The more complex the engine, the higher the level of difficulty for pump replacement. However, a person who easily figures out how to do things can usually replace a water pump that is on the front of the engine, without any mechanical experience.
Replace the fan, pulley, radiator shroud (if so equipped) and drive belts. Adjust all belts to the proper tension, and fill the system with a 50/50 antifreeze/water mixture. Reconnect the battery ground cable, start the vehicle and check for leaks.
On most vehicles, the car water pump is driven by the engine`s serpentine belt, which is connected to the pump`s pulley. The pulley and belt work together to move coolant through these steps: Coolant is sucked in at the centre of the impeller. Centrifugal force pushes it out through the impeller blades.
Usually located underneath the timing belt or to the side of the front of the engine, the water pump is a key part of your car`s cooling system. The water pump is vital to your engine`s operation because it ensures that coolant keeps moving from the radiator and into the engine.
Can you change the water pump without changing the timing belt? In principle, this is possible, but we do not recommend it. As already mentioned, all components are subject to the same mileage and wear. Therefore, all components in the synchronous drive should always be replaced at the same time.
It could be a simple or difficult job, but that depends on the vehicle and where the water pump is located. It`s a job usually best left for professional mechanics. The water pump may be hidden under other components and may require special tools depending on the vehicle design.
Can you repair a water pump? This will depend on what has caused it to stop working in the first place. Simple issues can be repaired quickly, but for more complex problems it can be simpler and cheaper to replace the pump.
A water pump has several small parts that join together to make one working machine. Its most basic components include the hub/pulley, bearing, body/house, seal, and impeller.
With the engine off, open your hood and locate the water pump pulley. With gloves on, grab it and wiggle it back and forth. There should be no movement, if there is, this along with the noise is a good indication you may have a water pump problem.
Failing to quickly replace a problematic pump can cause considerable damage to your engine. It is recommended to replace your engine`s pump and timing belt every 60,000 miles, per most manufacturers` recommendations. It is important not to drive if you suspect your pump is failing!
Firstly, it`s important to point out that there`s two main categories of water pumps, namely: centrifugal pumps, and. positive displacement pumps.
A water pump replacement costs between $400 and $800 depending on the vehicle and the difficulty involved. Parts can run from $200 to $400, with labor services similarly priced. These estimates do not include taxes or shop materials, and disposal fees.
You should replace the water pump after 60,000 to 100,000 miles for most modern vehicles. If your car is new, there is no need to worry about it. However, if you drive an older car, be sure to mention it to your mechanic.
Fixing a broken water pump can take anywhere from two hours to most of a day. A simple replacement should take around two hours, but more complicated work trying to fix a water pump (which will save you money on parts) can take four or more hours.
The expected lifespan of a water pump is 60,000 miles to 90,000 miles, but many can last longer than that. Usually, once your car has reached the coveted 100,000 miles, you can plan on the need for a pump replacement soon. Sometimes, this cooling system part will give you signs that it needs to be replaced.
So when the water pump must be replaced, it is a good idea to go ahead and also replace the timing belt, timing belt tensioner and idler pulleys.
The coolant is no longer circulating properly through the car. Heating and cooling may be affected by the vehicle. The car may begin to overheat as well. It is possible to drive your vehicle without a water pump, but not good to.
The water pump contains several seals and gaskets that keep coolant enclosed and secure as it flows throughout the engine. As these seals and gaskets age, they will become worn, cracked, and dried out. Once this occurs, the coolant can leak from the water pump.
An engine water pump assembly is formed of a rotatable shaft divided along its length into a bearing portion terminating in a drive connection and a sealing portion terminating in an impeller end upon which a water impeller is mounted. A tubular, journal-type bearing surrounds the shaft bearing portion.
The average cost to replace or install a new well pump is typically between $1,000 and $2,750, with the national average being about $1,750.
Main Types of Pumps: Centrifugal and Positive Displacement.
The water pump pulley attaches to the water pump so that it can be powered by the fan belt, V-belt or serpentine belt, designed in the right diameter to ensure correct water circulation to deliver effective engine cooling.
Water pumps can leak from 2 different places; the shaft seal or the water pump gasket. If the water pump bearings are starting to wear out they will allow the shaft to wobble and coolant will leak out.
Age and wear

Like all moving and rotating components, brushes wear and windings short. The most common cause of water pump failure is simply from age and wear of its electric motor. Over time, most parts in a car or truck, auxiliary pumps included, start to break down due to constant wear and tear.

