Experienced athletes share their insights in answering this question:
You have to unplug it and plug it back in, sometimes this will reset it, you can pull up and down on it and turn it on and off, sometimes they just get stuck….

.. if you cant get it unstuck by just messsing with it, your incline motor is probably out and you should have someone come out and look at it cause it probably needs to be replaced.

How to Identify and Resolve Common Issues ?

We offer a diverse range of insights on identifying and resolving common problems in sports. Our sources encompass academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays shared by seasoned athletes. :

Clean the housing of the motor with compressed air and lubricate any moveable components you come across. You can also try and run the motor by itself outside the treadmill. Once it becomes unstuck, reconnect it to the treadmill, and it should work just fine.
Voltage range: 100-120 VAC, 60 Hz | Freemotion treadmills require an individual branch circuit using a NEMA 5-20R isolated ground (pictured), or similar receptacle.
AlumiRamp specializes in all types of custom work from special sizes to complicated solutions. 1:12 = 4.8° = 8.3% 1:8 = 7.1° = 12.5% 1:6 = 9.5° = 16.6% ADA/ANSI RECOMMENDS A SLOPE OF 1:12.
“The difference is so small as to be meaningless,” says Doust. Between 8 mph and 11.2 mph (5:21 pace), a 1 percent treadmill grade provides the right adjustment. At higher speeds you will need at least a 2 percent grade to offset the lack of wind resistance.
On average, treadmills use about 600 to 700 watts of electricity. A treadmill costs an average of $1.20 to use for a month, and $14.39 to use for a year. The best way to save on electricity is to install solar panels.
The energy exerted to turn a belt on the treadmill is transferred via a generator into a simple circuit that charges a small battery. The battery can then be used to charge small electrical devices.
According to what the manufacturers say, the average life of a treadmill is about 10 years. However, if you take care of your treadmill properly and lubricate the belt regularly, you can make it last longer.
The treadmill grade is basically a measure of the height distance for every 100 horizontal distance. e.g. A one-in-100 gradient = 1%, and a rise of 15 meters for every 100 meters is a 15% grade.
Depending on your physical and cardiovascular health, experts usually say around 1-2% incline is best. If you`re looking for more of a challenge or an advanced runner, you can move it up to 5-6% and beyond. Running on a treadmill incline has many benefits.
In automatic incline, the angle inclination can be adjusted at the push of the button. No manual adjustment is necessary. If you`re in the market for a treadmill, then you`ve come to the right place. The general rule of thumb is that the type of treadmill you choose is dependent on how much time you plan on using it.
Challenges Muscles

By adjusting your treadmill`s incline, you can target different muscles, such as your calves, quadriceps, and glutes. Walking or running on an incline also builds strength in the muscles that help provide function and stability to your lower body.

You Should Be Calibrating Your Treadmill. Here`s Why (and How) Every motor needs a tuneup from time to time, and your fitness equipment is no different. Running atop a treadmill can be a great way to keep your cardio goals in-check, especially when the outside conditions warrant staying inside for your daily workouts.
Start by checking if the power cord of the treadmill is tightly plugged into the wall socket. If the treadmill runs on batteries, check if they are healthy. Sometimes, resetting the circuit breaker does the trick. You can reset it by unplugging the treadmill for about 1 minute.
That message means that after you reset the calibration data, your watch will initially have less accurate workout results until it is calibrated again.
E2 Error: Treadmill overloaded. Resolution: Check the treadmill motor for signs of overheating (strong smell, grinding noises, inconsistent operation speeds). If the motor appears overheated, ensure that the treadmill is properly lubricated.
When your treadmill is set to a 10% incline, you`ll feel as though you are walking up a relatively steep hill. The gradient or treadmill grade equating to incline percentages is a measurement of the height distance for every 100-horizontal distance.
Is 12-3-30 a Good Workout? The 12-3-30 workout centers on walking, and walking, in general, is a great form of lower-impact exercise, said exercise physiologist Janet Hamilton, CSCS and running coach with Running Strong in Atlanta. For most people, walking is typically a moderate activity, Hamilton said.
A 10 percent max incline is good and available on most low-budget treadmills. Fifteen percent is even better. But why not consider going all out with a 40 percent max incline? More incline means more calories burned.
Common Mistakes When Incline Walking on a Treadmill

Starting at too high of an incline: Starting at too steep of an incline can put too much stress on the joints and increase your risk of injury. It`s important to start at a lower incline and gradually increase the incline as your body adapts to the new workout.

It is a known fact that it takes a greater effort to run on an exercise treadmill when it is inclined with positive slope than when it is in a horizontal position.
Muscle Building

Walking on an incline increases leg muscle activation, stimulating the muscles of the calves, hamstrings and glutes. The muscle fibers that are triggered and worked by walking or running on an incline are called slow twitch muscles, which is tones your muscles.

