Make sure you are holding in the BLADE CONTROL BAR against the push handle when you pull the cord to start the mower. Be sure to prime the fuel bulb 3 times prior to starting as well. See page 9 of the owner’s manual for details and illustrations.

If the engine will not turn over at all and the cord will not extend out when you pull it, then your machine may be seized up completely. You will then have to disassemble the engine and starter assembly to determine the extent of the problem. Any local small engine mechanic can do the work for a reasonable fee if you are unwilling to attempt the repair yourself.

A few things you can try before a complete overhaul is rotating the cutter blades by hand to see if the shaft rotates freely. Be sure to be careful as there are likely some sharp edges on the blades. Also try removing the spark plug and squirting some WD40 into the cylinder hole. Replace the spark plug, tighten and replace the wire. After letting that soak in for an hour, try pulling the starter cord firmly again a few times to try to unseize the unit.

The problem may be in the recoil starter itself. A tangled coil of rope or a broken spring may be the problem. In many cases the recoil starter is easily replaced as a single assembly. DO NOT attempt do take the starter apart.

Use Carburetor Cleaner

Fortunately, you can generally do this without even taking the carburetor out of the engine. Start by purchasing some commercial lawnmower carburetor cleanerOpens a new window, which comes in a simple spray can and will make it easy to clean the inside and outside of the carb.

Replacing a ripcord on your lawn mower is a quick and relatively straightforward job most homeowners can tackle. It takes less than an hour and you probably won`t spend more than $20 on parts if you have the basic tools you need to do the job.
Every petrol lawn mower owner will experience this issue at some point: The starter cord won`t pull or is very hard to pull. This problem is usually caused by the engagement of the engine flywheel brake. Check to see if the flywheel brake is pressing against the handle before pulling the rope again.
In this case, the vertical component of the applied force acts in the direction of the weight of the mower. This the effective weight of the mower. Since the effective weight of the lawn mower is lesser in the first case, pulling the lawn mower is easier than pushing it.
The most common signs of bad spark plugs include start-up trouble, rough idling, sluggish acceleration, declining fuel economy, engine misfiring, and engine knocking.
Use carburetor cleaner to remove deposits, clogs & debris

Luckily, you can take care of many of these problems quickly and easily; often without even removing the carburetor from the engine.

A dirty carburetor is one of the most common causes for a lawn mower not being able to start after sitting unused for months or years at a time.
Car oil is similar to lawn mower oil, and you can use it in lawn mowers with four-stroke engines. However, car oil has a high concentration of additives and can damage smaller engines. It`s also important to match base oils; otherwise, you risk damaging your lawn mower`s motor.
Too much oil in the engine can also cause the pressure on the crankshaft to increase, causing oil to enter the exhaust pipe from the crankshaft into the combustion chamber, blocking the combustion chamber hole with oil and eventually clogging the engine. Wet spark plug; excess oil will also flood the spark plug well.
What Type Of Oil For a Lawn Mower? While automotive engine oil, such as 10W-30 or 10W-40, can be used in a lawn mower engine, it is generally recommended that SAE 30 motor oil be used.
In addition to visual inspection, you can also feel the cord to check for signs of damage. A damaged cord may feel warm or hot to the touch, or you may feel small electrical shocks when you touch it. These are signs that the cord is not working correctly and should be replaced.
Electric start (also known as key start or push button start) is a lawnmower feature found on petrol lawnmowers, which allows you to start the engine at the push of a button or the turn of a key instead of pulling a recoil starter rope.

The height difference between the mower deck and the blade

The mower may crush the grass before it reaches the blade if the frontal wheels are adjusted far lower than the rear ones. When the machine moves backwards, nothing crushes the grass. Hence, it will mow better in reverse.

For your engine to remain at optimum performance, it is recommended to replace your spark plugs once a year or after 30 engine hours. Since your lawn mower needs regular, annual maintenance, it is easiest to include replacing spark plugs as part of your maintenance routine.
You can also try hairspray if you`re stranded without starter fluid or one of the other options. Hairspray ignites incredibly easily and can be sprayed into the carburetor just as easily as any of the choices. Regardless of your starter aid, always be aware of how much you spray into your engine.
Tighten the spark plug finger-tight until the gasket reaches the cylinder head, then tighten about ½ – ⅔ turn more with a spark plug wrench. (Taper seat: About 1/16 turn more.)

ANSWER : Pull spark plugs and see if it will pull over if not fuel may have filled the crank case drain & refill to proper level (starter is stuck in lube shaft & movethe gear up & down by hand to free up)

Motor was running great, but it died slowly and never start again
ANSWER : Check to see if you have a spark -then check if you are still getting fuel-and how old is the fuel-because it is recommended ,an im assuming its a 2 stroke motor,that the fuel should be replace with a fresh 2 stroke mixture every couple of months as the mixture jellyfies and sludges up the carb etc-try those first

I have a problem with my machine, on occasion, not recognizing when I’m starting, and the display will not start. I have to remove one of the batteries or it will stay on forever. When it starts up, it works fine, no complaints whatsoever. But lately, I’ve not been able to use it due to the start-up problem. I put the batteries in, the display comes on, but it will not start up when I begin motion. The control buttons will not work, either. Please inform me what it is I can do to fix this problem. I have a riding mower with a 14.5 hp briggs motor with ohv. Does this motor have some compression relief valve or something for starting purposes??? Sometimes the mower starts fine and sometimes has to much compression to roll over.
ANSWER : Hi,

Take the plug out, insert a screwdriver, etc. in there. Now turn the engine over by hand to see if the piston moves in and out. Sounds like a bend pushrod though. There is no such compression valve as clearly mentioned in the article bellow as well.

Please try to replace the spark plug .Check the carburetor and fuel line for excessive build up. Check air filter…not excessively dirty. Sanded flywheel and ignition armature legs, and reset positioning.

I have a 2001 Yamaha XL700Z Waverunner. The compression on both cylinders is about 120, it starts and runs fine – dry. Won’t quite idle, but I can start it and rev it up fine (for a short period, of course). However, as soon as it gets in the water, it will barely run – it will start and sputter and you cannot get it to run more than a few seconds or rev up. Take it back out, let it dry, starts & revs fine. It is not getting any water in the casing that I can tell, its almost as if water is getting something wet through the cooling system that I cannot see?
