Clean the Carburettor

By keeping the carburettor clean, you ensure that the engine receives fuel at an optimal level. Thanks to that, you prevent the engine from running lean, which leads to backfires.

Too little fuel in the cylinder and an excess amount of air can cause your bike to backfire. The combustion can be suppressed if too much air is present. Again, this issue can be fixed by making sure your carburetor jets are clean.
Too Lean or Too Rich

If an engine has an overabundance of air and not enough fuel, it is said to be running too lean. Conversely, an engine that has too much fuel and not enough air is described as running too rich. Both can result in your motorcycle backfiring or popping.

A backfire when trying to start usually means that there`s too much gas in the engine and/or carb. This means that the engine is trying to ignite it but there`s too much and it just “pops” some of it away.
Lean Air/Fuel Mixture

Not only can a rich air/fuel ratio cause a backfire, a mixture that doesn`t have enough gasoline can cause a backfire, too. A “lean” mixture is one that doesn`t have enough fuel, and too much air.

One of the most common causes of a sputtering engine is an issue with the vehicle`s fuel system—the filter, pump, and injectors. These three critical components work together to ensure fuel flows smoothly from the fuel tank to your engine`s fuel injectors, and then pumps into the engine evenly.
Are Backfires Normal for A Motorcycle? Yes, to a degree. Backfires and motorcycles often go hand in hand, especially during hard slowing on compression or after you have released your hands off the throttle once speeding up. The popping sounds they emit aren`t particularly louder or noisier than regular engine noises.
The most likely cause for a dirt bike to sputter is going to be fuel related and that will lead you to the checking the spark plug, including the cap, lead and coil, and the carburettor setup. It could be blocked jets, incorrect settings, or the air screw.
The main reasons for motorcycle backfiring are too much fuel, too little fuel, loose exhaust pipe, use of aftermarket exhaust, a bad fuel pump, Airbox leak, bad fuel filter, and a dirty carburetor.
If too much fuel is added to the engine, it may not all burn up before the exhaust valves open — letting unburned gasoline into the red-hot exhaust headers, where it can combust and lead to a backfire. Too much fuel could be getting into your engine due to damaged and leaking fuel injectors or bad engine sensors.
Assuming all of your plugs and wires are in the correct locations and you haven`t messed with the timing at all, then the most common cause of backfiring through the carb (spitting or coughing) is in the morning when a carb`s air/fuel mixture is a bit too lean. This usually goes away once the engine warms-up.
On an older car with spark plug wires, wires that get crossed or installed in the wrong order can inadvertently cause a spark to fire in a cylinder when it`s not supposed to. This could cause a significant backfire.
bad coils or plugs can allow excess in burnt fuel into the exhaust which can ignite and cause back firing. Can a clogged fuel filter cause a car to stall? Sure it can. No fuel means no combustion.
Neither is ideal, but in the long run, running lean is generally worse because it can do more damage. Running lean will cause the engine to run hotter. A rich condition means that the fuel/air mixture has too much gas. If the fuel mixture is too rich, you may experience: Dull and intermittent engine noise.
Running rich only occurs if there is an issue with your engine`s combustion process. The cause of this is your engine receiving too much fuel. Conversely, “running lean” refers to your car receiving too much air and not enough fuel.
Clogged Fuel System

A sputtering engine is a sign of a lean fuel mixture in the combustion chamber. This can happen if you have a clogged somewhere in the fuel system that impedes the delivery of fuel into the chamber.

If your car hesitates or sputters at a low RPM, you could be dealing with an issue with your engine`s air filter or there could be an issue with your fuel filter, injector, or pump. The best thing you can do is take your car to a mechanic so they can properly diagnose the issue and repair it.
If your engine is getting more fuel than it needs, a rich fuel to air ratio is the result. When your car has leftover fuel in the exhaust and the cylinders, that fuel explosively burns and creates a loud popping sound.
The problem with the Holley power valve is that it is the most sensitive circuit in the carburetor. The little rubber diaphragm has a tendency to tear or just plain fail at usually the most inopportune times. It is especially vulnerable to engine backfires.
The fix. You`ll need to remove the carb from the bike and drop the fuel from the float bowl. All jets should be removed and cleaned using carb cleaner, as should the housing of the carburetor. If you find more than a few specs of dirt in your carb, there`s a bigger problem at hand; air flow.
Are These Sounds Serious? Most of the time, car popping sounds are nothing to worry about. However, if you think you may have an engine knock, it`s important to have your car checked out by a mechanic as soon as possible. Engine knock can damage your engine if left unchecked.
Poor acceleration or hesitation may be a sign that your spark plug is worn or dirty or the incorrect type of plug is being used. Examples of poor acceleration include an absence of response or a delayed reaction when you twist the hand throttle or shift the thumb lever.
Low engine oil can cause a misfire, and it is very likely that the cause of the misfire was indeed the low oil pressure in your vehicle. There are three common ways low oil can cause a misfire: Your oil filter is damaged, reducing oil flow, causing improper valve timing, and resulting in a misfire.
Backfiring in internal combustion engines occurs outside of the combustion chamber, and is typically the result of an improper air to fuel ratio. An overly lean air-fuel mixture (i.e. an overabundance of air) can lead to a failure to ignite in the combustion chamber, also called a “misfire”.

