Do your best to listen for a “click” noise. If the click is strong and loud, it most likely means the solenoid has enough power and is working properly. If the clicking you are hearing is quiet or repetitive, it may be that your solenoid is not strong enough or does not have enough power from the battery.
When the starter motor solenoid engages, you should hear a clicking sound. If you hear a clicking sound but the starter motor isn`t moving, the solenoid could be engaging but not receiving enough battery power. If there`s no sound, the starter solenoid is likely malfunctioning or you might have a dead car battery.
If there`s no power to the coil or if power is interrupted, the solenoid will cease functioning and remain in whatever position it was last in. Often, power interrupts to the circuitry can cause the valve to stick, and it will remain that way even after you restore power, requiring a reset.
But a faulty solenoid that fails to make adequate electrical contact inside can also produce this tell-tale sound causing the battery to have low voltage unable to provide enough power to start your engine.
The continuous duty cycle (100% rating) means that the solenoid can be left energised for an indefinite period of time at its rated voltage without overheating.
For irrigation applications, a solenoid is considered to be good if its resistance is between 20 – 60 ohms. It is best to compare resistance measurements to that of a new solenoid. Example, if a solenoid measures 44 ohms, it would be considered good because it is between 20 – 60 ohms.
Rusting, power failure, irregular pressure, missing equipment, an incorrect amount of voltage or current, dirt stuck in the system and corrosion are some of the possible reasons why a solenoid valve may not properly close or open.
Every solenoid valve has a nominal actuation voltage, which is usually based on common power supply voltages such as 12 VDC, 24 VDC, 110 VAC, or 220 VAC. The nominal voltage is typically printed somewhere on the valve body or coil and is the voltage required to actuate (shift) the valve.

Both can make a starter solenoid to malfunction and cause starter system problems. Bad wiring instances include terminals that are left loose or connected the wrong way.

Abnormally high or abnormally low ambient temperatures to which a solenoid is exposed for an extended time may cause a solenoid to burn out. High Temperature. Coil insulation may be damaged and one layer of wire may short to the next layer. A heat shield or baffle will give some protection against radiated heat.
If you hear a click but no water comes out the valve is bad. If you don`t hear a click then the solenoid, the part with wires coming out, is bad. Either way, one of them needs to be replaced.
Solenoid coil failure can be caused by a number of factors. Applying an incorrect voltage to the coil will cause it to fail and may cause the coil to burn out. Electrical surges or spikes may also damage the coil. Burnt out coils cannot be repaired and will need to be replaced.
Should A Solenoid Have Continuity? A solenoid is expected to have continuity between the two large terminals when current is supplied to it. This means that the circuit is complete and the solenoid coils are working how they should.
For example 12 volt solenoid valve with 15 watt coil will draw 1.25 amps and if connected to a battery will have a significant power drain and will need topping up according to the power usage. Amps (current consumption) = watts (power consumption of coil) divided by 12 volts.
The strength of a solenoid can be increased by increasing the number of turns. The magnetic field due to a solenoid is similar to the magnetic field produced by a bar magnet.
Most hydraulic solenoid test machines have either flush mode or an external cleaning system for solenoids. It is easy to think of it like you are putting the solenoid in a dishwasher of sorts and using hot ATF to blast away the dirt and debris.

3 year old Toro Z4200 time cutter Z, 19 HP Kohler, engine runs great, new battery, new solenoid, with the seat sensor connected or by-passed, STILL WONT start off the key switch. Clicks at the kill relay. Would the kill relay be the problem?
Whats confusing is, both the green and blue posts on the solenoid have 14.01 volts when you turn the key to ‘start’ position. Did the same thing with the old solenoid, which is probably still good. I replaced it to eliminate that variable. It also ‘clicks’ at the fuel switch at the carburetor bowl, but that is only 1 lead (I assume a hot lead) so Im thinking that CANT be it.
Using the old hillybilly method, jumping across the 2 top posts on the solenoid, with the key in on position, it will start right up, run, drive and mow just fine.
So my best guess is this ‘KILL RELAY’ must be bad?
Any help would be appreciated, thank you !
ANSWER : These things are pre requisites for engine cranking: PTO/Blades are off/button pushed down, the steering arms are out/parked position, and you are in the seat. I think. Definitely the blades have to off.

I have a 20 HP 42 deck rider and it will not start unless i jump across the solenoid. I replaced the solenoid and same problem and the fuse is good.
ANSWER : Are you talking about jumping the starter solenoid? Have you checked all the power wires at the starter and starter solenoid? Maybe the starter has gone out.

I have a Toro 616Z Zero Turn Lawn Mower. It has Turf Tires on the rear. I have two questions. #1. Does anyone know the size of the wheel for a tube? (Noticed the tire is flat last night and pumped up but it is flat again. It has a tube. #2. I’ve noticed that the mower really tends to tear up the grass when on any kind of slope or on turns. The rear tires rip the grass out by the roots. Horrible if grass is the slightest bit damp. Is this normal? Thanks
ANSWER : First the tire is leaking around the rim bead area get the tire size and go to a tire supplier and they will get you the right size tube,this leakage is normal due to the very low air pressure run in these turf tires,secondly the reason its tearing up the grass is because the tires are squatting and this creates a twisting of the sidewall of the tire and leads to the tearing action,try about 5 lbs higher air pressure and see if this helps

Replacing solenoid relay
ANSWER : Hello the red wire from battery goes to solenoid with the nut on it. And the other side with the nut goes to the starter motor. Sometimes there will be a B for + and a M for starter motor on the solenoid. On the + side of solenoid front of the + cable from battery a blue/black wire will go there. and the other side of solenoid will be a blue/white wire. I hope this helps

My 870 Remington 12 ga. pump’s barrel now moves about 1/8th inch or less but noticably side to side and is no longer a tight fit? Just noticed it last week as barrel moves by itself or when moved manually. 1987 vintage. Basically my hunting gun as I use my Rem 1100 for skeet and trap. The situation is worrisome and probably not what I would want to continue shooting as it is now. It has never been like this until the last couple of weeks.
ANSWER : HELLO; Check and see if you have the barrel set into the receiver fully, and look at the receiver and see if it isn’t split or the mag. hasn’t become loose, I have two of these guns and Ive never had any problem like your discribing, but not to say it cant happen. PS make sure you retract the bolt before you insert the barrel in the receiver. GOOD LUCK….GREASY.

When starting scooter, solenoid just clicks. tested starter on battery and it is working but in the engine the solenoid only clicks. what is the problem?
ANSWER : See if there is a ground strap from the engine to the frame. Many engines are rubber mounted and need a wire to ground. Clean, tighten if you find one.
