How to Identify and Resolve Common Issues ?

To build your own DIY patio, you`ll need a gravel or limestone paver base, sand, and your choice of patio material. Bricks, pavers, or flagstones all create sturdy and attractive stone patio designs.
Whilst constructing a sub-base and laying paving slabs can take some time, the techniques used are relatively simple and it`s possible to complete a small project in a weekend. We recommend asking a friend or family member to help, making the heavier work easier and speeding up the process.
Patio is a Spanish word, and it means that it`s in the courtyard of your building. They`re found adjacent to your home and on the ground floor. They may be constructed with concrete or gravel. They`re generally not built from wood or at all raised. A patio does not have to have walls around it.
Patios are a great option for updating your backyard landscaping because they require little-to-no maintenance. You don`t have to worry about replacing or replanting every year. Once it`s built, it`s there to stay! The most you`ll have to do is clear off dirt and debris from time-to-time.
Foundations are a key element in ensuring the solidity of your patio, balcony or terrace. In order to be durable, foundations must be impervious to ground movements linked to freeze and thaw cycles. To achieve this, foundations must reach down under the frost line, which varies according to the region and type of soil.
Paver thickness is generally about 3- to 3 1/2-inches. Therefore, you need to dig a paver patio base depth of about 9 inches (22.86 cm) to accommodate any kind of paver. 5 inches (12.7 cm) of the hole will be filled with the base material for the base such sand or gravel.
Gravel is the cheapest option when looking to create a patio on a budget. Otherwise, pebbles or reclaimed materials are also good options. If you`re set on laying paving slabs, concrete is one of the cheapest materials, and when installed and maintained correctly, it can hold up well and last for years.
There are several different materials you can use for in-ground patios and pathways, but the three most common are slabs, pavers, and flagstone. Here`s our pros and cons list for each material so you can make the best choice for your backyard.
Concrete is one of the most popular patio materials and the cheapest material you can use to build a hard-surface patio. Concrete is made of aggregates and paste—concrete aggregates can be crushed stone, sand, gravel, or even shells; the paste is made up of water and cement.
It isn`t necessary to use cement when laying a patio, but it is recommended. Learning how to lay a patio without cement can be easier than using cement due to not needing to mix and create the concrete. The best alternative to cement is to use a sub-base of sand.
Yes, they are an absolute must-have

For your patios, concrete is a fantastic building material. This tried-and-tested sand and cement mixture creates elegant patios. Unlike wood decks, ordinary pavers and stone-made walkways, the patios made of concrete tend to look beautiful.

The ideal concrete for a new patio that won`t chip, crack, or spall anytime soon under all of the pressures of entertaining (literal and figurative) needs high-compressive strength like Quikrete 5000 Concrete Mix.
Concrete paver are made from a very dry mix of gravel, sand, cement, and a coloring agent. The ingredients are moved with conveyor belts and placed into molds. A vibrating press compresses the concrete into the mold, causing the small amount of water within the mixture to set the cement.
So hang on – why should you lay your patio on sand instead of using mortar? Well, if you`re not securing your patio with mortar, then you`ll need to lay it on a bed of sand and gravel instead. A sand base is cost-effective and doesn`t require a huge amount of skill or experience to lay.
Seating Walls Enhance Fire Features

By adding small walls around your patio, you can make your space safer as they keep people and furnishings from falling off. This can be exceptionally important if your space offers more than one level. Low level walls can serve as the framework for planters and flower beds.

A patio should slope away from the house at the rate of 1/8″ (3mm) per running foot.
Even if you have concrete patio ideas for small yards, every single detail must be meticulously planned out, else you end up with a patio that won`t even last you a month before you have to start working on repairs. It is essential that you keep your concrete slab at no more than six (6) inches of thickness.
Natural stone, tile, pavers, and brick are some of the longest-lasting patio materials. These materials are durable and resistant to weather and wear, which makes them a good choice for long-lasting structures.
Regular clay bricks make for a very graceful material for driveways, patios and walkways; however, you get special bricks to form pavers. Pavers made of concrete tend to be harder and long-lasting in comparison to bricks. However, you can use bricks as pavers if they are laid down properly and maintained regularly.
A brick paver patio costs from $8 to $50 per square foot. The cost to install a concrete patio, in comparison, can range from $8 to $12 per square foot. Paver repairs, however, tend to cost less than concrete repairs since you can swap out individual pavers if they become damaged.
We recommend a minimum of 25 square feet per person. So, if you plan to host 15 people- plan for a space around 375 sq. ft. We recommend a patio around 550 square feet for comfortable entertaining.
Go for hardwood as they`re durable, minimal maintenance and last for years. They also look better than softwood ridged decking, which needs more work as debris accumulates in the grooves.
Granite Paving Slabs

It is the only igneous stone that we have available and it is by far and away the most durable. The surface of granite paving slabs can come in a huge range of colours and finishes from white to black. Because granite is tough, it cuts incredibly cleanly.

Have a Sunjoy patio htr model # G-PH017PSS. Can get the pilot light to come on, but when I release the button to turn to low the gas stops and unit will not light. Friend said may be a bad coupler unit??
ANSWER : The flame sensor is not sesning flame.
The flame sensor on your unit very well could be a thermocouple.

Sometimes the sensor can be cleaned, but they usually have to be replaced.

Also clean the pilot light assembly and the shroud that deflects the flame pattern into the sensor. When these become rusted, clogged etc, they can tend to prevent the flame from consistently contacting the sensor.

If your unit DOES have a thermocouple, you can pick them up at most hardware stores, Lowes HD etc for less than 10 bucks.
One to two screws and a flare fitting are all that holds them on.

I have a Bernzomatic patio heater. It will run for hours then turn off. I thought the tank was empty but when I went to refill it the guy said it was only down a gallon? Took it home, lit it up and a few hours later it went off again? I’ve had the same prooblem with three different tanks. any ideas?
ANSWER : Tank regulator is probably freezing up if your tank is in the cold, which I’m assuming it is, otherwise why would you have heater on. How cold is it, where you and tank are? Pouring warm water over the regulator area, will usually thaw that when it happens, if it is convenient to do so, without making a mess. Tank filled too full can be a contributing factor as well. That heater probably takes a lot of volume to run, and as propane escapes tank, it causes tank to get colder, thus valve freezes up. One way to eliminate that, would be to see if filler can remove any moisture in tank, by injection methyl hydrate, or similar to remove any moisture in tank, which by the way, should have been done first fill and purge of the tank. Make sure they know what they are doing that’s all. Other option, to cut down on volume coming out of one tank would be to add another tank, with “T” in line to both tanks, and have it draw from both tanks at same time, thus it should overcome excessive flow and freezing of one tank. Check at local propane distributor, as well, they may have an easier solution, but if not, they will have what you need to add second tank.
