Common causes for fans not turning off when they should include faulty thermostats, bad wiring, and stuck relays. These problems are not easy DIY repairs and should be left to an HVAC professional.
Some of the most common reasons that the fan on your AC system keeps running are: Too much hot air is getting into your house because of air leaks and poor insulation—your AC can`t keep up. Something is impeding the airflow in your AC system and ductwork, causing the fan to work harder.
You may not think it always running is a bad thing. But if you`re asking, “Does the outside AC fan always run?” the answer is “No.” It should not run non-stop. If the unit runs continuously, something is preventing the AC from reaching the set temperature. Here are some reasons why this may be happening.

If the fan is the only thing running when the AC unit isn`t, there may be a faulty relay switch prohibiting the settings on the thermostat from being communicated to the fan. Another cause could be a wiring issue or a short circuit preventing the system from recognizing the on and off signals.
However, in some cases, the fan will keep on running even after the cooling system has turned off. This is usually the case if your thermostat is at the “on” setting. The fan will keep on running to ensure perfect air circulation in your room. To turn it off, simply change your thermostat setting to “auto.”
A jammed or clogged condenser coil could be the cause of your air conditioner running but not dropping temperatures inside. The condenser fan pulls air into the outside device through the condenser coil to extract heat energy from your home while it`s working properly.
Here`s the thing: It`s normal for your AC to run continuously during hot summer months. You see, on extremely hot days—we`re talkin` high 90s to 100s—your system needs to keep up with the incoming heat. To do that, it will run longer in order to maintain a constant, desired temperature in your home.
Cause: This problem is often caused by a faulty pressure sensor located on the air-conditioning condenser. If accessing fault codes, there are no relevant DTCs stored in the engine control module (ECM) or signal acquisition module (SAM).
Running It Without the AC Isn`t Always Efficient

Professional air conditioning repair technicians actually advise against this, however; while it`s true that the fan alone uses less energy than the AC, it will almost certainly result in higher utility bills.

Typically, the compressor sits outside and moves the refrigerant through coils. The compressor also transfers energy to the refrigerant, which allows it to change phases and cool down the air. Without a compressor, the refrigerant in your HVAC system won`t be able to pull heat from the air and cool your home.
One of the most common reasons an air conditioner runs constantly is restricted airflow. Your AC needs a certain amount of airflow in order to supply your home with cool air. If something is blocking the airflow to your AC, your system will run longer in an effort to bring in a sufficient amount of air.
They`re also not electrically-conductive themselves and take a low current so there isn`t a high chance for them to be damaged electrically. Most fans are designed for about 30,000-50,000 hours of continuous use – or 3.5-6 years.

This is the part of an air conditioning system that contains the compressor, propeller fan, circuit board and heat exchange coil. It`s situated outside, and pumps refrigerant to and from its companion indoor unit. You`ll often hear this unit referred to as the `condenser` or `heat exchanger`.

Modern air conditioning units are designed to run 24 hours a day. There is no harm in having it run to keep your home cool all day long. If you wanted to, you could have your AC unit running 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If your thermostat is set on “auto”, your AC compressor does not run 24 hours a day.
If your area is currently at the design temp, your AC should run the “average” 12-16 hours per day. If it is five degrees higher, it will run 14 to 20 hours per day. At 10 degrees over, it will run 16 to 22 hours per day. At 15 degrees over, it will most likely run all day.
On most modern cars, the cooling fan is controlled by the Engine Control Unit (ECU) which gets a signal from the coolant temperature sensor. If it`s not working, the fan won`t turn on when it needs to, which means the engine might overheat.
You should place outward-facing fans on the warmer side of your home to blow the hot air out and inward-facing fans on the cooler side to draw cool air in, says Barry Jacobs, vice president of product development at Comfort Zone, a home environment product company.
If you wonder, “How long should my HVAC fan run per hour?” then the answer is between ten to 20 minutes for two or three cycles. This works best when your home has a mild outdoor temperature. When temperatures shift strongly towards 0 or 90 degrees (heating or cooling), you will need to run the fan longer.
In short, scientists and experts seem to agree that leaving your AC on during the night is pretty safe. What`s more, some actually recommend it since the optimal temperature for sleeping seems to be on the cooler end of the spectrum.

My 1988 honda fourtrax 300 keeps shutting off after about 30 minutes of riding. It bogs down then it shuts off it doesn’t just shut right off. I will then have to wait about 5 minutes to start it up again. It seems like when it gets hot it does that. What could it be?