Frequency: Once you are used to treadmill walking, you can do it every day of the week. Walking at a brisk pace for 30 to 60 minutes most days of the week, or a total of 150 to 300 minutes per week, is recommended to reduce health risks.
Ideally one should walk 300 minutes a week on the treadmill for extensive health benefits, including weight loss. One can reach this goal by walking 43 to 44 minutes each day. This will help your burn 1 kilo in a week. But if you have just embarked on the weight loss journey then start with 20 minutes a day.
Here, 1 unit of power consumer = 1kWh = 1000W for an hour. So, when you run for a period of 1 hour, your treadmill consumes 2948 Watts/1000 Watts = 2.948 units of power.

My grandson was using the treadmill at low speed. He increased the incline to its highest level and kept pressing the key. Then, he tried to lower it. Nothing happened; there was a brief servomotor noise but no movement. The treadmill has been stuck at the top since then.
ANSWER : It is possible that the electric motor that moves the incline has gotten jammed from the continuous pushing of the up button. These inclines have limit switches on them. To stop the motor from running in these situations. It also has a limit switch on the bottom to stop it from going too far down. You can check this switch to make sure that it is not making. Or the lower switch could be malfunctioning. This would not let the incline come back down. You also might try to unplug the treadmill over night and see if the electronics will reset. I hope that this helps you!

Hi, I have a commercial grade treadmill, the Technogym Run 600XT Pro that gives the error code E5 (incline fault) that I can’t get rid of. What happened was that after cleaning under the motor cover and turning the treadmill on again this code appeared. What had happened was a wire had come off what looks like a safety switch on the side which I assume trips if the treadmill goes too high. Put the wire back on now I can’t get rid of this error code. Is there a way to reset it from the console please as there isn’t a fault and it was working fine before the wire came off (it didn’t touch anything). Thanks a lot.
ANSWER : Hi.If there is incline fault, then the sensor must be calibrated. The error may happen even if you do not do anything. sensor goes out of calibration and you get e5. The only reset you can do is by disconnecting power and removing console batteries if installed (that depends on the treadmill model).I suggest contacting Techogim and following the procedure to calibrate the sensor. I have a NordicTrack treadmill, model C 2255, and the incline is stuck in highest position and will not come down. I have tried the recalibration solution in the manual, but it is still will not move down from the maximum incline level. Any suggestions?
ANSWER : Hi,The most common symptoms we hear about are that the incline is
just running up and/or down and the treadmill won’t start. If this is
the case or if you cannot get the incline to work, use the incline
calibration instructions from our troubleshooting section first. If
you have tried recalibration, follow the next steps.

If the incline moves but you it will not operate
normally nor calibrate, check the wiring from the incline sensor
to the power board. If all looks normal, put it back in
calibration and see if you see a blinking “- -” symbol in the
incline window when you are calibrating. If not, the incline sensor is
bad. We now carry the most common incline sensors in stock so you
don’t have to replace the entire motor.
If the incline moves but only just a bit, it could be a
problem as simple as the gearbox on the motor being jammed. We
remove the motor from the treadmill, reconnect the wiring, and
then try to run the incline motor outside the treadmill. Many
times, this will unjam it if that is the problem and then
reinstalling it in the treadmill will get it to work. If
you have the same problem or it doesn’t run outside the machine and you
can hear it try to work, you need to replace the incline motor.
If the incline motor does not move, we need to figure
out if the motor is getting voltage. Use a simple multi-meter and set
it to AC volts. When you put it into calibration, it tries
to calibrate the directions one at a time. Measure across the white and
black wires first, then measure across the white and red wires
second. If the motor is getting voltage you will read 120VAC (or
thereabouts) one one of the measurements. If you have voltage
but the motor won’t move, you need to replace the motor.
If the incline motor does not move and you have done the voltage
test and you do not have any voltage present, there is a problem in the
electronics board that supplies the power. If the console is
powering the drive motor as normal, you can bet it is getting an incline
signal and the power board needs to be replaced (some models have an
integrated power board/controller) so if there is only a single board
the whole board has to be replaced. It is possible the console is not
giving the proper signal but we’ve never seen it happen in thousands of
treadmills.Let me know, if needed further assistance,Hope i helped you. Thanks for using ‘ Fixya ‘ and have a nice day!!

Hello, I have a Horizon Fitness Quantum II treadmill. The incline doesn’t adjust. I have found limited troubleshooting information about this problem on their website. It told me to check the electrical harness connection, which I did (unplugged and reseated). It also said “make sure there are no lights lite on the circuit board – I DO have lights lit.

Do you have a repair manual, or information about the problem with the incline, or how I should interpret the problem indicated by the red lights on the board which are on?

Thanks,
Darrell