I have a 1996 yamaha wave venture 1100….ran greatsat for 2 yrs..started but only ran for spray into carbs….drained fuel started and ran good. Started about month later and would only run as long as primed with starter fluids…checked fuel filter(ok)…fuel flow to fuel pump ok…output of fuel pump appears ok….but engine will only run as long as starter fluid/gas is sprayed into carbs. I don’t think it’s the carbs as it ran great a month ago…now it’s starving for gas flow….so it appears to be a fuel delivery problem…what would be the sequence of tests up to tearing into the carbs? is there a fuel filter inside the carbs? remember it fires off great when primed…until the fuel spray is consumed…

Mar 12, 2010 – Could it be the check valve? I took it off and the flap appears to be working correctly. This well has been here a long time. Never given me any problems. I do have galvenized couplers on the discharge and intake sides. Old. Could these be leaking even though they show no sign of water? The discharge is able to hold 30 pounds easily overnight. I do not hear any vacuum in the intake when I take it off. Could the pipe to the well have a leak? I know I would have to insert a sleeve bnut I do not want to go through the hassle if I do not have to. I had put on a brand new pump from the hardware store that did the same thing so I think that would elliminate the pump as being the problem.
Mar 12, 2010 – I have a 3/4hp flotec convertible jet pump. It is able to hold 30lbs pressure on the discharge side as the primie easily for 24 hours. It is not able to pull water from the well whcih has been here for years. i disconnected it for the winter and rehooked it up. The galvanized couplers on the discharge and pump side are old but do not appear to be leakeing as I taped them well. The check valve seems to be functioning well as I took it off and the flap works correctly. The well is not pulling watrer. there does not appear to be a vacuum on the check vale when I losen it. could the check valve be bad? I am aware I might have to resleeve the well, but do not want to hassle with this if I do not have to. I want to eliminate everything else first. i put another brand new pump on it to see if it was that. That partiuclar pump which was the same thng did not work either.

ANSWER : Your well has gone dry it seems. It has happened to my before. At first the new pump I purchased that did not pump I took back for exchange and still no water. I finally gave in and called the well experts and I was told the well was dried up

2011 ninja 1000 fuel pump not coming on
first cycle of the key, but injectors come on.

Engine killed when i hit a bump and let out clutch.
I restarted it and let out clutch and it killed again.
I parked the bike on the stand and let it sit for an hour, then i restarted it and the bike started up, when i gave it gas it backed fire.
Do you think it could be the fuel pump or relay? The shop thinks it could be the kick stand switch, but even acts up on neutral and the gas pump doesn’t come on first cycle of key when cold. Only injectors come on.

ANSWER : I would agree with the shop, as far as check the simply things first.while trouble shooting you want to start with the easy things, if you jump right into the pricey things and that is not it you have spent money and time and still have the problem. If you have a multimeter it will make this pretty easy. put your meter on the ohm setting and open and close the switch ( sidestand, clutch, ect.) if one of your safety swtich is not working right it will make your bike act up. start with that and if they are all working as they should please let me know and we can go deeper into it. I had a bike come into the shop that would cut out while riding, every bump every turn. I chased my tail because i didn’t start simple. i sent a lot of time and ended up paying for a fuel pump out of pocket because that wasn’t the problem. All the switches where working and nothing seemed right everything was working. after a few days while raising the bike on the left i notched the side stand moving a little with ever little bump on the way up. long story short the spring on the side stand had lost it’s ” spring” and won’t hold the side stand up right, every bump every turn the side stand moved a little letting the switch open and kill the bike .let me know what you find and if you need more help I’ll get and send you the wiring diagram and we can start work out the problem.M.Woodring

My 1977 Evinrude 140 HP outboard engine looses power when it hits @4,200 rpm’s and goes down to 3,500 then back up to 4,200 and then back down to 3,000 or about there. This would continue if I didn’t slow down to 3,000 on my own. It runs fine at @ 3,000 when I slow it down. I have changed all the fuel lines from the fuel tank to the carbs, removed, cleaned out the fuel tank, put new gas and added a can of SeaFoam. I replaced the water seperator filter and cleaned the fuel filter. I feel the fuel pump is operating OK. Any ideas about what could be causing my problem? Could it be a bad power pack or stator? Help!!

ANSWER : Sounds like your carb is dirty inside. make sure its out of warranty first, (don’t want to void it), then pull off the bowl at the bottom of the carb and clean it. Try to avoid useing acetone based cleaners as this can sometimes ruin some seals/gaskets/components.

2005 4 stroke yamaha 150 550hrs. normally use every week but due to surgery not used for 10weeks. Just before I went down I changed internal fuel filter, and zincs in motor. finally put in sunday. motor started fine left dock hit the power and started to come up on plane then stuttered and died. changed the external fuel/water seperator pump up the primer and started up again. with in a minute died down again. limped back to dock checked fuel filter and plug wire connections. pumped up primer and left dock went right onto plane for maybe 150yds then coughed and died. I could pump up primer and it would run but then die out. the fuel filter at the front of the engine would run dry until I pumped it up again. If it were a car I would suspect a leak in a fuel line but I can’t find any sign of one.
before we launched I put 10 gallons of fresh fuel in and added another bottle of ethanol stabilizer (CRC brand)
what proceedure should I follow to isolate the problem? I am a fairly competent mechanic as far as cars and trucks go. I don’t really want to have to take it to a marine mechanic.
ANSWER : This is going to be the fuel pump is not pumping any fuel. The primer is acting as a fuel pump. When you prime it, it gives the engine enough fuel to run for a little bit. But as soon as the fuel runs out, the engine is dying. So this is going to be a bad fuel pump.