Mar 12, 2010 – Could it be the check valve? I took it off and the flap appears to be working correctly. This well has been here a long time. Never given me any problems. I do have galvenized couplers on the discharge and intake sides. Old. Could these be leaking even though they show no sign of water? The discharge is able to hold 30 pounds easily overnight. I do not hear any vacuum in the intake when I take it off. Could the pipe to the well have a leak? I know I would have to insert a sleeve bnut I do not want to go through the hassle if I do not have to. I had put on a brand new pump from the hardware store that did the same thing so I think that would elliminate the pump as being the problem.
Mar 12, 2010 – I have a 3/4hp flotec convertible jet pump. It is able to hold 30lbs pressure on the discharge side as the primie easily for 24 hours. It is not able to pull water from the well whcih has been here for years. i disconnected it for the winter and rehooked it up. The galvanized couplers on the discharge and pump side are old but do not appear to be leakeing as I taped them well. The check valve seems to be functioning well as I took it off and the flap works correctly. The well is not pulling watrer. there does not appear to be a vacuum on the check vale when I losen it. could the check valve be bad? I am aware I might have to resleeve the well, but do not want to hassle with this if I do not have to. I want to eliminate everything else first. i put another brand new pump on it to see if it was that. That partiuclar pump which was the same thng did not work either.

ANSWER : Your well has gone dry it seems. It has happened to my before. At first the new pump I purchased that did not pump I took back for exchange and still no water. I finally gave in and called the well experts and I was told the well was dried up

I have Detroit 60 series installed on a launch. Recently the Starboard unit suffers a catastrophic failure and piston No2 came out of the block, making a big hole. This engines are using heat exchangers, and sea water cooled Charge Air Coolers and sea water self priming raw water pump. We contact the local dealer an the veredict was a “Massive salt water ingestion” that caused an Hydraulic lock and damaged cyls 6 and 2. They say that the water came from the deck covers, but there is no way for that to happen, I think they dont want to honor any warranty, because we suspect that the water came from the Charge Air Cooler. I want to know if the CAC can cause that type of failures and if anyone had a similar problem. The engine cost is about 66K and only had 2300 hours.
ANSWER : I would have to say that a sleeve got pitted or lost an oring or the CAC sprung a leak. I believe you are correct in your assumption that the water did not enter the unit in the manner they are saying. The only real way to tell is a complete tear down and someone is going to have to pay. They are also a high maintenance item and someone is going to say that the preventive maintenance was not done.

I have a volvo penta md7a marine diesel engine fitted in my sailing boat. Recently, I changed the bottom sea **** which was almost blocked. Apparently the new sea **** is working well as it should. But this week with no apparent reason and without use of engine, I noticed that the cooling system water cup (the recipient which connects with the sea **** hose and the water pump hose) is empty and it Im not able to keep it full like it was before.The water vanishes every time I tried to fill it up in order to keep the water running throught the system. However the waterpump seems to be working. But almost no water is coming out of the exhaustor, of course, just a few drops once in a while. What might be going on ?? Thanks.
ANSWER : I don’t have a picture of the installation, but I can imagine a water filter above the water line with an improperly fitted cover and an air leak that lets the seawater drain out – losing the prime. Old Swampy in New Hampshire

2005 4 stroke yamaha 150 550hrs. normally use every week but due to surgery not used for 10weeks. Just before I went down I changed internal fuel filter, and zincs in motor. finally put in sunday. motor started fine left dock hit the power and started to come up on plane then stuttered and died. changed the external fuel/water seperator pump up the primer and started up again. with in a minute died down again. limped back to dock checked fuel filter and plug wire connections. pumped up primer and left dock went right onto plane for maybe 150yds then coughed and died. I could pump up primer and it would run but then die out. the fuel filter at the front of the engine would run dry until I pumped it up again. If it were a car I would suspect a leak in a fuel line but I can’t find any sign of one.
before we launched I put 10 gallons of fresh fuel in and added another bottle of ethanol stabilizer (CRC brand)
what proceedure should I follow to isolate the problem? I am a fairly competent mechanic as far as cars and trucks go. I don’t really want to have to take it to a marine mechanic.
ANSWER : This is going to be the fuel pump is not pumping any fuel. The primer is acting as a fuel pump. When you prime it, it gives the engine enough fuel to run for a little bit. But as soon as the fuel runs out, the engine is dying. So this is going to be a bad fuel pump.

We have a 1994 HiLo FunLight camp trailer. The water pump does not come on when attempting to use the water.
The tank is full of water, the battery is fully charged, the trailer is connected to power. Any suggestions? Where is the fuse located? Where is the SureFlo Water Pump located in this trailer?

If there is a fuse or a breaker for the pump, it would more than likely be on the DC panel. The pump could be located in a variety of different places but would probably be under a sink, around or on top of water tank, or in storage under the bed, access being either by removing matteress and a panel hidden by matress or, by removing a drawer in the base of the bunks lower structure. You probably have a pressure valve in the line somewhere near your water inlet connection, you may want to check that and, the pump might be in thta area also.

ANSWER : Hi, maybe you should try to prime the machine before pumping it again. You probably have a faulty stop valve with cannot retain water for pumping, so you have to prime the machine with water before pumping….

I need to hook up 3/4 cpvc water supply line to water meter
ANSWER : I went to Home Depot for the same reason.Ended up getting a brass fitting with a cpvc insert that excepted the cpvc pipe to be glued into brass fitting once it was screwed in place.Came out about a foot then used a coupler to join both cpvc pipes so in the future I can replace meter without cutting pipe.Im not a plummer just a home owner who cant afford one so I dont know if I did it right but it works.
