The fuel filter is located between the fuel tank and the fuel pump, and removes impurities that prevent your car from running smoothly — a clogged filter can lead to a “coughing” engine, and even a complete shutdown.

Make depressurizing the fuel system easier by changing your fuel filter while the gas tank is below ¼ full. The almost-empty system won`t have as much pressure. To dispose of the leaked fuel, locate the nearest hazardous waste disposal center.
In most homes, you`ll find your air filter housing located right next to your heating or cooling system`s air handler. This is a large metal box with a fan motor and fan inside it. Most air handlers are installed in the basement, attic, or utility closet.
The most common sign of a clogged fuel filter is trouble starting the car, since it depletes the oil supply going to the engine. Although a dirty fuel filter leads to ignition difficulty, a fully-clogged filter will fail completely, and the engine won`t start at all.
A clogged fuel filter causes low fuel pressure that results in a lean fuel condition and engine misfire. This can result in poor fuel mileage, rough idling and possibly cause the check engine light to come on. Once that light is on, it`s time for a trip to the repair shop.
It is possible to change your car`s fuel filter yourself if you have the appropriate tools, and have some knowledge of mechanics. Locate the fuel filter. It is usually on the engine block but can be more or less easily accessible. When in doubt, consult your maintenance log.
Most diesels have two fuel filters: a “primary” filter located between the fuel tank and the engine, which cleans the fuel before it gets to the fuel transfer pump; and a “secondary” filter up near the engine, which gives the fuel a final cleaning before it gets to the fuel injectors.
Symptoms of Dirty Diesel Fuel

The outward symptoms of these are pretty straight forward. You`ll get lower fuel efficiency. Hesitation upon acceleration and rough idling. You`ll also get higher levels of certain kinds of emissions, though those will be caught by the emissions control system.

In general, the fuel filter is difficult to open, but it can still be cleaned to remove various dirt that has settled. If the dirt accumulated is too bad, you should replace a new air filter because the dirt that has settled for too long will be tough to clean and usually takes a long time.
Bad Starting Properties: When the fuel filter is clogged the time to get the ideal pressure in the fuel line will take longer and the engine will have starting problems or will not start at all. Damage to other components: Modern common rail injection systems are made with a high accuracy.
The fuel filter ensures that fuel gets to the engine smoothly. The longer the injectors are kept clean by changing the fuel filter, the more power and better gas mileage they will provide.
They usually require a change every 10,000 to 15,000 miles whereas a modern gasoline fuel filter could go 100K+ miles before a change is needed – if at all. Most diesel truck applications will require 2 diesel fuel filters to be serviced.

Some clear indications your fuel filter needs to be changed include a decrease in fuel efficiency, a check engine light on, and/or sputtering while accelerating.
When a fuel filter is clogged it starves the engine of fuel and can cause the engine pressure to drop. As a result, you may hear a knocking sound. A clogged fuel filter may present like one of the symptoms above, but it`s also possible that your car may not start at all. Your engine needs fuel to turn over.
Look at Your Existing Air Filter. If your HVAC system has an air filter, you can look for its size to ensure you can get the right replacement. Most filters have sizes listed on the side in print, including the length, width, and depth in inches. Usually, they`re listed in that order.
The fuel filter is located somewhere in between your fuel tank and your engine. Typically, the fuel filter is either located inside the fuel tank (in the opening of the fuel line, which feeds gas to your car), or somewhere in the fuel line (this is usually at the bottom of your car.)
Primary filter: most often located on the suction side of the transfer pump. Secondary filter: Most often located on its charge side.
Turn off the engine. Disconnect the battery cable to prevent any accidental sparks or arcs from the battery.
One of the first symptoms commonly associated with a bad or failing fuel filter is hard starting. A dirty fuel filter may restrict the fuel system flow, or at least make it inconsistent, which can cause the vehicle to experience hard starting. This is more likely if the filter on the vehicle has never been changed.
In the case of a clogged diesel fuel filter, the engine will likely start to idle rough and perhaps sound like it is going to stall. This is especially true when cold. Once heated up, the engine may sound like it is choking because there isn`t enough fuel getting into the engine`s fuel injectors.

