To summaries, trailers are directly compatible with bikes that have a rear axle of 12mm diameter or less where the steel hitch can sit flush against the bike at the left rear dropout.
Trailer Plugs and Sockets

The yellow wire gives power to the left-hand brake light and the left-hand turn signal. There`s a green wire that controls the right-hand brake and light and the right-hand turn signal. The last wire of a standard four-wire system is white — it`s used as the ground wire.

Bike Compatibility

Compared to a bike seat, trailers are generally pretty compatible with bikes. I`ve used a trailer with all kinds of bikes over the years: my mountain bike, my road bike, my commuter bike, and even my fat bike. The one thing to be aware of, however, is that most trailers attach to your rear axle.

Biking with a trailer isn`t much different than biking without. You`ll adapt quickly if you`re already a confident cyclist. That said, here are a few beginner tips for using a bike trailer with a road bike. Be sure to secure whatever you`re towing before you leave.
In order to tow anything using a non-motorized bicycle, you`re going to have to buy a trailer that`s designed for them. These are trailers that typically attach to the bicycle`s back wheel or to the bicycle`s seat.
A trailer coupler is a device that connects the hitch of the tow vehicle to a trailer. They come in many different sizes and types, but the trailer coupler must match the tongue on your particular trailer. They all work by clamping around the trailer hitch ball.
Child passenger (as rider): Trailer bikes, or pedal trailers, are one-wheeled trailers (tandem trailers) with integrated seat, handle bars, and drive train, that normally attaches to the bike via the seat post (and operate very much like a tandem).
Your child should be at least 12 months old to ride in a bike trailer. We`ll cover the reasons for this below, along with a few tips to stay safe while biking with your baby in a child bike trailer!
Green is for the right turn signal. Yellow is for left turn signal. White is ground, and brown is for the trailer`s taillights. These four types of wires together constitute what is known as “four-way wiring.” Four-way wiring is quite common and is suitable for most light-duty trailers and boat trailers.
Verify that your safety chains are connected from the trailer to your tow vehicle. Those two chains should criss-cross over each other to form an “X”. The reason for this, is that if for some reason your coupler comes unhooked, the coupler will land on the criss-crossed chains instead of hitting the road.
Cross the chains over each other before attaching them to the bottom of your vehicle`s trailer hitch. Twist the chains to shorten their length and keep them from dragging. Insert the hooks from the bottom to ensure that they will stay attached. Attach the trailer`s electrical plug to your vehicle`s electrical system.
When overloaded the single wheel trailer transfers too much weight to the bicycle and riding becomes unstable. Additionally, heavily loaded trailers can cause frame or hub damage to your bicycle due to the torsion forces transferred through the unidirectional pivoting hitch.
Easy – unlike some other sports, cycling does not require high levels of physical skill. Most people know how to ride a bike and, once you learn, you don`t forget. Good for strength and stamina– cycling increases stamina, strength and aerobic fitness.
Bicycles do have weight limits. But with so many different types, geometry, materials and parts used, it`s impossible to standardise. Generally however, most bikes will have a weight limit of between 275 lbs and 300 lbs.
Trailers, which have two bicycle-type wheels and a long hitching arm that fastens to a bicycle from behind and ride low to the ground, are potentially safer in an accident. That`s because a child would fall about three feet from a mounted bike seat compared with a fall of about 6 inches from a trailer.
Most single trailers have an indicated weight capacity of 75 pounds, while double trailers are 100 pounds. Smaller, lower-end trailers may have lower total weight capacities.
You can lock your bike trailer with a chain or cable lock in the same way as a U-lock. Just remove the trailer from your bike and secure it to a stationary, unmovable object like a bike rack. The locking mechanism should be raised off the ground so thieves can`t smash them with a hammer.
Any vehicle towing a trailer requires a trailer wiring harness to safely connect the taillights, turn signals, brake lights and other necessary electrical systems.
A hitch pin is a small metal rod that keeps a ball mount shank and other trailer hitch parts from sliding out of a hitch receiver tube. Typically, a hitch pin is bent in an “L” shape. It is designed to insert into the side of the hitch receiver, pass through the ball mount shank and come out the other side.
What is a Hitch Ball? A hitch ball (or trailer ball or tow ball) is the ball-shaped attachment that connects the trailer to a hitch. The ball allows the trailer to pivot, providing smooth turning while towing. While the diameter of the hitch ball is fairly standard, hitch ball weight ratings may differ.
The standard ball size for a trailer hitch is 2 inches in diameter. Most trailers have a 2-inch coupler, making the 2-inch ball the standard size. However, the ball size may be different depending on the size of the trailer. The other common ball sizes include 1-7/8 inches and 2-5/16 inches.
Dual locking pins are a safety feature that prevent the ball mount from detaching from the hitch receiver. They are essential because they provide a failsafe if the main locking pin fails or if it is not properly inserted.
The pin and clip are small but important features. It holds your ball mount inside the receiver so it doesn`t move around or fall out while you`re towing your trailer. Furthermore, hitch locks are available to add an extra level of safety and security as they help prevent your ball mount from being removed or stolen.
Someone in reasonable physical condition can generally pull a 300 lb load at 10 mph (16 km/hr) on level ground if there`s no wind. A person exerting the same effort could pull a load of 600 lb. (275 kg) at a speed of about 8 mph (11-13 km/hr), and a 1000 lb load at about 6 mph.

I just bought an InStep® Joyrider Bicycle Trailer and the photo’s are not very good. When attached is the bike trailer hitch supposed to attach perpedicular to the bike and the spring bends to 90 deg. when pulled. It seems odd to me, almost like there should be another part.
ANSWER : The hitch part that fastens to your bike rear axle has 3 pieces, a dimpled washer which goes on first then the hitch plate and a pin that holds the trailer to the hitch. Take off the axle nut (15 mm wrench) install the dimpled washer it goes on with the 90 deg tang facing the bike wheel and in the channel so it can’t rotate. Then put the hitch plate on, mine faced down for the correct height, line up the dimpled washer with the bumps on the hitch plate to locate it properly. reinstall the wheel nut and be sure to align the wheel so it runs straight and true (I oopsed on this the first time) then attach the trailer, it is a 90 deg hook-up then you simply put the the pin in and you are good to go. The unique hook-up makes it so smooth and dampened that you don’t even know it’s behind you. We really love ours!
