Flooded Engine

A sled can flood if the engine is over-primed or over-choked. One way to correct this problem is to simply give it time. Let any extra fuel evaporate for about 20 minutes before restarting. You can also attempt to dry the spark plugs on your own if you don`t want to wait.

Your starting issue could be damaged gaskets or maybe worn-out piston rings, scored cylinder or piston, bad crank seal, reed valve, or a damaged head gasket. Using a compression tester or contacting a place that can service your snowmobile will be the best way to go if the problem looks too serious.
To fix a flooded engine, you basically want to get the air to fuel ratio back to its usual balance. You can first try to simply let the excess fuel evaporate. Open your hood and wait a couple minutes before you try to start your car again. And when you do start it back up, make sure you aren`t pushing on the gas pedal.
A “flooded engine” simply has too much gas in its cylinders, so the spark plugs can`t ignite the fuel-air mix. It can happen for a variety of reasons — most commonly, because you pumped the accelerator pedal too many times when your engine hadn`t been started for a while.
One of the biggest signs your snowmobile has a bad fuel pump is when you routinely lose power whether you`re climbing a hill or going at high speed. In many cases, lost power is actually a sign of another problem such as an engine issue or a pinched fuel line.
Spray it into the carburetor intake and turn the engine. It should start at least momentarily. If it shuts off after burning off the starting fluid, it means you`re not getting enough gas coming in. if this happens a few times, your carburetor probably needs to be cleaned.
Should you start your snowmobile in the summer? I`m a firm believer in running your sled in the summer. I try to start mine once a month for about 2-3 minutes. This keeps sediment deposits from clogging crucial cooling areas along with keeping those seals from drying out in your engine and fuel system.
If an engine becomes severely flooded, it may result in fouled spark plugs. A fouled spark plug is when the ends of the spark plug get wet due to an excess amount of fuel in the system. When a spark plug is wet, the electrical energy that tries to fire during starting grounds out instead of firing.
Turn the bolt in a clockwise direction to free the engine. If you cannot get the engine to turn, apply penetrating oil to the walls of each cylinder through the spark plug wells. Give the oil a couple of hours to work its way past the piston rings and try again.
You can start by installing a continuous pumpdown cycle on the unit. This will remove the majority of the refrigerant from the low-pressure side of the unit. If possible, the compressor could be installed in a controlled ambient area. A crankcase heater also can be installed.
Typically, there`s a 12:1 or 15:1 ratio of air to fuel, and when there`s too much air or not enough fuel, it causes sneezing or popping sounds in the intake.

A general rule is to keep the engine under 4,000 rpm within the first 500-1000 miles, after which you can gradually dial things up. Doing a full acceleration during the engine break-in period puts strain on the piston rings and gas cylinders, which could accelerate engine wear.
For a gradual slowdown, it requires taking your foot off the accelerator and shifting into a lower gear, then slowly releasing the clutch. It`s important to let the vehicle slow to a proper speed and shift down one gear at a time.

I have a 2001 Yamaha XL700Z Waverunner. The compression on both cylinders is about 120, it starts and runs fine – dry. Won’t quite idle, but I can start it and rev it up fine (for a short period, of course). However, as soon as it gets in the water, it will barely run – it will start and sputter and you cannot get it to run more than a few seconds or rev up. Take it back out, let it dry, starts & revs fine. ANSWER : If the motor is reaching full revs look at the jet assemby for fouling or prop damage. If it is not reaching full revs get authorised mechanic to fix it, it will be cheaper in the long run.

Spark plug wire boot grounding out on coil, 96 outback 2.5 automatic, just put new spark plug wires, new spark plugs, and new coil on. ran great for two weeks, now spark is jumping out of boot at coil on one wire, put old coil back on and still does it in the same spot. replaced wires again, and still does it in the same spot. seems to do it only under a load. Is my new spark plug on that cylinder bad? Does the coil need some insulation under it? It is the coil that sits right on top of the motor. Any ideas? thanks.
ANSWER : Sparks are high voltage, and will always follow the path of least resistance. If you can visibly see a spark (whether in a lighted area, or in the dark), that means either that a plug wire (or coil wire) is open (non conductive), or your have a carbon track on the surface where the spark can be seen, but most likely you have BOTH problems!

If you have an ohmmeter, check the resistance of each wire involved, particularly spark plug wires … which means you must be able to connect to both ends of each wire at the same, and hopefully, FLEX those wires, to be sure they don’t have a break inside that is intermittent (comes and goes)!

I have a 99 yamaha f100 four stroke outboard. Problem I have is boat will acclereate fine get up on plane and after running for about a mob at wot will decell and only run around 4500 rpm. Then after coming back to idle will have a slight miss then run smooth and repeat every run. Changed the plugs and fuel filters alll oe yamaha has fresh oil timing belt is good any ideas will help or fuel psi spec. I am an ase master automotive tech so I know alot about engs. To me it feels like it’s running out of gas. Like the carb bows are full when I take off but then runs out after running wot. Any info will help

I have a 2004 60 hp yamaha 2 stroke outboard engine that doesn’t start or run well. Once warm and in the water it will idle in nuetral and also in gear. It accelerates in neutral but will die or lack power if I increase throttle while in gear. Engine will somtimes get to top speed but often while running at top speed engine will start to slow rapidly. Engine has full range of operationout when out of the water where there is no load on engine but is still difficult to cold start. Before these recent problems the engine sat up for several months and I had to change the impeller and spark plugs. Spark plugs fire, cylinders have proper pressure of 100, 100, and 110. I cleaned some fuel lines and filters and got new gas.
ANSWER : Every sympton you are describing here can be attributed to fuel starvation due to blocked jets and or water in carbs, when your engine dies does it die with dry plugs, or wet oily ones?

HI!
I continually get code 90 (low/NO flow) from my 8111. I have disassembled, cleaned EVERYTHING, including the inlet port AT the pump (remind everybody to check this as stuff gets past the filter basket and will plug the pump inlet).

There is No air in the system and I get superb pressure at the outlet, yet I still get code 90. I again removed the flow sensor and put my ohm meter across the flow sensor terminals and activated the flapper and measured an open circuit. I used a heavier magnet to see if I could get make the internals of the sensor move to get an ohm reading, but I get nothing but an open circuit, ie: no measured resistance.

Can I simply bypass the defective flow sensor to trick the 8111 to think it has full flow without damaging the ‘brain’ of the system.?

Intex corp is useless at these questions. They have been out of stock on this sensor for months and are telling me “two weeks” for two months and now it’s “end of August” which I do not believe. Meanwhile I am making no chlorine while the 90 code is showing.

I love the 8111, this is the first problem I’ve had with it, and I’m frustrated that I can not get such an important part from them.

I have a 1987 mercury 9.9 outboard drive problems
ANSWER : The inside of the prop has a rubber between the prop itself and the inside splines to act as a shock absorber,say if you were to hit a rock. that rubber had spun out and the splines are turning inside the prop. the prop is screwed. seen it 100 times before.