I have a 1996 yamaha wave venture 1100….ran greatsat for 2 yrs..started but only ran for spray into carbs….drained fuel started and ran good. Started about month later and would only run as long as primed with starter fluids…checked fuel filter(ok)…fuel flow to fuel pump ok…output of fuel pump appears ok….but engine will only run as long as starter fluid/gas is sprayed into carbs. I don’t think it’s the carbs as it ran great a month ago…now it’s starving for gas flow….so it appears to be a fuel delivery problem…what would be the sequence of tests up to tearing into the carbs? is there a fuel filter inside the carbs? remember it fires off great when primed…until the fuel spray is consumed…

My 1977 Evinrude 140 HP outboard engine looses power when it hits @4,200 rpm’s and goes down to 3,500 then back up to 4,200 and then back down to 3,000 or about there. This would continue if I didn’t slow down to 3,000 on my own. It runs fine at @ 3,000 when I slow it down. I have changed all the fuel lines from the fuel tank to the carbs, removed, cleaned out the fuel tank, put new gas and added a can of SeaFoam. I replaced the water seperator filter and cleaned the fuel filter. I feel the fuel pump is operating OK. Any ideas about what could be causing my problem? Could it be a bad power pack or stator? Help!!

LX 188. Engine suddenly dies. The fluel in the bowel of the fuel filter is empty. If I crank the engine the filter becomes dry and is collapsing some but the engine does not start. When I remove the supply line from the fuel pump to the carberator and crank the enginge there is a strong stream of gas being pumped out. I tap on the carberator ??? is the float is hung not allowing fuel to enter. Cranking the engine with the line off refills the bowel of the gas filter. Reattache line to the carberator===engine starts. Ran perfect for 20minutes then suddenly died. Repeated all the above and engine again started. What to do to fix this? Thanks

My pool filtering system has been installed for 5 years and has worked well. It has a Jacuzzi 1.5hp pump and a Hayward s244t filter with heater and a salt generator. I have never replaced the sand. It has had a problem 2 times in the past week at startup in the morning. It appears there is blockage in the filter preventing flow through it because when I open the pump backet, it is pressurized. If I then backflush or rinse the filter, everything appears to work fine. Then I switch it back to normal filter operation and it works ok. I have a timer on the filter and the problem only occurs first in the morning when the timer starts it. Any ideas?
ANSWER : Assuming you don’t have too much sand in it or something like that, because it used to work fine, my first guess would be that you are not setting the rinse cycle after the back flush, and the same dirt is coming right back into the filter.{ … RINSE—After backwashing, with pump off, set valve toRINSE. Start pump and operate for about 1/2 to 1 minute.This ensures that all dirty water from backwashing isrinsed out of the filter to waste, preventing possible returnto the pool. John deere 310e backhoe. The machine has intermitten power. It runs fine at times, then loses all power and rpms drop to almost stahling the machine. We have changed the fuel filter and drained and cleaned the fuel tank. Problems seems tro occur after machine has run for approx. 20 mins.
ANSWER : Remove the injectors and check. it’s a motor issue running out of power.
If the timing advance was not working properly, the tractor would break up a bit and skip at high RPM.Check the injectors and timing.also check the pressure of fuel.

Have a john deere 318 riding lawn mower. it had been hard to start with it taking several turns of the key to do anything, then would not always engage. once engaged, would start with no problem. now when the key is turned, does nothing. checked 2 fuses near battery and tried jumping but no change. suspect starter and or solenoid. john deer shop claims starter price is $505 with almost 4 hrs labor too. is there good way to test to see if starter, solenoid, condenser, switch, etc is problem? what is the easiest way to access and remove the staqrter and solenoid? is there a relatively cheap equivalent to this starter and solenoid?
ANSWER : Usually the shop would make the fixing of an item to look so complicated this is usually to ensure that the customer comes back. To confirm if the starter is the cause of the machine not starting. tell the shop to check the machine if either of the 2 options are the cause of the problem as they will have setup procedures for doing this. Do not settle for cheaper equivalent as this will only cause further damage to the unit. It is rather concrete that starting problems are caused by the starter.Hope this has been helpful?
