Depending on the type
of gun you own the sound can match that of a regular gun, the sound is a bit
like a hammer hitting a hard surface.

As you can see from the infographic below, a 9mm pistol typically produces around 160 decibels. Looking at that, it is clear that the noise from even a small pistol is way over the limit!
22 LR makes more than trivial noise — about 155 dB. However, a . 177 or even . 22-caliber airgun only generates noise somewhere in the low to mid-90s range depending on the caliber and model.
Most low powered airguns are quieter than the bounce of a basketball and certainly many are drowned out by the sound of a lawnmower or leaf blower. The typical nail gun or even someone pounding nails with a hammer makes more noise than quiet pellet rifles and BB slingers.
120 – 140 decibels: Such as, a rock concert, auto racing, or a hammer pounding a nail. 125 – 155 decibels: Like, firecrackers or fireworks, or a jet engine. 170 – 190 decibels: For example, a shot gun blast or a rocket lift off.
A 100 dB sound like that of a power tool or a car horn is 100,000 times louder than a sound that is 50 decibels like an average suburban home or a quiet room. We, humans, will perceive this difference as 32 times louder.
THE AIR GUN MUST BE UNCOCKED AND UNLOADED

It is critically important that your air gun is not loaded or cocked when transporting in public. Even a cleaning pellet left in the gun can be classified as “a loaded weapon”, so don`t take this one (or any of these) lightly!

Depending on the caliber of the firearm, most gunshots will register around 150-170 dB. At these levels, hearing damage can occur quickly. It`s also worth pointing out the proximity to our ears when shooting. Shouldering up against a shotgun or rifle places these ultra-loud noises very close to our ears.
That being said, tests find . 177s to fire at roughly 76 decibels while . 22s fire at around 80. That may not seem like a big difference, but decibel measurements aren`t linear; 80 decibels is twice as loud as 70, and four times as loud as 60.
The vast majority of modern guns fire bullets at speeds that exceed the speed of sound. And just like a jet creates a sonic boom, bullets create a loud sonic crack when they break the sound barrier.
A powerful . 22 caliber air rifle such as a Benjamin Discovery or Marauder fires a 14.3 grain pellet with a muzzle velocity of approximately 900 ft/sec. The firearm generates a muzzle energy of approximately 130 ft lbs of energy at the muzzle whereas that of the air rifle is only about 26 ft lbs.
Guns are much louder than thunder up close. According to OSHA, limited exposure to impulse (extremely short-duration) sounds, like gunshots, under 140 dB of sound pressure level will not cause hearing damage.
According to a write-up from American Training Resources, compressed air can have noise levels between 110 and 140 decibels, much higher than the ideal level of 90 decibels set by OSHA.
A sperm whale`s click is 200 decibels, the unit used to measure the intensity of a sound, said Jennifer Miksis-Olds, associate professor of acoustics at Penn State.
At 194 dB, the energy in the sound waves starts distorting and they create a complete vacuum between themselves. The sound is no longer moving through the air, but is in fact pushing the air along with it, forming a pressurized wall of moving air.
A whisper is about 30 dB, normal conversation is about 60 dB, and a motorcycle engine running is about 95 dB. Noise above 70 dB over a prolonged period of time may start to damage your hearing. Loud noise above 120 dB can cause immediate harm to your ears.
While airguns are most commonly thought of for small-game hunting, they have expanded into predator and big-game hunting. The guns for hunting these varied species include spring piston rifles, Pre-Charged Pneumatic (PCP) powered air rifles in standard calibers, and larger-caliber PCP rifles for predators and big game.
Consistency is key when it comes to airguns and how you hold and shoot them. Most shooters find a limit of around 20-30 yards for hunting consistently, however, some accurately hunt beyond 50 yards with “springers”.
177 caliber steel BB can pierce the skin and break glass. Never fire them at anything you don`t intend to shoot.
You asked what the difference is between an air rifle and a BB gun. Your question is in relation to the fact the current dangerous weapons statutes treat these two weapons inconsistently. BB guns and air rifles are similar but not identical. They each shoot an individual small pellet through the use of compressed air.
Even though some may consider BB guns as toy guns, they can be very dangerous and cause serious injury or even death in some situations. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a safety alert on BB guns, warning consumers that BB guns can kill because of their high muzzle velocity.
90 decibels is a high noise level, equivalent to the noise generated by a leaf blower or the sound level of a concert. Compared to 80 dB, 90 dB is 10 times more intense and twice as loud. Whenever you are exposed to this noise level, you should wear hearing protection.
A small . 22-caliber rifle can produce noise around 140 dB, while big-bore rifles and pistols can produce sound over 175 dB. Firing guns in a place where sounds can reverberate, or bounce off walls and other structures, can make noises louder and increase the risk of hearing loss.
22 caliber bullet is quieter than a 9mm, the most common firearm round. While a . 22 emits about 120 sound decibels, a 9mm produces up to 160 because a . 22 has smaller rounds than a 9mm.
The . 22 Caliber wins as a clean sweep for the best squirrel hunting caliber, even if the . 177 might be a little more accurate or quieter at times, the Gamo technology behind a . 22 caliber can be deadly, quiet, and extremely accurate!

My gun just beeps when i pull the trigger even when hooked up to hpa.battery is new.last time i used the gun just before it messed up i had it hooked to o2 and it would fire then beep ,i have a anti syphon tube installed to. the air shot out the asa instead of the reg when i took off the tank.usually gun holds air with tank off then you shoot it to get rid of stored air, this time it shot out the asa????
ANSWER : You have probably messed up your solenoid, did you fire the marker straight up with the o2? I would make sure that all of the board settings are back to factory default especially the dwell and reattempt with compressed air. If the marker is still not firing get your hands on a new solenoid for it.
