Symptoms of a faulty cold start valve:
Engine stalling – After your engine starts, you may experience stalling while you drive. This will either occur at higher RPMs or when you take your foot off the pedal. Rough idle – Your engine may produce loud noises or even vibrations when you are idling.
When doing a cold start, the choke should be closed to limit the amount of air going in. This increases the amount of fuel in the cylinder and helps to keep the engine running, while it is trying to warm up.
Leaving the choke on while operating will result in excessive fuel consumption, irregular engine power performance and eventually may even damage the engine.
Vehicles tend to be louder during a cold start because the engine will be running rich to help get to operating temp. This is usually controlled electronically via the ECM for EFI engines and via an electric choke for carbureted engines.
Warming up a vehicle before starting a trip lowers fuel economy—idling gets 0 miles per gallon. Colder air is denser, increasing aerodynamic drag on a vehicle, especially at highway speeds.
