark plug wires, new spark plugs, and new coil on. ran great for two weeks, now spark is jumping out of boot at coil on one wire, put old coil back on and still does it in the same spot. replaced wires again, and still does it in the same spot. seems to do it only under a load. Is my new spark plug on that cylinder bad? Does the coil need some insulation under it? It is the coil that sits right on top of the motor. Any ideas? thanks.
ANSWER : Sparks are high voltage, and will always follow the path of least resistance. If you can visibly see a spark (whether in a lighted area, or in the dark), that means either that a plug wire (or coil wire) is open (non conductive), or your have a carbon track on the surface where the spark can be seen, but most likely you have BOTH problems!

If you have an ohmmeter, check the resistance of each wire involved, particularly spark plug wires … which means you must be able to connect to both ends of each wire at the same, and hopefully, FLEX those wires, to be sure they don’t have a break inside that is intermittent (comes and goes)!

I,ve got a Kawasaki super sport xi (jh 750-b) it hasnt been started ffor a couple of years so its my job to get it going so i’ve cleaned out the water jet (cause it had some big stones in) got some new spark plugs and tried kicking it over, there NO SPARK now. And also i could turn the propeller and it wasnt turning the engine, is that true. My friend said it had sucked up a stone and snapped somekind of bolt is this true. If its the coil packed buggered thats why there no spark where can i get another…. Many thanks carlie
ANSWER : Two problems if there is no spark it could be several things, the prop not spining is normal if you sucked up rocks, it’s design to do that to save the motor. It’s a rubber spacer. I’m parting out my 750 xi ss. Let me know if you need parts [email protected]

1985 40 hp Johnson outboard wouldnt open up and
ANSWER : Sounds like your mix is off and it’s fowling the plugs. probably too rich. make sure the level in your carb bowls isn’t too high. Really sounds like you should clean and bench set your carbs. Especially if a plug change helps but doesn’t last, then it’s got to be your fuel mix, or maybe timing.

I have a 1997 Coleman 107 Hot Tub. While filling the tub it over flowed and the circuit breaker popped. Over the years I’ve done this a couple of times. I remove the side, let things dry for a day or so and everything is fine. This time, I reset the breaker and the spa went on. The pumps work fine, and the control panel shows the temp and the indicator light shows the heater is on. However, work never heats up. The local spa repair folks are crooks and they know less than I do, and I know NOTHING. Nonetheless, I’m going to try and fix the problem myself. Now, I need to know the best way to determine if the problem is the circuit board or the heater itself. I also need to know where I can get a repair maual. I’m tired of paying Goober and Gomer hundreds of dollars.
ANSWER : Check the terminals that lead into the heating element to ensure voltage is present (110 AC) if voltage is present upon start up the heating element must be replaced if no voltage is present is is most likely a control board issue. Go to this web site for contact info and possible repair manual aquisition.

I have a 2004 60 hp yamaha 2 stroke outboard engine that doesn’t start or run well. Once warm and in the water it will idle in nuetral and also in gear. It accelerates in neutral but will die or lack power if I increase throttle while in gear. Engine will somtimes get to top speed but often while running at top speed engine will start to slow rapidly. Engine has full range of operationout when out of the water where there is no load on engine but is still difficult to cold start. Before these recent problems the engine sat up for several months and I had to change the impeller and spark plugs. Spark plugs fire, cylinders have proper pressure of 100, 100, and 110. I cleaned some fuel lines and filters and got new gas.
ANSWER : Every sympton you are describing here can be attributed to fuel starvation due to blocked jets and or water in carbs, when your engine dies does it die with dry plugs, or wet oily ones?

A kids gas engine dirt bike. I don’t thing the
engine is over 5 horsepower. It has a pull
starter. The problem is no voltage to spark
plug. The grounding wire to turn off is not
activated so that isn’t the problem. Do the
electric pickups on the pull assembly go
bad. Everything turns ok when pulled but
no spark at plug. Thank you
ANSWER : This type of bikes don’t have a standard ignition system, they have a magneto: it works like this

http://www.jacques.lacasse.com/GardenTractor/Diagrams/Electrical/Wisc_Alt_Start_MotGen01.gifSo the only 2 things that would cause it to malfunction is a shorted coil or an interrupted wire somewhere in the circuit. To find out which just take out the lead to the sparkplug and check it resistance to the ground – if it’s less than 1 kohm it’s the coil, if it’s over 10kohm it’s a wire. In that case check every single wire one at a time starting from the plug up to the stop button.
